Skincare routine for oily skin

Wanting to start taking better care of my skin. I'm 34 this year and have been prone to oily skin all my life. What skincare routines do people use to help combat oil and shine? Would really like to try and brighten up my complexion too and stop it looking so dull and tired.

The first thing I’d ask is if you’re sure you’re really truly oily? A lot of people have dehydrated skin which stimulates the production of oil which in turn makes you treat your skin with increasingly harsher products.

What does your current skincare routine look like?

I don't really have a consistent one to be honest. I use Simple soap to wash my face and then use Clean and Clear deep cleansing lotion morning and night.

I’ve had oily skin all my life . I just use a face wash like simple or whatever is on offer ! But for oily skin and that’s it. Hardly ever use a moisturiser as I’m already greasy.
I use a primer under my foundation and pressed Powder on top and boot with tissue throughout the day.
I try not to put too much more powder on else I look cakey.
I’m 44 and the plus side to oily skin is that it keeps wrinkles at bay !

Oh at night I only use wipes to clean my face. Can’t be bothered to wash it

Stripping your skin with soaps and washes will make it a billion times worse.

Use an oil or cream based cleanser. Sounds counterproductive, but stripping your skin will make it produce more oil. Then tone with an acid based toner (Pixi Glow Tonic is great for this) then a serum and moisturiser.

It make take a couple of weeks, but you should notice a lessening of the oil quite quickly.

Caroline Hirons has loads of info about oily skin, so it’s worth having a look at her website and YouTube.

First thing I would do is ditch the soap or anything foaming. Try a cleansing oil or gel.

You’re using clean and clear but are you prone to spots?

Oily skin usually benefits from salicylic acid or BHA. Paula’s choice do a great one available in a travel size so you don’t have to spend a lot of money to see if it suits.

Niacinamide can be great for oily skin too.

I personally really like Caroline Hirons skincare advice. She’s got a lot of cheat sheets on her site that are very informative.

Have a look at brands like The Ordinary and The Inkey List. They’re a great way of figuring out if something works for your skin without spending lots of money.

I used to have very oily skin, and changed to:
Night time:

Cleanse (for me twice cause of makeup) with a cream or oil based cleanser (currently body shop chamomile balm and Superdrug hot cloth cleanser)

Niamicide and zinc acid from the ordinary (spots, yay 😂)

Moisturise with either Lavender night cream from Garnier/MudMasky sleep renewal/pomegranate skin thing, then follow with rose oil. Yep oil.

Morning:

Chamomile balm
Niamicide and Zinc
Revolution hydration gel

Et Voila, clear, oil free skin. Takes all of five minutes morning and night.

Been having a look at different brands this morning. I like the look of either Pixi or LA Roche-Posay. Anyone have any ideas/experience on whether either are any good?

I'm 44 with oily skin too and agree with a pp that it does 'eventually' pay off as I have very few lines and wrinkles to worry about at the moment!

I've hated my skin for years but now get lots of compliments and I feel it's under control at last. Here's the routine that after a lot of trial and error works for me:

Morning -
Wash with Korres face soap for oily skin
Vit C and hyaluronic acid (I use H&B)
Olay Complete moisturizer for oily skin
SPF (I use ultrasun as not greasy)

Evening
Dermalogica pre-cleanse
Dermalogica daily microfoliant or Olay daily facial wash
Avene facial tonic
Olay Complete night cream (oily skin version)

  1. Have always had oily skin, but as others have said, I don’t have any wrinkles now!

In the morning I splash with cold water, use the ordinary niacinimide, a moisturiser with SPF 50, hylauronic acid and a primer

At the end of the day I cleanse with an oil cleanser I make (50/50 castor oil and sweet almond or jojoba oil with some tea tree and lavender). Then the ordinary glycolic acid and Neals yard wild rose balm

Skin still gets shiny but very few spots and I have a glow. I also use the ordinary BHA and AHA chemical peel a couple of times a week

Thank you for all your responses! I've gone for: LA Roche Posay Effaclar set of face wash, cleanser and moisturiser, Pixi Glow tonic and a Nip and Fab scrub.
