Please can you recommend a good shampoo that doesn't cost £££££?!

Have been using Pantene shampoo and conditioner (for coloured hair) for years. But my hair seems to be getting drier, and my hairdresser commented that it wasn't in as good condition as she would have expected, having had 5 months of lockdown!

She doesn't like Pantene, because it uses silicone, which builds up on the hair. But up until now I haven't really noticed any problems.

At the salon, they sell (and she recommended) Kerastase Discipline for my hair - it is prone to frizz. I happily bought some, before realising just how expensive it is! God knows how much I paid at the salon, because my receipt (cut, blow dry, full head highlights + products) wasn't itemised. All I can say is that it was a fuck of a lot of money.

On Amazon, the shampoo and conditioner, as a bundle, is £34 , which I simply do not want to have to pay again.

Are there any hairdressers out there, or other experts, who can point me in the direction of something that will work with my hair better than the Pantene, but won't cost me so much?

Kerastase discipline is so expensive!! That's quite a good deal on amazon cause in my local hairdressers it's about 25/30 quid per bottle, I know its lovely but seems ridiculous for something you wash off. I'm having good results with faith in nature, it's about 5 pounds a bottle, I get it from Oxfam shops but think it's also in sainsburys. I use hemp and meadowflowrr one at the moment and it makes my hair soft and shiny, mostly simple ingredients but colour safe too. I also like pureology range, that's quite pricey but always good results. If you can find some Maria Nila shampoo or conditioner, probably online or from a hair trade shop, that range is really lovely, the true soft or colour protect ones are so nice.

If your hair is getting drier avoid the sulphates that you get in cheap makes like Pantene, Head & Shoulders etc. Silicones also make your hair dry by 'coating' it with plastic so that it eventually becomes hard to moisturise.

I had Kerastase once (Elixir Ultime Bain) and I was really disappointed that it contained Sodium Laureth Sulfate, I thought a 'luxury' brand would have better ingredients than that. It was quite drying IME.

Shea Moisture are great - about £10 a bottle in Superdrug. Very kind & moisturising to dry, frizzy hair I've found. Maui are also moisturising.

I also love Aveda Rosemary & Mint Shampoo, it's about £20 but I only use it sometimes to clarify because I moisturise my hair so much. (I haven't tried the conditioner though). Because it's minty it was amazing to use over the hot spell we had recently :)

I've recently switched to shampoo and conditioner bar soaps. It's taken a little getting used to but I'm happier knowing they're better for my hair (no sls) and better for the environment (no plastic packaging).

I have fair, thin hair so have always had to wash it daily, otherwise it looks lank and greasy. Since using these I can now comfortably wash every other day.

I use the KinKind "Give me Strength" ones.

I've been using the Aldi shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair for a while now. My hairdresser commented I must be using a really good shampoo 'cos the colour was lasting really well! Definitely doesn't cost ££££.

DD has been educating me about shampoo and she really rates the hair food wotsit by Garnier. It's very low in sulphates (some of them don't have any at all iirc) The macadamia is lovely and DD uses the mango.
I also love the green and brown packaged macadamia from Allbeauty but it's probably still got a few nasties in it.

Tigi Bedhead. You can get the shampoo and conditioner sets on Amazon for about £14. They are massive bottles and it's good quality stuff, so very reasonable price wise.

I started using the Elasticate one about two months ago as my hair was also very dry and damaged. It has helped a lot.

Pantene is terrible for my hair! I stopped using it as a teenager because it made my hair look awful!

I have curly hair. I tend to use OGX. It's about £7 for a big bottle when it's not on offer. But I usually buy it when it's on offer. It's currently half price in Superdrug. John Frida is always on some kind of offer in Boots and I like it on my hair too. In fact, most of the stylist brands (Mark Hill, Umberto Giannini, Trevor Sorbet etc) are quite good and usually on offer in Boots and Superdrug.

I've recently switched to Tigi Bedhead. I bought it from Amazon, shampoo and conditioner about £14 like a PP. As soon as I started using it I got compliments about my hair from work colleagues! So it really must work.

I love child's farm fig shampoo and conditioner. It was my baby's and I had to use it once and loved it! My teen girl uses it now too.

Thanks all - really interesting range of suggestions! I wonder what hairdressers think of these though? I get that they are 'forced' to recommend the brands that their salons stock, because they have targets/get commission, but I'd love to know what they really think!

Re: Bedhead- I had the blue one (recovery damage level 2) which was great, but yesterday used Resurrection, damage level 3 red bottle) for the first time and my hair feels smooth and silky and not a frizzball this morning.

Hi I've just started using Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner, really impressed so far, my hair feels soft and shiny! Also trying for the first time after a thread on here a shampoo bar from Guruum (Think that's how you spell it..) - loving that too, so tempted to try more shampoo bars next

Shampoo bars are great, but I think your hair needs to be in pretty good condition already to get on with them. They're not going to do much for very dry or damaged hair.
