The biggest tip I have is to work out your tdee
tdeecalculator.net
2000 is too much for many women. Then make sure you weigh and portion everything and log everything you eat in My Fitness Pal.

I’ve finally been able to understand what I’ve been doing wrong and have lost over 2 stone just by logging everything and making informed choices. Yes I can have that glass of wine but those 5 chocolate digestives work out more than a whole pizza Blush

I have to work pretty hard to keep the weight off. Lost over 2 stone 8 years ago and have 'mostly' maintained my weight since then - give or take a few pounds.

Calorie counting helps as I put on weight eating anything over 1200 a day. More than anything else a low carb diet makes the biggest difference for me! I tend to eat carbs earlier in the day and restrict them for my evening meal.

bingowingsmcgee · 02/08/2020 12:36

pimms that sounds so harsh. How long did it take you to get used to the calorie restricted lifestyle?

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2020 13:14

@Blossom4538, I'd try the weight loss topic.

I'd say avoid heavily processed food, high-GI carbs, and eat sensibly.
Aim to eat 12-a-day of fruit and veg, and start each meal with the veg. Don't eat between meals, unless it's a piece of fruit or veg.

GemmeFatale · 02/08/2020 19:59

Lots of veggies - the advice from @MikeUniformMike is pretty much where I sit. Also lots of spice/garlic/flavour. You want your veggies to seem exciting and a treat to eat.

The best way I’ve found is to not eat anything sweet except fruit. That way I dodge the extra calories from cereal, biscuits, snack bars etc
Its really easy after a few days as you lose the taste for it. I do occasionally have pudding but only as a treat. This method has meant I can be more liberal in my savoury choices like crisps bread and cheese which are generally more filling.
I do run a lot however so get rid of calories that way too so maybe I can be more liberal with savoury as a trade off

Quackersandcheese3 · 02/08/2020 20:22

I recently started the 5:2 fasting diet . It’s been about 6 weeks and I’ve lost about 7 lb. I’m Not doing much in way way of exercise etc so the loss had been due to restricting calories.
It’s been so interesting learning about the calorific content of foods.

Grottyfeet · 02/08/2020 20:35

Sugar. If I cut out refined sugar, the weight comes off without even trying

GlassOfPimms · 02/08/2020 22:13

@bingowingsmcgee it was easier to see it as a way of life and not a 'diet'! Probably wouldn't work for everyone but it fits well with my eating patterns. The hardest thing is not drinking too much as it's just empty calories (I may have slipped on this slightly during lockdown Blush)

PintOfGin · 02/08/2020 22:17

Not the healthiest suggestions but the only sweet thing I eat (if I'm desperate for something sweet) is sugar free jelly. The sweetener isn't great for you but it's virtually calorie free.
O or I make ice lollys using sugar free squash (again not good if your avoiding sweetener)

OhTheRoses · 02/08/2020 22:19

Empty plate. Gnaw in the tummy. Tjere’s Not much alternative.

LoeliaPonsonby · 02/08/2020 22:23

A proper fitness watch paired with MyFitnessPal. I use a Garmin with a heart rate sensor and it does a great job at accurately calculating my calories. It syncs with MyFitnessPal so I have an accurate record of daily calorie expenditure and I log my food on MFP.

JayeAshe · 02/08/2020 22:24

Pickles for snacks. Especially Aldi chili pickled gherkins. And Airwaves gum to combat cravings.

bingowingsmcgee · 02/08/2020 23:13

Thanks pimms. It feels weird to have to change from eating for pleasure to eating for health. I feel all put-out about it! 😂

AgeLikeWine · 02/08/2020 23:25

I found that not having sugary foods (except fruit), fizzy drinks, crisps, refined carbs & alcohol in the house was very helpful. I find bread & beer, in particular, almost impossible to resist so if I’m trying to lose weight they are the first things to go.

mineofuselessinformation · 02/08/2020 23:40

I'm walking a lot on a treadmill. Not strolling, properly marching!
Coupled with that, two out of every three days are 'salad days'.
Diet wise, I'm avoiding carbs where possible.
Salads mean a huge salad with lots of ingredients which I like, including crunchy things, and chopped gerkins and kimchi for extra flavour.
I make two at a time, because I'm really only eating one main meal a day - in the evening, I might pick at something more snacky, and also eat a fair few monkey nuts and pieces of fruit.
It hasn't been quick, but I've gradually lost weight.

Terralee · 03/08/2020 15:19

I count calories. As I gained weight a few years ago due to meds an NHS Dietician worked out that I should eat 1500 calories each day to lose weight, with minimal exercise only.

A month ago I was 3 stone overweight & decided to cut down to 1500 calories again plus trying to fit in moderate exercise.
I would say that I've managed 1500 calories 5 days a week & about 1900 calories the other 2 days as I've been on 'early morning' shifts at work.

So in a month I've lost nearly half a stone & not felt hungry once!
I've allowed myself a small treat each day such as an ice cream.
But apart from the treat I eat low sugar & low saturated fat foods anyway.

I'm now thinking of upping the exercise & going down to 1400 calories eg 4 days a week to speed up the weight loss.
But my clothes already feel looser!

CharlottesComplicatedWeb · 03/08/2020 20:08

Following Slimming World and Couch 25k. Have lost a stone plus in lockdown.

IndiaPlace · 03/08/2020 20:32

We (partner and I) have stopped eating early in the day and at lunchtime we eat fruit/cereal/yoghurt or overnight oats with berry's and nuts.

For tea we usually have fish or chicken with a salad and couscous, maybe a homemade curry, omelette, or home made chilli. No potatoes or bread.
Snack in the evening include popcorn or nuts, sometimes a chocolate 'mini bite' type sweet or liquorice.

My partner uses an exercise app for about 15 mins each day, I sometimes do some yoga.

Since the end of April I've lost 9lbs and now weigh 8st. My partner has gone from 14st 9lbs to 12st 12lbs. We are pretty pleased.

Rumtopf · 03/08/2020 20:48

I cut out refined sugar, eat low GI, very little processed and no gluten (am gluten intolerant and it makes me bloat as well as ill). I also normally eat between 1pm and 6pm and get 12k steps a day plus either yoga or 10km on the bike. I track everything on MFP and aim for 1400-1500 cals a day.

user1493413286 · 03/08/2020 20:55

Cooking everything from scratch and eating lean meats like chicken or turkey and fish with brown rice or Wholemeal pasta

MilkRunningOutAgain · 03/08/2020 20:59

I don’t count calories. If wanting to loose weight slowly before lockdown I don’t eat breakfast, eat a one course normal meal in the staff canteen, don’t snack at all, eat a big bowl of muesli on arriving home at 6pm (I’m always starving when I get home & this satisfies me) & then a small dinner at 8 pm. Avoid any snacks or puddings, & choose healthier veg heavy options in the canteen and at home. Drinks are water, tea or coffee only. And Diet Coke if I’m out.
