And Zara slouch.... Zara have never fitted me downstairs before but these do. Please share yours too Smile

You look great! It’s def a very young look, this is what the youngsters are wearing here. Did you post ”skinnies” pics sometime before for comparison?

You look great! I'm also loving non skinnies, wide leg, barrel leg, this 80s thing you're rocking, it's all so great, so comfortable.

I really like the black or navy ones on the left in second row - where are they from?

Snooks1971 · 23/02/2020 20:12

@banivani thanks! I haven’t posted any skinnies pics so far but maybe I should. Safe to say I felt like I was resembling a parsnip in them these days though and have been desperate for a change and feel like I’ve got a new lease of (wardrobe) life. I get what you mean about them being a young look but I actually feel that skinnies are a younger look than these, maybe it’s because these are so comfortable and more forgiving Grin plus I’m 49 next month.

@dudsville ooh please share what yours are!

@Almahart they are the Lucy&Yak Alexa cotton trousers, shamelessly stolen from another S&B thread! They are £28 and come in a myriad of colours. Sizing is generous: I’m a generous size 12 sometimes 14 and these are Small size 10-12 and incredibly ample. They have pockets too! And belt loops on the very wide high elasticated waist for a statement belt should you feel the need 👍🏼

Loving your look!

I started wearing mom jeans and cropped, wide leg trousers in summer last year but disappointingly gravitated back to skinnies and boots in winter as I just couldn’t bear cold ankles. I desperately need to update my cold weather wardrobe! Thanks for the inspiration!

I think they make you look bigger than you are

Report
mamamalt · 23/02/2020 20:52

Omg I think I'm going to get some of the cotton ones! Did you try on before you buy or just order and take the plunge?
Also totally disagree that they make you look bigger. Nothing makes me look fatter than squeezing into skinny jeans in certain colours

Report
JuanSheetIsPlenty · 23/02/2020 20:53

Oh. Sorry- I don’t think they suit or flatter you at all OP! I’m sure there are non skinny’s that would suit you better. But hey- if you like them- and there comfortable then ignore me! Grin

Report
AnnDaloozier · 23/02/2020 20:53

You don’t need to squeeze. Just so much material. You’ve lost any shape.

Report
Snooks1971 · 23/02/2020 21:03

@mamamalt I ordered 3 pairs to try, it’s free delivery (I think) over £50 but free returns regardless. Go for it!

@JuanSheetIsPlenty and @AnnDaloozier always up for constructive criticism! Can you offer any alternatives? I was concerned at first but have had genuinely good feedback from a few nearest people who I trust that they are indeed flattering - especially as they emphasise the waist. Do you both wear skinnies?

@StrongTeaDropOfMilkNoSugar yes cold ankles are a drawback I must admit!

I wouldn't put puff-sleeved tops with big, wide jeans. That almost becomes clown-levels of material! 🤡

With the cropped sweatshirt, they look great.

I gave up skinnies a few years ago. I kept a pair just in case, but they have never been on. I wear:

Cropped wide-leg trousers - mainly Cos
Barrel leg jeans - Whistles
Levi’s 501s

For me the trick is that the top must be fitted, tucked in, or slightly cropped, so it sits just on the waist.

Ref cold ankles, I wear knee high socks. I have charcoal grey, black, and navy pairs from the school bit in M&S, and stripy Lucy and Yak ones for with jeans.

I’m 5ft 6, size 10 if that helps.

I think the fit is key with these sorts of trousers. They're meant to be a bit big, and slouchy. So if you size down, they can end up pulling oddly and being quite unflattering.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses Very helpful, thanks! Can I ask what shoes you wear with each type of trouser in winter please? Am trying to picture the trousers with socks and I can’t (I’m so unimaginative!).

strong I wear a lot of trainers. I have Stan Smiths, both black and white, Continental 80s, a black pair, and a grey pair, gold Nike Air Max, and black and white Vejas.

I tend to wear the trainers with jeans, but also with crop wide legs, which I have in wool, and in cord. I wear white trainers with blue jeans more. To my mind you need a visual "gap" in place of where you would have a bare ankle in summer, so black trousers and grey socks, rather than black trousers and black socks.

Today I'm wearing:

Black Levi's 501, in a 26" length, so they are sitting just above my ankle bone;
Black slightly cropped turtleneck jumper from Other Stories, which is sitting just on my waist band, with a black vest top underneath;
Black Doctor Marten Church boots, and black sparkly ankle socks - socks are from Whistles. The socks pretty much bridge the gap unless they fall down, but the sparkle gives them a point of interest;
Also a big Tatty Devine necklace to break up all the black

These are the boots, which are kind of a hybrid between DM shoes and DM boots. I like them with opaque tights and short skirts/dresses too. (I work in a fairly creative role, so I don't need to be formally dressed for work.)

Hi OP, they look great especially the black.

Judy - your outfit to-day sounds fab. I too have stopped with the skinnies and like you keep a pair just in case for winter boots but they are so uncomfortable now that I wear leggings instead in the heavy rain with my wellies.

I love cropped wide leg jeans and trousers with runners (white) and also have cropped straight leg jeans. I find the cropped styles are more modern and less "mums".

How much clothes flatter you is not the only measure of their merit.

Are they comfy? Do they make you feel good? Do they represent the style you want to put project? Are they appropriate for the moment?

I think you look great OP and have been collecting trousers myself a bit too recently. I have one pair of charity shop skinnies for walking when wellies are required.

@buytheworldacoke the tortoiseshell? They’re SuperDry from SpecSavers pretty recently.

@Judystilldreamsofhorses (great song reference btw) I love those DMs you’ve linked to... might have to save up. I haven’t worn any of my trainers yet with them, it was out of my comfort zone at the time and I need another trying on sesh.

Re the cold ankles, I have worn a pair of Tu footless tights underneath on a few occasions just to give an extra layer (those balloon legs can sure let in some draughts!) and big slouchy boot socks.

@ThursdayLastWeek good comment re clothes that flatter....

Yes to all of the above! This sort of shape is a revolution for me after years and years of skinnies; I so needed a change. I’m still learning and tweaking what goes best but irl I’ve had some very positive reactions. Not that that matters, it’s how I feel - and I feel good Grin

Same OP, I got bored last year and haven't looked back, I find mom jeans or slim straight leg a really easy way to look more current but they aren't that flattering (not that they need to be). If anything I have enjoyed 'learning' that I don't need to flatter my body to feel cool in an outfit and it's changed the way I dress entirely and I dress much more expressively.

I like some of your options - black and red looks great and I like the green trousers but the silhouette is sort of the same in all of them and I personally wouldn't wear a puff sleeve with a puffy trouser, for me it detracts from the shaping of the trousers and is more casual than I tend to dress- but that is me, and means nothing really!
