Hi all

Hit 47 in February and I don't know what's happened but I suddenly look really old. It may be a result of lockdown but I feel like I have aged 10 years in 6 months. Hair is awful naturally mousy now lots of grey ( getting it cut next week) got very long in lockdown . Skin red ( rosacea) and pre-menopause spots , chin saggy . Body about a stone overweight doing couch to 5 k. Also just feel old all of a sudden too.

I'm a single mum so not a lot of spare cash. Would really welcome your cheap ideas make up , skincare , health tips that made you feel young and alive again!!!!

Thank you xxxx

Is it menopause?.

You need to improve things from internally mainly.
Cut down on dairy and sugar and take a good multivitamin.
Cut down on booze and caffeine and drink lots of water.
Eat lots of vegetables.
Getting hair and eyebrows sorted will help a lot.

I’ve felt the same.

Things that help me are

  • Vitamin C face cream. Can get these cheaply from the Ordinary or The Inkey List
  • Glycolic acid face cream - ditto.
  • L’Oréal Elvive Extraordinary Oil conditioner: really helps with the awful hair texture that comes with so much grey.
  • Tinted moisturiser - mine is Nars which is a bit spendy but lots of good ones out there.

And I’ve gone on a diet and lost 10lb - another 10lb to go! - and I feel I look much better as a result of that.

Thank you both

@Fluffycloudland77 I think I could be peri menopausal? I'm on the pill due to migraines , so don't have periods so I'm not sure I could tell.

@Beechview I agree. I am looking at my diet . It has been hard during lockdown and I know I have been reaching for the biscuits and comfort food a lot more .

With the hair you can always dye it or cut it shorter and embrace the grey, as it can look very chic.

For the rosacea, please book in with your GP and request Soolantra cream and Azelaic Acid (Skinoren or Finacea). These should do the trick in days.

YouTube has some exercise videos including chin exercises and you can try intermittent fasting which should help with the weight.

Let us know how you get on in a month or so as you should see some results by then.

Menopause is 48-51 on average and we lose 30% of our collagen at menopause 😭.

A retinol off the ordinary helps preserve collagen, start with a weak 0.2% then work up and don’t forget to do neck and chest.

I just turned 50 and things that have totally saved me looking old...

The Ordinary... any products really but especially

Buffet
Vit C cream

You wake up looking refreshed and youthful. People commented on how good I was looking! I promise. Cheap and effective.

Less sugar and carbs. As much seep as possible and loads of water.

Oil of evening primrose really made my skin plump and glowing, also the berocca energise tablets.
Aldi's knock off Q10 moisturizer with a little face tan mixed in .
You'll feel much better when your hair is done !

@MellowMelly Which facial massage are you doing?

I feel the same, things that make me feel slightly better. A light tan, I like dove, everything looks better, and also a light tan on your face. Nails done if you can afford it by a shellac kit and do them yourself. Make up everyday, only bb cream, and a bit of eye make up and bronzer. I'm also doing couch to 5k, and the 5-2 diet
Early days but hoping to see results soon. I'm 55 by the way.

Oh and good skincare, I use Elemis but there is loads of affordable skincare around. I like a balm cleanser and use a cotton face cloth as it acts as an exfoliator, makes a huge difference to my skin.

Drink loads of water...I always thought this was a cliche but I've started doing it and my skin is much better and it makes me less hungry.

Get your hair sorted. That's a massive factor for me and I feel so much better when it is cut/coloured.

Superdrug have a brilliant Vitamin E skincare range which is very kind on the pocket.

Lots of online exercise videos now. Look at the NHS pilates ones.

@AnneShirleysNewDress it’s facial yoga. My skin has definitely responded well to it and I’ve combined it with a Simple water based moisturiser which I pat on rather than rub in. I’ve seen a reduction in my rosacea, fine lines and peri menopausal acne.

Drink 2 litres of water every day. I recently went to my MIL for a weekend and drank about 2 glasses of water a day instead of my usual 2 litres and when I came back my skin looked dull and I was getting spots. Eating lots of veggies will help massively too

The Ordinary has a good Vitamin C serum, but other than that I think things like making sure your hair looks nice every day (blow dry, style etc.) and just dressing nice makes a world of a difference

I have rosasea as well, with lots of red veins near the surface.
I use www.boots.com/clinique-redness-solutions-makeup-spf15-30ml-10114965
I went into boots and asked the sales girl about how to cover it and she gave me a makeover, it was the first foundation that didn't make my face 'mauve' I was nearly in tears when she finished. It was well worth having her do it as I found out how to apply it the correct way - with a brush - and how much to use. It is not cheap but a tube lasts a long time and gives me so much confidence when I go out.

home workouts have been a revelation to me since Joe wicks ended! free, convenient, fun. aside from that colouring own hair, waxing own legs, using fake tan, daily breakfast smoothie (homemade), 2l water, 3+ portions veg a day, sleep, salicylic acid soap bar for clearer skin, the ordinary products, occasional salon treatments when i can afford them....my cheapskate suggestions, same age as you op and I get where you're coming from! ooh and sign up for myfitnesspal

Weight training to hold on to your muscle tone and pilates/yoga for balance, posture etc. I think the way you stand or walk can really age you.

Yes to drinking lots of water every day, also daily stretches. There is a great app you can download for this. A good haircut can work wonders. Skincare products i swear by is the Cerave smoothing cleanser, Aldi Lacura Retinol tonic, a good hyaluronic serum, Superdrug Vitamin E oil at night, and my go to Nivea Soft cream which I use all over. I'm 44 and overweight, but i have been told I don't look my age.

Becareful with harsh skincare if you have rosacea. Get an led light face mask. You can get them pretty cheap these days and cost per use it’s a bargain. It has worked wonders for me. Cleared up my eczema on my eyes, stopped me getting regularly chapped lips and just gives me an overall glow. I think it’s supposed to be good for rosacea. Bit of baby Botox on the forehead if you have the nerve. Those two things combined have taken about 5 years off me in the last year.

MellowMelly I'd love to do facial massages to get rid of my jowls and liven up my droopy face! Please can you tell me which ones you do? Thank you.
