Help me find the best box hair dye

Hello!

I'm obviously distancing from the salon at the moment and have had my roots done there for a very long time.

What box/diy hair dyes can you recommend me? There is quite a lot of grey coming through - naturally my hair is a goldeny-brown colour at the roots... lighter at the ends and I like to keep it natural-looking.

I'm looking for something that isn't going to go scarily a lot darker than it says on the tin and is easy to use.

Do you know what your salon uses OP? My hairdresser uses Wella Koleston 55/0 for me and HP 6% - she showed me how to mix it and I've been using this in between salon visits - frankly I'll be using this for the foreseeable future! I've found this much better than box dyes.

I agree with mommybear. Find out what numbers your salon uses on your hair and even if you can’t buy the same brand, you can mix up a very similar concoction to touch up your roots. It’s much better for your hair than box dye as you can target it with a fine brush on just the bits that need doing. It’s also cheaper in the long run as you can mix up a tiny amount and do the regrowth as often as you need to, as long as you’re not overlapping.

Wella Koleston comes in hundreds of shades and you can get it from Amazon without a trade card.

If I had to go into a shop today and buy a box dye I'd go for the Garnier Belle colour range above all others.
I think they give a more natural colour result and leave hair in decent condition.

Buy wella kolaston online. Million squillion times better. Most good hairdressers use it

Can anyone who uses koleston advise on what to mix it with and the ratio please? I would like to colour my roots a mid to dark blonde (a 7 I think) and then just do some foil highlights on the front section to lift it - I think I usually have a ligh lift product for that at the salon.

Also use kolaston with 6% peroxide, really easy to do your own roots and much better results than box dyes.

Oh amazing advice, thank you... I didn't know you could get the hairdresser dye online. I think they use Redken and I always have number 7. But I could always ask!
Don't want to upset the salon owner though as times are obviously tough for them at the moment.
Will check out the other suggestions on the shelves if no luck with the hairdresser.

I use the Olia boxes, albeit in the excitingly named 'dark brown' (which is pretty much identical to my natural colour).

Wella so much easier to use than box die as it’s really thick. Covers greys so much better too. I have really resistant grey. Box dyes just don’t take on it.

I use majirel..only 6 quid on eBay a lot cheaper than the hair supplies shops.. very very hard to buy redken dyes and toners on the net..I have looked everywhere. Sometimes they pop up on eBay but never my shade..

Hairdresser here ok,
All good colours show what ratio to use on the packaging. I use wella and it’s 1:1. Here’s what HP (developer) to use

Same shade or darker for natural hair with no grey 4%

Same shade or darker with some grey for good coverage 6%

Don’t go over 6% at home as it may fry your hair.

Realistically, how hard would it be for a novice to do their own hair and highlights as suggested upthread? Are there any recommended YouTube videos?

I'd be a bit worried that I'd end up looking like a patchy badger.

I haven't been able to get to a salon since before Christmas (single mum and very clingy toddler) but I got a custom blend dye to apply at home from a company called esalon. I did have my colour formula from my hair dresser which helped a lot, but you upload a pic of yourself plus choose from colour charts. I've used it twice now and am really pleased. My grays were very obvious and didn't grow out in a nice way.
