John Frieda Defy Grey

Hi all :-)

Does anyone have any experience of the above please?

I have dark, uncoloured hair which has almost a natural ombré look to it which I love but I’m 38 and starting to get some greys which are becoming more noticeable if I have my hair tied up.

I’m loathe to start colouring it fully and have come across the John Frieda Defy Grey, which you can get in a shampoo, conditioner and hair foam (currently on a 3 for 2 in Boots - bonus!).

Any other recommendations would be fab if you’ve found something that works well also :-)

i got it

i noticed no difference to my hair. i did find it a complete faff to remember to leave shampoo in for 2-3 mins and then also conditioner the same (especially as i had to reach for shower head to wash the shampoo/dye off arm).

Towels also appear rather streaky

@burnoutbabe ahhh, what a shame! Was exactly what I was after but perhaps too good to be true!

I tried it last week - and it worked for me. To be honest I'm not quite sure what result I was really expecting (none probably!) but they greys have actually blended in. I've never coloured my hair, it used to be quite a deep brown colour but has faded with age to a lighter dull and dirty looking brown with a scattering of grey hairs mainly at the front. During lockdown it seems to have got a lot greyer, especially at the sides and looked awful. I used the shampoo and conditioner but not the foam (foam didn't get such good reviews). The conditioner seems to have the strongest colour element to it and needed more hand washing to get rid of it. But it worked perfectly and the results have got better with each wash (three in total now). I don't know how well it would work if your hair is really dark but I'd say it's worth a go. Someone recommended the 'Deeper Brunette' conditioner from the same range and said they thought that had covered up some grey as well so I got that as the third bit of the 3 for 2 deal.

I used it all through lockdown in an attempt to keep grey roots at bay until I could get to the hairdresser. It did a good job- didn’t cover everything completely, but definitely blended the parts where I have greys at my temples and crown. Like a previous poster I used it alongside the brunette products. I found it was accumulative and results were better over time.

Following. Wondering if you need to use all the products or if the conditioner alone would suffice. Does the foam need heat to work or could I let my hair air dry?

I currently use Aveda colour deposit conditioner (a mix of brown and black shades to get a cool-toned brown) and it definitely blends in my grey hairs So they’re not really noticeable, though it doesn’t cover them totally. Not cheap though so it would be good if the JF stuff worked!

Oooh, thanks for the tip about the Aveda one, good to have an alternative if this one stops working/runs out etc. I read some reviews of people using just the conditioner and saying it worked on its own. I'm sticking to using the shampoo as well at the moment as I want to see how much the colour will build using both products. Also my hair seems to really like it, I usually use ones to add a bit of volume but this stuff is working just as well and they smell nice! The foam needs heat to activate apparently. It can also stain the scalp.

Small update - I've now used the shampoo and conditioner five times and the only bit of my hair that shows any sign of grey now is two small streaks at the front, and those are more blonde than grey. Very happy with this.
