And make it look effortless?

It’s the Stunning but Didn’t Try Too Hard look IYSWIM

The “ how do I style my hair? I wash it and leave it to dry naturally (tinkly laugh) my top? Oh, this old thing. I never do any exercise, I walk the dog and carry my shopping in and that is it.”

Perfect hair, teeth, skin, figure, clothes.

What is their secret? I want it.

Money! It’s so much easier to look good when you have money. Most of my richer friends look more polished than my less well-off friends. One of my friends is very well off and her expensive clothes, skin care, make up, jewellery, perfume, basically everything, sits better because everything’s is better quality. Sadly, I’m in the poorer section and all the cheaper alternatives to her high quality items just don’t look or sits as nicely.

Good genes and consistent grooming routines (I have neither).

I have stopped drying my hair since lockdown and I honestly can’t tell the difference. I’m not that good at hair I think.

I always wear make up but that is because I have a couple of health problems that affect my appearance. I had a make up lesson and that helped.

Clothes wise I always put a lot of effort into thinking of something that looks like I’ve made no effort. I can’t really explain what that means. Sticking to one or two colours makes you look put together. Knowing what colours/styles suit you ditto.

Definitely money. Good skincare, proper manicures, dentistry, regular trips to the hairdresser, off the peg clothes but professionally altered to fit perfectly, a cleaner and gardener to do the heavy stuff. It all costs.

I’m not saying I look fantastic btw. I just feel happier when I feel good about what I am wearing.

I think getting your teeth whitened and straightened if they are crooked can make a massive difference to your appearance. It's really Expensive though!

Mainly money and photo filters.

Think about this: you're on your death bed, what would you rather be thinking? I had nice teeth or I was a good person?

Agree that beauty costs money! I can honestly say I dont know of a single person wh appearances ao just rolls out of bed with minimal effort looking fabulous. Every woman I know who looks amazing puts effort into it- good haircuts, makeup, gym time, good clothing etc

The people I know who make no effort tend to look scruffy and tatty and its just very obvious they dont bother. I am not bashing them for it- we are all different and we all place a different value on appearances etc and if you dont want to make an effort- thats fine! But I'm just saying that the people who DO look great clearly dont get that way by happy accident. Its money and effort.

Why is it either/or? I get botox and fillers AND I do lots of mental health charity work. I wont have any regrets on my death bed about helping others and also taking care of myself

Money and time

Any average looking person can look really good if they have that.

I’m trying really hard to hone this look while we are locked down. My (wealthy) friends make it look effortless and say they are low maintenance, but there is a lot they take for granted and don’t count as working towards it (massages, facials, manicures, long walks, no stress, better quality food, naps.....)

In my experience, it is sleep, diet and exercise with a bit of teeth whitening and a few facials now and then.

Many moons ago, I worked in the magazine industry alongside a woman in her 40s who always looked tremendous. There was a running joke that she could wear a bin bag and it would look like it had come from Gucci.

And it was basically because her skin, hair and figure were so good. So one day I asked her about it, and her answer was that it was her lifestyle. She got nine hours, at least, every night and ate a very clean Mediterranean diet with a lot of water and hardly any processed food.

I've always been inclined to believe her as she wasn't very well paid (none of us were) and since then, I've known very wealthy women who look shocking most of the time, largely because they don't get enough sleep and drink too much alcohol.

Look at the pictures of the 20 year old Diana Spencer and compare to 36/37 year old Diana, Princess of Wales.

Ah well I totally agree there is more to life than just looks of course.

But self care IS important. Its ok to make an effort with your appearance and to fix things about yourself that make you feel good. It doesnt make you a bad or a shallow person for wanting to self improve and actually, letting go of personal care is one of the first signs of depression.

You can look great and also be a kind, good hearted, and generous person.

^^. THIS is what I’m after. I look scruffy but my hair and skin are in tip top condition (before lockdown when I went to the gym/yoga class/ swimming pool and now I stay up late drinking wine and I look like shit today.)

When you get dressed in the morning, what do you think? For me it’s “what fits and is clean?” And it shows Sad

I’m always happier to be a bit overdressed rather than underdressed and I don’t keep things for best. I hate being hot or cold so I look at weather.

Dresses are easiest as much less thought required. Which bits do you like best about yourself? I’m a bit of an hourglass so I look better if I wear something that emphasises my waist (even if I’m not happy with what is going on south of that area).

Ardnassa · 17/05/2020 12:38

When I get up every morning I think "what will make me feel good". When I go to an office, that means sharp tailoring and luxurious fabrics which emphasise my figure (slim hourglass) without compromising on looking like I mean business.

Right now when WAH that means perfume, silk and cashmere. Hair is done as usual but no make-up, but a bit of By Terry hyaluronic powder to mattify for calls.

Oh and more generally, I get nearly everything tucked and tweaked by my seamstress. Adds an extra £25 to £40 onto each item but so worthwhile. Makes all the difference to my confidence - and my motivation for remaining the same size and shape - knowing that I am in perfectly fitting clothes!
