Plantar fasciitis and winter footwear 🦶🦶

GoldenGumballs · 02/09/2020 20:38

Am quite new to the painful condition of plantar fasciitis ( lockdown fitness spate) and have managed through the Summer in Birkenstock’s & ASICS gel trainers. Am back to the office soon and not sure what shoes to wear. It’s smart casual dress so could get away with trainers but they’re not very waterproof. Any advice anyone?

Skechers memory foam all the way! You can get away with the all black type for work. Apparently lots of hospital staff wear them. They were a life saver for me ( teacher) had to wear them for six months until it healed. Sympathies - it's a pretty miserable condition x

I have found that the best shows for me are ones where my foot is supported and I don’t have to try and keep the shoes on, iyswim?
So - no loafers. Brogues with a softer sole are good for me. And no dead flat.

Fitflop brand work for some people - they have a good range of shoes for all seasons now.

You have my sympathy. It’s bloody horrible!

Wedge or low but stable heel will take the stress of asks should be more comfortable. Put 3/4 insoles in to support your foot. Scholl 3/4 length ones are fab!

I managed in Clark's "formal" shoes as they have plenty of padding under the heel.

My secret weapons for plantar fasciitis are:

  • Ice and lots of it. 20 mins as many times a day as you can possibly manage.
  • calf stretching, 30 seconds 10+ times per day either the traditional way standing against a wall or with a strap around your toes and pull towards you.
  • most important, before first putting a foot to the floor in the morings, stretch calves well with the strap and 1 min of rolling the foot on a rolling pin.

It's time consuming but made a massive difference to me once I started doing all the exercises on a very regular basis, rather than now and again.

I found DMs with insoles in ok and waterproof.

I think Birkenstock’s do shoes and boots too if you find they suit you.

FinnyStory Thankyou for the tips. It’s just been so frustrating as I planned to lose lots of weight and get fit. I know if I go for a long walk I’ll be hobbling the day after but I really need to lose weight so I get really upset with it all Sad

I did not find fitflop shoes any good for me.

I think a sports physio appt is a better investment TBH

It is a horrible thing and takes a really long time to heal, but things definitely improved for me once I gave it a real concerted effort. I had it in both feet at the same time, indescribable!

If you get these you can wear any shoes. Just replace them regularly.

i had some fit flop lace ups that i wore until my PF sorted itself out. i would have anything with that extra arch type support would help you?

@GoldenGumballs - No, I don’t need to wear an insole with them.

Only thing that fixed my PF was electro shockwave therapy.
But, this is only really a good option after trying all the other things. Partly cos it’s pretty expensive!
I’m now careful with what footwear I choose, never go barefoot and make sure I stretch properly every day.

Thanks for link fishfrog I may try the insoles in my DM shoes. Yes will go see foot doc if no improvement after proper rest & stretches. I know I need to rest but it’s hard not to walk as it’s been so good for my head but so bad for my feet Grin

I was crippled with this for months and then I read somewhere about rolling your foot on a plastic water bottle. I didn't have one but had a wooden rolling pin! I sat every evening for a few weeks rolling my foot on the rolling pin whilst watching the TV. It starts off being very painful but after a few minutes it really helps. Now I very rarely get any pain but as soon as I get a twinge out comes my rolling pin (I don't use it in the kitchen anymore!).

Vionics are good and have a few ‘acceptable’ styles. They last a long time too, I have their loafers and grey suede boots.

I second the recommended insoles. I have them in all my shoes. And wear fit flops in the house. The proper wobble board ones not the half-arsed slippers which don’t have the original wobble board!

Birkenstock don't just do sandals, they do shoes too! I have some that have the same moulded footbed as their sandals.
