What is layering?

Sorry for the stupid question, obviously I understand what the word means and how it could be applied to an outfit! But how do people go about doing this? What kind of items does it involve? In my head it just means adding a jacket to a top; is there more to it? Ordered a new top and it looks a bit boring on its own so want to jazz it up but no clue where to start!

Vest top, top, jumper/cardigan, jacket, coat, scarf etc. Then you can strip off or add a layer depending on weather, air conditioning, hot flushes etc!

At this time of year for me it would mean a t-shirt, with a cardi over, or a crew neck jumper with a vest underneath, then leather or denim jacket. Once it gets colder I would add a blanket type scarf.

Alternatively for me, bringing a summery dress into colder weather. I have some midi length ones from Monki which I wear with a heat tech top underneath, and opaque tights, plus the aforementioned jackets.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses where do you get your blanket type scarfs from? That sounds like something I could do with Smile

I think there's two kinds

1 wearing a thermal or long sleeve t-shirt under a dress or a shirt and then a cardigan or jumper and a jacket. This kind is mostly about controlling temperature.

2 wearing shorter items under longer ones so the one underneath peeks out, to show a contrasting colour or a softer look. A fashion thing.

@Passthecake30 mine are all from Zara - the men’s bit though!
