How do I get pastel pink hair

Hi, I've got medium brown hair which I last dyed about 5 weeks ago. I have a few greys. While we're on lockdown I thought I'd try and get pastel pink hair. How do I do this? I'm thinking bleach it first and then pink dye but do I need to do anything else? Any tips would be great!

Are you thinking of doing your whole head pastel pink or just a streak? You will need to get your hair very, very light and if you have medium brown hair that is a big job, and there is a high chance of ending up with orange or yellow hair that won't take pink anyway. And if you already dye it with box dye, that is a whole other mess of issues! What length is your hair?

I am all about home hair dyeing and in fact I do bleach my own, but even I think you might want to steer clear of this!

I recommend watching lots of YouTube videos on home hair lightening fails because there’s so much that can go wrong, and at least you can learn from their mistakes and alter your technique.

I get my hair lightened at the salon and even though I’ve seen first hand what they do, I still wouldn’t do it on myself because there’s such a wide spectrum of things that can go wrong!

Bleech, then use the live colour xxl paste pink, the one that has bleech in it. It lifts and dyes pink but if your hair is medium brown you'll probably need to pre lighten first.

I've used it a few times on pre bleeched hair, it's good.

You would need to bleach it several times to get it light enough to put the pastel pink on.

It would take at least 2, probably 3 goes at bleaching your hair first.
Roots probably only the once.

And as an amateur, I'd do that over at a minimum 2 weeks, it will go orange and yellow and then you'll need to tone it with a toner, then it may be light enough to pastel pink it.

Your hair will also probably be fried...if you're lucky, chewing gum or falling out if you're not!

Its not an easy task .

This absolutely will not work on medium brown hair! That XXL stuff doesn't lift very much at all, is notoriously not very effective and that is without the fact that OPs hair already has brown box dye on it. It will just cause damage without giving anything like the desired effect.

The best thing for OP to do if you really wants to do this, is to bleach first - but you will probably need to do it several times using a lower volume developer. And then apply a semi permanent direct dye - these doing cause any actual damage but just deposit colour. I like the Superdrug ones mixed with conditioner to make it pastel.

But as I said, the chances you getting light enough for a pastel colour to take, without completely wrecking your hair, are low!

I had mine done pink before...hairdresser.
had to bleach it all first and even then it only lasted a couple of washes. Loved it though while it lasted! Wouldn't dream of doing it myself though.

I cannot stop watching Brad Mondo vids at the moment, and generally bleaching hair fail videos! They are just so compelling to watch!

The other thing is to make sure that you do your roots last because the heat from your scalp makes your roots lift faster so you will have really uneven colour if you do your roots first

but really, don't do this!

Might be beneficial to use a colour remover first to remove the dye you put on 5 weeks back. As a disclaimer though I'm definitely not a hairdresser

My dyed brown hair was getting harder to maintain as I had a lot of grey coming through. I decided to embrace the silver, so my hairdresser stripped the previous dye, then bleached (this process she was so careful with, as my hair is quite fine, and she didn't want to destroy my hair (obvs!). Once the bleach had lifted it enough, she put a silver toner on and purple (I wanted purple and silver rather than pink). The purple didn't last long, but she recommended a colour deposit shampoo called Viral, and that's amazing. The first time took HOURS - about 7 in total over 2 days, but my hair condition has kept well.

Now I only need smaller bleach touch ups where the brown comes in (as I'm mainly grey), don't need to bother with the purple dye, as I just use the shampoo. If you decide to go down this route (when you can get to the hairdressers!!), I'd definitely recommend the shampoo (they have loads of colours including pink).

Really, because I have medium brown hair and I've used that method several times even on my hair dyed dark red. It works fine. As I said you bleech first use a 8 shades lighter one, I use the live colour xxl, then use the lighten and dye live colour xxl pastel pink.

I have very dark brown hair naturally and it took 6-8 bleaches of xxl swaskof bleach to get it to a pale inside of a banana skin yellow which was pale enough to start dying whatever colours I wanted, for a pastel pink I would get a pink hair dye and dilute with conditioner, and then when you shampoo and condition your hair going forwards add some semi permant dye to your conditioner so you're always topping you're colour up, the only issue I had with my unnatural hair colour was cus my roots were so obvious I was having to bleach my roots every month, every two weeks would of been ideal.
