Should I dye my hair darker? With pic.

This is me au natural, with absolutely no make up and hair just washed with conditioner and left to dry on its own. As you can see, I am very pale and quite fair. This is more or less my natural hair colour, except a very ill advised experiment with some of that "go blonder" spray Xmas Hmm.

Anyway, I am trying to grow out my hair at the moment, but what about the colour? I've never had it dark before, but maybe now is the time.

I quite fancy a warm, medium brown, like this pic (the one with long hair, ie not me).

What do people think please?

You suit your natural colouring really well (you're very pretty with gorgeous skin) but I feel you'd have to dye your eyebrows darker as you would look like you didn't have any otherwise if you go as dark as the second pic. I have mid brown hair and blond eyebrows (was blond when younger and naturally darkened) so I have to dye them a light brown. I do it at home so it's not left on too long. I find I need no make up either if my eyebrows are done 😄

I think your current hair colour perfectly matches the colour of your eyelashes, eyebrows, eyes and lips.

If you go for darker hair, your eyes may stand out more but your skin colour will look washed out. You will need to wear more make up to pull it off.

Your current hair colour is the colour for you I think!

I like the darker brown but only if you grow your hair a bit longer I think

I think your natural hair colour suits you more than dark brown would.

Do you usually wear make up? I agree with pp that with darker hair you would probably need some to balance it, otherwise your face will disappear.

I actually wouldn’t do it. Your natural colour is lovely.

Thanks all! I think you're right and I should stick to my natural colour, but I just fancied a change and hoped brown might make it look a bit shinier etc. I would definitely need to keep on top of getting my eyebrows tinted if I did it, or else do them myself.

Also, the roots might be dreadful. Ah well.

Thanks anyway!

I'm definitely growing it longer, but that will obviously take some time.

You would need to wear quite dramatic make up, like the model, to pull it off. And the root touch up would be hellish.

Oh sorry, I wear makeup about twice, maybe three times a week. Just depending on what I am doing on any given day.

I'm a similar colour but a bit paler and with slightly blonder hair and I rarely wear make up any more except doing my brows - they are a nice shape but virtually translucent and my lashes - both in brown. It makes such a difference to my face and makes my face so much more defined.

There's shine, gloss and shimmer products and ranges for fair hair. John Frieda have some, Kevin Murphy has a range (Shimmer Me Blonde?) and so do Kerastase (Blond Lumiere). You could also have a glossing treatment done at a salon.

Your natural colour suits your skin tone and features perfectly IMO.

I wouldn't.
I think with your overall colouring ( which is lovely) you will run the risk of looking a bit 'wiggy' unless you wear tan/make-up.
Sorry.

Thanks. Yes, if I am wearing makeup I always do my eyebrows, but it can be hit and miss, depending on how well I manage to do them. If I'm wearing makeup it is usually just tinted moisturiser blusher, eyebrows and mascara. If i go out properly, I wear more but that doesn't happen all that often.

If I go to a salon for eyebrow tinting, they either come out very red or alarmingly dark for a few days. They're nice enough after those few days, but then I have to go back and get them done again 🤔.

If you just fancy a change what about some lowlights? Less commitment with roots and it'll be less harsh against your lovely fair skin but will give depth to your hair and warm you up a bit.

Have you thought about a warmer colour such as strawberry blonde, or a rich auburn?

Report
afterme · 02/12/2019 18:01

Yes I think you could go more red.

I immediately thought “That’s Tilda Swinton’s colouring!”.

You should go vibrant red, or strawberry blonde, and wear blood red lipstick. Hollywood curls. You’d look fabulous!!

You could go more coppery,I think it would suit your colouring

I think some warm undertones would be gorgeous on you.

Have a look at rich strawberry blonde colours on google and see if any inspire you. I also love rose gold champagne colour but it's not for everyone as has pinky hues in it.

I think the ones I've attached here are classic but modern and would just be bringing out the best in your natural colouring.

Ooooooh I hadn't thought of going more red...

Am I maybe not quirky/trendy looking enough for this sort of thing? Is it a bit too pink maybe?

As others have said you have beautiful skin and some warmth through your hair will really showcase it. Would definitely go down the red route rather than brunette with your colouring, would be gorgeous.

You're hair colour is great. Deep auburn low lights rather than blond highlights would look lovely

I really think natural copper and gentle strawberry / gold tones though rather than bright reds, especially if you haven't gone red before as it sticks around for absolutely AGES if you try to dye it another colour so I'd ramp up the warmth gently at least at first.
