Hair Care for thinning hair

I might just be paranoid because i've yet to visit my hairdresser for my first cut since lockdown so my hair generally looks terrible, but i feel like my hair may be thinning on top and receding a little at the front. Starting to panic a little! I'm 44, so could be related to peri menopause.

Are there any shampoos, conditioners or treatments i could use to help? I use Treseme at the moment, which i know is probably not good. I have a cut booked in for a few weeks time. I don't style my hair and usually let it dry naturally, so it can't be anything to do with overstyling etc. I also have a slightly itchy scalp. Help!

My hair started thinning during peri (I also had low iron and thyroid issues which didn’t help) I used bumble and bumble thickening spray for a while, I used to wash it at night, spray it in and leave to dry naturally. It was a lot thicker when I got up for work and no stickiness. However, I have recently changed to this SLS free for dandruff/itchy scalp -I used to have to use T gel and Nizorel! (cheaper in boots & on amazon btw)
noughtyhaircare.co.uk/products/care-taker-shampoo
And some faith in nature SLS free conditioner (again, cheaper in boots/amazon)

And my hair is thicker than it’s been in years. It feels lovely and no dandruff or itching.

I do think it’s worth asking the Dr for a blood test though to rule out thyroid/B12/iron & Vit D deficiencies.

Agree with getting a blood test to rule out deficiencies. My iron stores were at rock bottom several years ago and have been taking iron ever since. Think my hair is thinning for other reasons now, though!

You mention that's it probably not good that you're using Treseme at the moment, why is that? Is it a thickening shampoo/treatment?

My hair is also thinning at the moment, right at the front, and I’m very conscious of it

I’m 43 and starting to wonder if peri menopause

Thank you. I've just ordered the shampoo and conditioner you've recommended, along with some T-Gel to see if i can blitz the itch with that first. I've also managed to get a cut booked in for tomorrow (will worry about the colour another time!). Hoping that if i relieve the itch and get my scraggly ends cut off i'll feel a bit better about it all.

I'll take a look at the thickening spray mentioned too.

I only mention Treseme because it's a cheap product and i know they often get blasted for being full of cheap chemicals etc, like Pantene etc.

I need to book in for blood tests for something else soon, so will see if i can add iron etc to the list.

Thanks for the ideas so far!

Taking Biotin is supposed to help, but I've only been taking it for a month so too soon to tell!

Is your hair quite long at the moment? Sometimes long hair can make sparser patches more visible as the weight drags it down and 'exposes' them. I'm thinking mainly the crown for this. I know it's easier to disguise thinness on top when some of the length has been chopped off.

Blankblankblank mentioned Nizoral, I also used this. It's for dandruff and certain scalp conditions but is also sometimes mentioned in conjunction with hair loss - my doctor prescribed it to me on this basis.

In terms of covering up the thinning areas (don't know if you're at this point yet!) I can highly recommend Toppik hair fibres (other brands are available...)

Let us know how you feel about your hair after the cut Smile

Thank you!

Biotin is now also on my shopping list.

Yes my hair is v long at the moment, so i'm really hoping the cut tomorrow helps me feel better. I was thinking the weight might be dragging it down, not that my hair is thick unfortunately. But i last had it cut in December so it's in a terrible state! I'm hoping the highlights i usually get will make a difference too, but will have to wait until September for that. I think dark roots probably make the contrast against my pale scalp look worse!

dinosaurrisotto shampoos etc won't help the cause or stop hair loss if... They might make the hair have more volume but that's it.

Get the blood test and demand that iron, zinc and thyroid are examined. It also happened to me and my problem was an iron and zinc combination fix that AND it stops the hair loss from happening. Also, have a thyroid issue

Thanks again everyone. The blog post is very helpful and i will make sure to get a blood test when i'm able to.

Just wanted to update you, post haircut. I definitely feel a lot better. I had a good 4 or 5 inches hacked off, so there is a lot less weight to it and the neat, blunt ends make it feel thicker when i run my fingers through it. It has made me feel less concerned about the crown. I kept looking at my hairline in the mirror and getting paranoid that i could see signs of it receding at the sides near the temples. But then i looked at the 20 something hairdresser and she had a similar hairline, so maybe it is paranoia?? I've decided to take some photos of my hair/head and that way i can better monitor what's going on over time.
