Which every day facial SPF do you use when using retinols?

I want to start using a retinol but am aware that if I do, I need to use an SPF in the morning. I use a moisturiser which has SPF 15 but wonder if this is sufficient

If you use a factor 50 every day, which one do you use? I don’t want something which feels heavy or greasy.

I’ve gone through so many over the years I’ve been using retin-a.
Only one has had none of the usual downsides of greasiness or white/grey cast or making my eyes sting.
Heliocare advanced gel, spf50.
It’s such good stuff, just acts and feels like a regular moisturiser. I’ve been using it now for 4+ years. Occasionally try something different (usually something that’s being raved about on here) and never lasted more than a couple of uses before going back to Heliocare.
Literally zero negatives to it.

The Kate Somerville spray - it's 50 and super-light (though I don't really like the vaguely lavender scent-it dissipates immediately)

As you say, you do really need to be using SPF 50 that's separate to another product - otherwise, you are basically wasting time and money with the retinol, as well as ultimately causing more serious damage to your skin.

I use biore watery essence spf50.
I have to order it from Japan but delivery is very quick.

Biore watery essence. Both the aqua and gel versions are good.

Regular retinoids user here. Biore bright milk SPF50. I prefer it to Biore watery essence. Order on eBay from a Japanese seller. I have oily skin and this doesn’t make it worse or sting my eyes (frezyderm spf 50 was awful for my eyes).

What are retinols? Do they do anything very noticeable?

I used Biore Watery essence for a while and liked it as it's non greasy but found it dried my skin up a bit too much, especially around my eyes. I then switched to Biore bright face milk (pink bottle) and it's my sunscreen holy grail. Light, non greasy and feels like a primer under my make up. Use it every single day of the year.

Sorry for intruding on your post OP, but as a new retinol user, I'm wondering if it's necessary to use SPF50 every day throughout the winter? I live in a part of the uk with very little sunlight from October to April!!!

Heliocare, same as pp. So good that I’ve had to get another as my DH uses it too: Heliocare 360º Fluid Cream Sun Block / Sun Cream www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00J5G5712?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

I use Altruist SPF 50. Sinks in nicely, and doesn't cost the earth!

Don't use retinol of a daytime, only put it on at night
Use something with vitamin C of a daytime, and use spf too

Neostrata Sheer Physical Protection SPF 50 - it’s a tinted sunscreen that is fine on my pale skin and is honestly my holy grail of skincare - I use it as my base now and rarely anything else. You have to shake it thoroughly to mix it the first time you use it.

I sell sunscreens and also provide skin assessments, facials, and other skin treatments. Imo, the best sunscreens are those that contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, as these ingredients provide a physical barrier to the damaging UVA and UVB rays. The best products which contain these ingredients are Neostrata's Sheer Physical Protection, and Heliocare's Dry Touch Gel. Both provide SPF50.

Biore acqua 50+ too. I dont think it matters where you live and how much sunlight you see - if you are using retinol and vit c - sunscreen is essential. Is just becomes as post serum habit for me and not worth that potential sun exposure when you accidentally forgot to apply!

Currently I'm using the Heliocare dry touch 50. I have a tendency to oiliness. It's excellent. Atm it's my favourite.
Biore is also good, very lightweight and invisible. Tho probably not best suited for use in out-all-day high summer sunshine. Good for work days.
Neostrata Sheer Physical Protection is also good but a little pale for my skin. I am a pale and ever so slightly sallow and it's very pale for me.
If I'm going for a run I use the La Roche Posay Anthelios.
Avene do a good one too, which I've used and thought was good. Can't remember why I don't use it now. I know it was good.

This is great, doesn't leave a white cast and is totally non oily, leaves a matte finish

Heliocare SPF 50 cream, I've been using it for a few years now. My skin is quite reactive and it can be tricky to find products that it agrees with. I love it!

Retinol is best to use at night and Vitamin C serum in the morning. I also love the Roche Posay suncream with a minimum of spf 30....Hope this helps....

I use LRP Anthelios (Shaka fluid) in spf50 every single day, even at this time of year when I know I’m not going to spend more than the 10 minutes it takes me to walk from Bank tube station to my office in any kind of daylight and even though I also wear a CC cream with an spf in it.

I’m certain there is a skincare scandal brewing with spf advertised in makeup products, and people believing they are protected by a thin layer of their CC creams and no other sunscreen. I really like watching YouTube videos by Dominique Sachse but was horrified that she was telling people they if they used a CC cream like It Cosmetics they didn’t need an additional sunscreen. Someone with her experience should know better and I’m sure one of these days the US FDA or the EU equivalent is going to clamp down on that kind of advertising.
