Has the Breton striped top finally died?

I just began to ponder whether the ubiquitous Breton stripe top has finally died a death. Without anyone telling me you can wear whatever you like (obviously) what do we all think?

I love mine and it will be prised from my cold, dead hands.

I don't think it will ever die!

I've worn one since the 80s and will carry on for ever (not the same top)

I love my Breton and won’t be told otherwise!! It’s just such an easy outfit when I can’t be bothered to think. Jeans, Breton, leather jacket, boots, done.

I don’t feel exactly fashion-forward wearing one, but I’ll still wear one if I feel like it.

Tbh I can’t see myself buying any new ones though.

I have a lovely stretchy v neck one which I will wear with pride next year on my Cornish holiday. 👍😁

Still saw many of them in Gap today 🧐

Actually dd and I laughed today because outside the private school in my road was a "stripe" of Bretons (anyone got a better collective noun?!). There were no fewer than four mums chatting together in navy and white Breton tops. I wonder if they noticed...

It’s classic spring/summer wear like the trench coat. Will never go out of style

Stripey Breton tops are classic casual wear. I've been wearing them for years and have no intention of stopping. Should they ever go out of style I'll still be wearing them even if I have to go France to buy replacements.

DD once saw a woman in a shop wearing what she called "my mummy uniform" which was breton top and jeans. Grin

I love mine and will wear with pride-think gets tweaked every year but keeps on coming back!

If the mums at our school pickup didn’t have (slightly) different hairstyles and cackles, you’d never tell them apart. Bretons as far as the eye can see. I can never stop myself saying ‘oooo I didn’t get the memo’ as I walk up. One had a grey & white Breton stripe today- very daring indeed!

My DD is desperate for me to buy one, poor love is so embarrassed by her rebellious mum! I strongly suspect she’ll have one under the xmas tree for me, and that she’ll have no trouble tracking one down. I might have to add a red bandana and a croissant in a basket if she does...perhaps a bike and a string of garlic? Grin

'cackles'? Charming.

I don't think they're trendy any more, but pretty harmless/neutral.

Yes I think it has gone the way of ballet pumps and skinny jeans at my school gate - no one wears these any more. I'm sure it will come back into fashion but seems a bit "can't be bothered" these days.

I hope not as I have about 4 I haven't even worn yet. Not navy though, different colours.

I've worn stripey jumpers, t shirts and Breton's for over twenty years. I wear them because I love them and nothing to do with what's in fashion.

I love Bretons and will not stop wearing them. They'll come back in again, everything always does.

I'm a bit tired of them. Not that I'm a thermometer of fashion.
My DDs won't wear stripes at all. They consider them cringey.
I think the stripe may have gone into hibernation fro a wee while.

I never ever noticed this outside of Mumsnet. I need to keep a closer eye on people! The only thing I’ve found to be ubiquitous at the school gates this time of year are those padded duvet coats with belts.

I bloody love a stripy top and have worn them for as long as I can remember. I've even got two striped t-shirt dresses (mid blue/white and navy/green) and a navy/white tube skirt. Then again, I'm the sort of person who, on seeing a thread titled 'Can I wear this dress?', instantly thinks 'Of course you can, you don't need my permission'.

I've got to say though, even though they ARE Breton shirts, I've never referred to them as that - always just 'stripy tops'. Do feel free to send any unloved size 12s to me!
