Personal Stylists

I want a style makeover. I have never found my style,I just tend to wear jeans and T shirts. TBH I am fed up of looking frumpy. For the past 4-5 years clothes shopping has been hard for me as it is rare that I see anything I like. I'm not bothered about following the latest fashion, I just want to look good in clothes. I was thinking of using the services of a personal stylist but don,t know if they are worth it. Has anyone used one? Were they any good? Answers on a postcard please.

I tried an online personal stylist, one who is featured in the Daily Fáil often. I had high hopes but they were crushed. I got a lot of copy and paste PDFs with bullet points and screen shots from retailer websites, with a scripted ‘personal analysis’.

I think part of it is being honest about your shape, finding a few style icons - ideally in your age range, skin tone and body shape - and working out what colours suit you. A face to face session in a department store would be great, but not practical at the moment I know.

I've heard good things about John Lewis stylists and think I'll be booking a session if ok later in the year. I do echo @MehMehMeow 's advice. I recently got a cracking style book calle dc the Curated Closet which has really helped me look at developing my own style.

I think it is a good idea, especially if you are able to save a chunky budget for getting a few things.

I would go as high end as possible (Selfridges, HN) and really invest. Or get a private stylist. My friend did that and came away with amazing, funky beautiful things. So worth it.

You could ask a stylish friend to help instead, if you thought that would take the purchasing pressure off and you were under less pressure to buy that day/week.

I used Style by Suzie and was pleased with the results. You fill in a questionnaire and get lots of information back. You also can do a colour analysis, and she considers your personality (eg parisiaN edgy etc). as well as your shape. I’ve had a lot more compliments since I’ve made the changes advised. She’s reasonably priced as well.

IME the John Lewis ones are the best. They are also doing free styling online atm also. I had a private one who, despite me giving her very detailed info on what i was after/liked was so far off the mark I ended it early. Should have been warned by the opener ‘oh I’m not sure my choices will work’. They didn’t as she totally ignored the fact that I’m tall and need a tall sizing which I had said several times. The Debenhams one was ok but a more limited range though. I’d never pay for personal styling now

I think I'll have a look at the John Lewis site now and see what they come up with. Thanks for the replies.
