UGH. My HAIR.

Help. I've got very fine, very flyaway hair that just looks shit 99% of the time. So fine that if I plait it it looks like a rat's tail. So flyaway that whatever I do to it I tend to end the day looking like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards. Really gets me down! I'd love to sport long, luscious waves, but probably never gonna happen. Failing that at least sleek and neat would be nice! Is anyone in the same boat, or anyone well informed about products that can genuinely thicken and/or improve quality of hair. Hair can really make or break a look and I feel like it's always break, never make!

Why don't you go and have a chat with a well established hairdresser and ask them - maybe they would suggest products or some braided extensions? I have the hair of about 5 people which presents its own challenges so can't advise other than speak to a professional xx

I have the same and have had excellent results with getting completely rid of sulphates, silicones and drying alcohols.

Shea moisture makes a range called Fruit Fusion thats for fine hair and I have found I really don't miss 'proper' shampoo containing sulphates.

I also really like Garnier hair food mask, and I'm really interested in trying some of the Noughty products.

Silicones 'choke' the hair and need removing with harsh sulphates which is why they need to be avoided!

Try tape hair extensions. I've worn them for years and get lots of compliments about my thick hair. The truth is my hair is just like yours, thin, flyaway and just crap. I haven't got any issues with hair loss and it's in good condition, it's just fine.

Scorpiomoon - good advice, I did talk to my hairdresser last time but just felt she had no idea really :( so hard to know in advance who really knows what they're talking about! The hair of five people Shock would like to swap!

Shaking- really good tips, thanks. Is Shea Moisture a company?

Flosslets - I saw a lady's extensions the other day when her hair fell forward and vowed never to get them! Are tape ones more invisible? Any recommendations for specific brands or is it more about how they're put in?

I’ve recently got round to figuring out my hair “type”. There is a table from 1a through to (I think) 4c. I stopped reading at 1b as that’s me. You may well be 1a from what you’ve described. Once you have a label there is lots of info on what products to use and avoid.
Also, as someone with very similar hair to you, I get on much better with a shorter hair cut. This might not be what you want to hear though.

Same here, OP. A lifetime of fine, flyaway hair. You just have to learn to live with it in the most practical way for your lifestyle.
Have it short. It doesn't pull away from the head and it's easy to bulk out. Use any mousse or spray in volumiser - they all seem to work. Don't use a conditioner. They're adding a heavy layer that you don't need.

For flyaway hair it absolutely needs conditioner! Just a silicone free one

Well clearbluebastards not for everyone. I haven't used a conditioner for many years and my hair looks better. I think fine hair gets weighed down a bit. Anyway, it's only my advice from personal experience and I just want to help the OP.

I have fine hair but masses of it. I have to be very careful about conditioners though as they can weigh my hair down and it looks sad. It's worth experimenting with different building body shampoos and conditioners. Some work with my hair and others simply don't. You might want to try a roots lifting spray before blow drying. Also, what is your diet like? My hair thinned a lot when I was low in iron and it took a while to recover.

Oooh interested to know if anyone in this position has had success with extensions. My hair is fine and so very flat. I've thought about extensions in temple area to give it some oomph but am worried it will create hair loss due to tension of having them fitted. Anyone had good results?
