Frustrated with inconsistent and odd sizing

Recently I have ordered more clothes online than usual for obvious reasons... it’s been mainly for teen DD who needed/wanted a few thing and also a few things for me. It’s been really frustrating of most things have had to be returned as the sizing is so inconsistent - even within the same brand. Here are some examples - and these are all brands we have bought from before so I thought we had a pretty good idea of sizing:

  • sweatshirt and hoodie from Weekday (owned by H&M) in XS - totally huge!
  • some things from Monki - the jeans were true to size I think, but all the other things were weirdly big
  • running leggings from Lululemon - got the same size dd has had before plus one size up - usual size was tiny - next size up was ok in the hips and bottom (dd is incredibly slim and most leggings are too baggy) but the waist was incredibly tight

It can’t just be us? Our postman and courier delivery guys must think I am a shopaholic but the truth is that 90% of the stuff I have recently ordered has gone back...

Not just you. I’ve given up.
I had several items in my basket tonight but then just realised there is no point in paying, and eagerly awaiting their delivery, because they won’t fit right.
Even before shopping online I would sometimes have to take 3 sizes into the changing room. It’s ridiculous.
I really need new clothes too due to weight loss, I look a right state.

It totally, totally pisses me off.
I don't have time for shopping often so buy most clothing online.
It's not too bad for me as I get mostly everything from one place.
But kids stuff- agh! Even going by the size charts often doesn't help because there is no consistency.
Dd needed leggings. The ones she has are creeping up her calf and almost indecent.
Next size up..about a foot longer than her leg.
Don't even start on bloody shoes!!!

Yes - the size charts are pretty useless

My dd is a size 6 and 5 foot 8 which is common on the sort of clothing sites that she likes but I reckon 80% has to be sent back for not fitting. Considering that the photo often gives the model's height and clothes size, you'd think it was going to be easy for someone like her to find fitting clothes but it's not at all.

This isn’t helpful, and I agree places should be more consistent, but I think you get to know how places size/fit, and what suits your shape.

I’m 5ft 6, and generally a size 10. In places I shop, I know:

Cos - 10/small
Topshop - might be a 12
Zara - M or L
Whistles - 10
Monki - S or even XS - they tend to be oversized
Levi’s for jeans - 28 waist
Other Stories - tops 10 or S, dresses a 12
M&S - 8
Arket - 10/S
H&M - wouldn’t even try online
ASOS - I do find the fit finder thing accurate, based on customers who kept or returned, and were a similar size to me

Judystealdreams - that’s actually quite helpful and consistent with my experiences. It’s interesting how in the same brand, like Other Stories, different categories of clothing come up big or small. I had actually ordered a dress from Other Stories for DD and the size 36 (U.K. 8) was too small across the shoulders and boobs even though teen DD is really slim and has hardly anything on top... Didn’t try the next size up as it would probably be too floppy around the bottom half.

notcontent I am quite hippy with a small waist, so sometimes with dresses I need them bigger to accommodate that. It does depend on the style though.

I also thought I had Zara cracked as in comes up TINY, but just before lockdown I ordered a blouse which the fit prediction thing said I should be medium in. It is giant. My DP tried it on and it fits him comfortably. He is 6ft 5, and has quite a big tummy. I finally got round to listing it on eBay yesterday since I wasn’t able to return it.
