Buzz cut for infection control or wait till hairdressers reopen and get pixie cut?

I'm a nurse and I'm getting a bit obsessed with hair at the moment and what I might be bringing home in it.
We have to wash hair after every shift now and I have shoulder length permed hair so it's dry as hell.
I would really like to not have any hair right now but I'm also mildly worried about buzz cutting it as I'm not slim and have quite a round face. My hair does grow really fast so would be at pixie cut length in a month or 2 anyway.
In the perfect world I would go and get a short pixie cut but obviously that's not an option.
So opinions, a, buzz cut, b, wait for pixie cut, c, stop obsessing about something silly?

You are doing an amazing important job at the moment. Thank you.

How about accepting it will be dry at the moment, and deciding your style for the duration will be a pony tail, tied into a bun or something for work.

That way when this is over you have the most choices?

If it's longer than ideal, you could cut yourself. If the aim was simply a short pony tail it wouldn't matter how good or bad the cut was.

Hope this helps and thanks again for everything you are doing.

Katy

A buzz cut is a very unforgiving haircut imo.

Can you cover your hair at work? Use a thin snood / neck gaiter?

For daily washing, maybe a leave in conditioner in the interim?

I wouldn't go to a buzz cut unless you're being advised of a clinical need personally, but if it's making you anxious it's totally understandable.

Would you feel comfortable wearing something to cover it as an alternative? I completely understand how anxious you must be feeling, but as PP mentioned buzz cuts can be quite unforgiving if you don’t have the right face shape for it- not to mention as you won’t be able to get a professional to do it it could end up quite patchy/dodgy around the hairline. My worry personally would be making myself feel worse at an already difficult time.

Thank you for everything you are doing for us Flowers

I’m sorry you’re so anxious about your hair at the moment. I totally get it.

Also, there are suddenly a lot of ‘shaving my hair’ videos on YouTube and I think each and every one of them looks amazing!

Unfortunately my hair is so layered that to tie it up I end up with it in about 6 pony tails and it looks awful. Not that it matters. I have also asked about hair coverings but they are not on recommended Ppe so none available.

Clippers usually have various attachments to cut different lengths - I’d go with the buzzcut but on a longer setting. It’ll not look fab but probably better the a couple of mm and it’d certainly be easier to deal with than what you currently have.

Unforgivable that they won’t allow hair coverings

I would put up your hair as best you can (plait it when wet?) and wash it using a gentle shampoo, and leave in conditioner. Once a week if you have time, do a conditioning mask.

Thank you for the amazing work you do.

The clippers I have have a 3 attachment which I use to do dds undercut. Dd1 and dh are very supportive and dh said he thinks it will look lovely so I think I'm going to do it. Will just have to make sure I wear make up. (You know important stuff right now 😂)

I'm an HCA & wear my hair in a bun so I don't touch it during the shift.

Long shot but are any of your colleagues former hairdressers? I've been giving quick trims to my colleagues in my key worker role (nb - like a nurse it is physically impossible for me to social distance from my colleagues during my normal duties).

I'd just do it. So what if your face isn't the right shape or whatever, who honestly cares? You're doing a fantastic job and I say go with whatever is the easiest thing for you to feel clean/safe through your working hours. Thank you for all you and your colleagues do.

I would grab the hairdresser and either ask her for a pixie cut or two, tight, gelled french braids - done properly they should last you a week and then she could do them again for you.

I'd be happy to oblige but depending on my sift pattern would probably offer the braids over the pixie cut. They take literally five minutes.

Buzz buzz buzz! I'd bloody love a buzz cut, I think they look great on women. I have a pixie and am trying to grow the ovaries to go the whole way.

I'd go for it! I used to have a buzz cut and it was so liberating... would love to have another. Maybe covid is the perfect excuse!!

I do mine with a no8 (you can get a no10 and a no12 on Amazon). Also, it will grow really quickly. You're doing a brilliant job and if your hair is making you anxious I would do it. It'll grow to be in better condition too.

Is number 3 way to short, that's the only blade I've got

This.

You’re right that makeup makes a difference. I’d concentrate on eyeliner and blusher (esp as you are worried about round face).

I did number 3 once and it wasn’t skinhead looking IYSWIM.

No3 is quite short but you could maybe get your DH to do it with the no3 and a comb underneath? Or his fingers - as in palm flat and feed your hair through is fingers - like as if his fingers are a comb? I'm not sure that makes sense?

OP, many salon supply shops are still delivering and clipper blades are only around a quid each. You should start with a blade 6 at least and work your way down. Three is very short.

I’ve just done a 3 all over. Bloody love it. Key worker here!
