Our foster daughter is 11. She is tall for her age and tends to wear age 13-14. She has long slender legs but carries weight around her tummy.

We have a wedding to go to in December and I'm not sure what style of dress would suit her best. I'm short and pear shaped and a bit clueless with fashion really! She's becoming very body conscious so i would like to be able to pick a few things out that would be flattering and then let her have the final decision on what she likes best.

What kind of clothes does she like?

Is she more into pinks and sparkly girly dresses? Will she only wear comfortable things? Florals? Is she young for her age or mature? Trousers?

Also What are you wearing - you don't want to look wildly different.

The rest of us are in navy so if it has a little navy or blue in it that would be great.

She lives in comfy t-shirts and leggings. She doesnt like other trousers but she'll happily wear pinafores. She likes pastel colours and they really suit her colouring too.

I've just had a look on next and they have a massive selection of dresses. Also Matalan have a nice polka dot jumpsuit as an alternative.

If you wait a few weeks the Christmas ranges will give you
More scope.

Hope you find something you like!

What about a nice jumpsuit?

A skater dress would work quite well for her shape.

Lipsy girls have a lace navy skater dress.

I think she would prefer a dress as I'm in a dress and so is my DD, but I will suggest a jumpsuit to her.
I'm just worried a lot of the dresses are quite tight across the bodice and I don't think they would flatter her.

How about something like this but may not be dressy enough.

Maybe find a few different styles and try them on including some of the ones you think are too fitted in the bodice. I wear fitted clothes and Have a 'well proportioned' waist Grinthey may well suit her and/or she might feel lovely and all princessy and that would be nice too.

Another option is a skirt and top -elasticated skirt and a tucked in posh T-shirt with a belt. Maybe Let her have a look at few adult styles and see what she likes.

Although Children's body shapes aren't the same as women's.

I got married last week and my daughter, also 11, wore a dress from Roco. She wouldn’t have liked a very flowery/young one or a teenager/too grown-up dress and was very happy with the Victoria dress (it comes in a beautiful navy). Well made and feels nice to wear.

My 11 year old DD has the same shape. Don’t bother trying a skirt and top.....at this age they have no waist and it ends up accentuating the midriff. My DD can get away with some jumpsuits, providing the middle is elasticated and the material in the torso quite generous.

Skater dresses also look nice, but again need to have elasticated waistline. H&M do some good stuff for pre-teens.

I think the recurring theme is elastication!
