Where have you bought your children's winter coats this year? I need some ideas, it's getting very cold and a warm coat is a must for school.

Ah, I want to know too! It seems like the choice is a Decathlon type one which will be waterproof but not that warm and not bum covering.
Or m&s and the like which are toasty and warm and long but not waterproof!

Mountain warehouse for my toddler. Really warm and waterproof. It's basically a tiny ski coat. It was £30 down from 60

North face. It wasn’t cheap but it stands up to all weathers.

How long are these ones? All the outdoor shop types I’ve found don’t cover the bum and my kids really need that as walk to school in all weathers

I bought DD a ski type jacket from Boden, in the sale; it’s lovely- waterproof and warm!

Polarn o Pyret padded winter coat - bum covering, waterproof and warm. Coveted a Spotty Otter explorer parka but very expensive!

The north face is bum covering although we did size up to prolong wear. It’s so warm that it might be a bit much for British winters though, I wouldn’t have bought it if we still lived in London.

GAP in their (neverending) sale.

I’ve been buying my kids’ winter coats from GAP (the ‘warmest’ thickness) for 7 years and have never had any issues - they are hard wearing and the smaller ones have now been resilient against two very active boys. I particularly like the length (over the bum even on tall kids) and large hoods (my kids have big heads). They’re really warm and properly waterproof. And as a PP said GAP are always having a sale - I’ve never bought one for more than 40% off.

There's also an extra 5% off (jassy and anyone else) if you use their app to buy. I tend to buy in spring/summer for the following year - DD's current one was £13 down from about £50.

VillerValla, such good quality, scandi weather proof and lovely colour choices. I don't lose mine in a crowd.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Are the GAP Parkas better or their Padded Puffer coats??

I bought dd a coat from Asda yesterday. It's lovely and warm, fur inside and covers her bum. A bargain at £22.
Ideal for nursery in the cold mornings.

I’ve just checked the website - the one we have is the ColdControl Max Puffer Parka. They change the name more often than the design!

Thanks for the tip Essential!

La Redoute. Nice and warm and waterproof. Usually I buy 3 sizes too big in the Landsend sale and they are stuck with them for 3 years, but there were complaints this time!

(And for under 5s they just seem to call it the coldcontrol max puffer...)

Thanks @JassyRadlett, that's the one I was looking at, seems very warm and comfortable! Have ordered that one for my son and now need to find something for my daughter as well.

Next, got a fab warm waterproof fully reflective one that is really blingy. Looks grey in the pics. Ds(9) loves it, so I secretly bought one for ds(6) for him to grow into as hes wearing his brothers cast off. Also from Next.

Hurrah! I’m an evangelist for them. My pair are always toasty warm and they are incredibly hard wearing (they have to be to survive two lots of nursery and forest school!)

Mountain Warehouse here. We went to Clark’s Shopping village and got them a bit cheaper, lovely and warm!

I have lived on the US East coast where the temperature drops to ridiculous levels. But it doesn’t rain.
So here is my UK coat advice for kids:

  1. Mountain Warehouse do a 3 in 1 which is fab. It’s waterproof and warm especially when warn over a sweater. It is almost always enough for the UK.

Jojo Maman Bebe do a similar one and they are also warm.
  1. If you want to buy a padded coat you should buy one with down or a down alternative. My boys wear Patagonia down coats which were about 99 dollars to 120 dollars in the US. But they often didn’t need a sweater under it in the UK they were so warm.
  2. Gap does down coats for boys as well and they are reasonably priced. Not the bog standard puffer ones though. Just look through what the inside filling is.
  3. Boden does a parka which is again quite warm and waterproof.
  4. In the US my son’s school recommended Lands End. They are durable well made and again have down coats with a waterproof exterior that is perfect. (And much less bulky than the Gap equivalent).
