I am not going to buy clothes in 2020

I have a stuffed-to-bursting wardrobe and I have everything covered from beach to snow to weddings and parties. I don't need to buy any more clothes, I need to lose 2 stone so that everything in my wardrobe fits me.

I have just binged in the sales and have bought another 3 dresses, 2 tops and a pair of work trousers. I really, really don't need anything. Anyone else?

Not quite the same, but for the past 8 months I've only bought clothes second hand and I plan to continue this in 2020. Good for the environment and good for my pocket.

I will join you on this. Beautiful clothes are my absolute weakness. I am frugal in every other respect except this one.

But I am pretty sure that I have all the beautiful clothes I could ever want now. From DIY to black tie dos, from holidays in the snow and ice to beach breaks, plus an immaculate work wardrobe.

I wear mostly vintage/second-hand but even then: enough is enough! I am done.

I’d love to throw it all out and start again! I have mountains of clothes that I don’t even remember I have - and hit huge amounts of room.

Big clear out and trip to the charity shop I think.

I have sooooo many clothes
I’m planning on getting down to my target weight and then trying everything on before making 3 piles of sell, charity bag or keep .

In 2019 I bought a leather jacket and a hoody from a charity shop. That was all. All clothing purchases for the year. Any time I wanted a splurge I kondo'd my wardrobe. This process for a year means I now finally have a grown up capsule wardrobe, all seasons and events covered. I'm so content.

I just had boots I love re-heeled as I think once you do actually like what you wear you don't want to dilute or replace it.

Understand that loosing weight would obv impact this, but you'll probably end up feeling doubly brilliant.

I agree with you about losing a bit of weight. I'd have so many clothes if I could shift 10 kilos.

I’m doing a vintage only year. Planning on buying some new sportswear this week then I’m pledging that that’s it for ‘new’ new for a year. ...I love shopping and clothes but I can see that shop til you drop consumerism has had its day and have been shopping more mindfully for a few years. Hit me up with any vintage/second hand treasure troves please ☺️

I have the opposite problem and have lost weight so can't wear any trousers I had in an 8 anymore. I can't find much to fit in charity shops either, so I will need to buy an interview outfit but not much else. I buy most children's clothing used off of eBay already as there is so much good quality and barely worn, and DC just like comfy basics like jeans and t-shirts in nice colours.

I cull my wardrobe regularly and try not to impulse buy .
I write everything down in a diary (just kept for me)

I usually browse online and buy instore (if I want to see it IRL or try it on) or see something instore and either go off and think about it or buy it online later .

My biggest weakness is jumpers but my biggest bugbear is the short boxy styles .
M&S and their S/M/L sizes (I am between M/L but they are often too wide)
Primark changed their sizings and I find the same
Uniqlo are great quality and sizing is consistant but the colours are weird .

In the Sales : I bought 2 pairs of leggings . I's already bought 2-pack to try and the fit is better .

I need new bras , I had surgery and have a scar that is awkward .

I need to lose weight which I'm onto.

Thanks for the new thread Grin

I tried this last year but allowed myself to make minimal purchases. I think I cut it down to 15 items of clothing last year but many of these were direct replacements that couldn't be avoided eg new swimsuit and gym clothes to replace ones that were going into holes. I want to lose weight so I can access more clothes in my wardrobe. I've also realised that I like buying clothes for a lifestyle I don't have, so want to avoid buying more smart clothes.

@tuppencedarling most of my vintage (midcentury, most 30s, late 40s and 50s) is from etsy but I can thoroughly recommend Blackout II in Covent Garden if you haven't been?

I'm going to need a swimsuit too, as mine is too big. I think there are some things that are unavoidable.

I'm with you OP. I went through a stage this year of buying lots of clothes as I wanted to look nice again. But the reason I wasn't happy with the way I looked is because I'm about 3/4 stone over weight, so the clothes looked shit anyway Confused I've just paid off my NEXT account so am planning on not buying anything else, as like you, I have all eventualities covered, so I'm not buying anything now until I have to.

I need to do this too, I have so many clothes and I wear uniform for work 3 days a week and at least 1 day in my pjs 😂

going to gut my wardrobe, sell the stuff I won't use and keep money aside for essentials (bras/pants etc) if I need throughout the year.

@SheisMammyof2 I am planning on doing this. My best mate did it last year but she has “the eye” and always looks amazing, can come out of a charity shop with a bulging bag of treasures for like a tenner.

I’ve realised my wardrobe has no set “style” and that’s my problem. Loads of bits and bobs but no coherent order. At 37 I really feel I should have my style ideas sorted but I don’t and so I end up wearing plain boring nonsense every day.

Tempted to do this too. I've bought a bunch of stuff in the sale and have a massive wardrobe. I think I'd need to make an exception for bras - I'm very big busted and still breastfeeding but likely to stop at some point during the year so no chance my bras will see me through.

I have a major shopping habit though so not sure I could manage it

When I’m bored I spend far too much time on S&B and far too much money online on clothes. I end up sending a lot of it back but it’s become a bit of a habit. Like others I have a very full wardrobe but since hitting 50 my body shape has changed so I don’t wear any of my old favourites any more.

I put a John Lewis order in last night but I don’t want to buy anything else

Hello

I’m planning to only buy second hand clothes & accessories for myselfnext year. I already buy about half of mine and the dcs clothes from eBay and charity shops for cost and environmental reasons.

Exception will be underwear (though I shouldn’t need any) and shoes (buggered feet Hmm)

I’m going to have a clear out and try a ‘sort of’ capsule wardrobe, get rid of anything that is too tatty, mend/alter what is necessary and organise stuff so that it’s easier to put outfits together.

TableNiner · 28/12/2019 12:45

I’m limiting myself to one clothes and accessories purchase a month, ideally a better quality piece that will last, although amount spent often bears no resemblance to durability. I am also logging everything on the Stylebook app so I can see what I actually wear. I didn’t think I had a massive wardrobe but I’m up to 140 items (not including underwear and socks)

Clothes are also my weakness, and shoes, and bags.... but I've just put out 4 huge bin liners of nearly new clothes that have overfilled my wardrobe and aren't getting the wear. I really need to cull back clothes spends, it's a waste of money

Report
applesandpears33 · 28/12/2019 12:51

I'm also trying to get rid of older clothes that should have been thrown out a long time ago. Although I have nice clothes I still choose to wear the old, tatty, faded and stained ones when I'm not at work. I'm forcing myself to throw out something once a week.

@TableNiner is Stylebook available on android do you know? Never heard of it but a quick Google and it looks good. However I can't find it in the play store.

Just checked my wardrobe. I think this last year I have only bought:

four tops,
one pair of jeans (charity shop)
one dress
one yoga set of top and leggings.

I will try to continue my minimal spend next year and will continue to Kondo the existing wardrobe (I'm looking at you, black tunic top that it's always too cold to wear).

someone on MN commented once that you'll never love an item of clothing as much as when you're standing in the queue waiting to pay for it, so I will try and bear that in mind when I feel tempted!

I need at least one pair of new jeans but I'm dreading/wondering where I can try some on without there being some male creeping about in the changing rooms. Apart from that, no I won't be buying anything else.
