What exactly is the relationship between mumsnet and hush?

Is this advertising?

It gets a lot of airtime in the old swears by etc yet I've only ever bought shoddily made expensive shit from them and everyone I know has had the same experience.

@RunningOutOfCharacte some of us love Hush. Occasionally you get a dud in terms of quality but that's true if Many retailers. I like it myself and enjoy a good sale browse

Honestly it's fine that people like hush! It doesn't bother me.

I just think mumsnet are on thin ice with not making it clear what the relationship is.

How does it work with Swears by? I thought the strap line is you can't buy a recommendation?

How does mumsnet choose hush things (most weeks!) above other brands that they won't get commission on?

And what other brands are sponsored by mumsnet? I see some brands get mentioned a lot and now I'm wondering whether mumsnet also gets money off them. How do we find out which are sponsored links?

RunningOutOfCharacte you're right, brands can't buy slots in Swears By - everything we include is driven by user recommendations (Mumsnetters just seem to talk about Hush an awful lot, which is why they're often featured).

The Swears By newsletter does contain affiliate links, and you'll see an affiliate disclaimer at the bottom of every Swears By newsletter we send.

Isn't there a conflict of interest though if you get profits from Hush being featured in swears by?

I mean if I worked for Hush and I knew that all I need is a few mentions it wouldn't take much to open a few accounts and have a few items being spoken about would it?

I see the link. But I couldn't find where it told me what specific brands you get a profit from. Is there a way of finding that out?

It would be interesting to see the ratio of affiliated links per Swears by newsletter.

I don't see it as a conflict of interest and I think that it's very clear from the threads which links earn money. There was that irritating time when all you had to do was type washing machine and an affiliate link would appear ( thank god that's gone). MN isn't free to operate and I've used it since 2006 without paying a penny and had so much support, fun and friendship. As long as it's clear about the affiliate links I'm happy. Hate all the adverts, mind. And obviously anyone could open an account and post for the purpose of getting recommendations for their goods we seem quite good at spotting them.

Well there are two different points there. The ASA are very clear on false advertising. And just because a site is helpful it doesn't mean it can ignore the regulations.

And the original post as it stood broke ASA rules. It should have stated it was sponsored if Hush paid them (and not just affiliate links) and it didn't.

But also it's not clear at all which sites are affiliated. All it says is some are. Well which? I mean I can take a few guesses.

And that's the point. Now I'm left wondering which ones are truly ad-free.

If I wanted some brand to target me through backhanded sponsorship there are a plethora of 'influencers' to choose from. The draw for me was that this was real women like me recommending stuff. But now I'm not so sure and I find reassurances that editorial content is not affected massively underwhelming.

Ime you can often tell what's a "product placement" post- I have never seen a genuine sounding rec for snag tights for example. But Hush is just chatted about like Boden used to be, and if they orchestrated that they did it really really well!

You shouldn't be able to just 'often tell'. It should be abundantly obvious.

Mumsnet themselves say they want to be transparent.

And now maybe innocent brands are being tainted by association. I've read some threads about snag. Now even if they are genuine they have that doubt over them that they could be planted ads.

There's always a risk of brands using anonymous boards for promotion. But mumsnet have muddied the waters by instigating financial ties with certain brands.

And yes, I agree, I come to MN for objective views on brands. The trust I had in bloggers has gone. This is a poor move, MN, as it means you may damage the trust your MNetters have on your own boards. Very short sighted.

I'm not sure I'd describe Hush as "out there" They do make some odd choices though, especially in the footwear department, a couple of seasons ago they were trying to sell possibly the worst trainers have ever seen. Baleniciaga Fluoro 90s nightmares, they may even have been a sock/trainer combo. (Surely whoever first designed those was ripping the piss. Perhaps it started off as an art project like the bear stitched out of turkey?)

I love their harems and sweats though and wear almost nothing else, (I'm one of the "scruffy" people dressed like an adult toddler most MNers snigger at )

I always thought hushitas threads were started by those marketing firms who pay people to go around posting online starting online 'buzz'.

Real people join in and then someone else starts a thread: "are hush clothes worth it?" Etc.

It works. Even I bought something hush this season: a practical (aka boring) long blue cardigan that breaks my usual rule only to buy 100% cashmere/ merino or lambswool, plus an overpriced smock but I was very tired at the time and wanted a new outfit, so whilst it is mega frumpy its new and actually looks good with a shaped leather jacket that gives me some waist.

Hush sizing is ridiculous. Massive.

Emperor's new clobber. There was such a hype about them on here (no where else have I ever heard of them) that I ordered a couple of things. Two cheaply made sack like dresses which went back and a tshirt which went to shit after one wash.
Bad luck maybe. But I was in John Lewis earlier and had a look. Some jumpers were already bobbled 😂
