Can you help with hyaluronic acid retinol product please?

I’m trying to over haul my skin care routine and can never find products that suit my skin. I’m late 30’s and I have combination skin and get dry around my eyes.

I’m currently using a tea tree face wash (due to the spots) and avene moisturiser. I take my make up off with botanical eye make up remover as only thing that doesn’t set my eczema off. Iv just the last few weeks started to use a soap and glory hot cloth cleanser and have seen a difference to how my skin looks, a bit less dull! So I was reading for your 30’s that I should use Hylarounic acid and a retinol product...

Can anyone help with products I should try and what sort of routine?? I’m really stuck and there are so many products. I’d rather not spend hundreds whilst trying them all out. Can anyone help?

The Ordinary is amazing. I’ve recently switched and it made a difference to my skin immediately- and is much cheaper. I follow the regimen for the early signs of ageing (or something like that). I’m early 40s.

How do I know what I need from the ordinary though? There’s so much? If I go to the counter I’m concerned they will just be selling stuff for the sake of it?

I use a La Roche Posay Hylarounic acid serum in the morning. It's got vitamin B5 in it too. My skin, which is acne prone, seems to really like it. It certainly speeds up skin healing. I put LRP's Effaclur Duo over the top, once the serum's sunk in.

I don't get on with retinol, so I can't recommend anything.

Blimey, I've just looked on The Ordinary site and I'm bewildered! Do they do recommendations for a particular skin type?

rachey hmm that might be worth a go for me as I bought that b5 one (is that the one you mean) after seeing it on here and have to say my skin seems to like that? Why do you use serum in the morning and not at night?

I need something that is good as a base for my make up too.

I use the serum in the morning because I look all crumpled! Grin

Actually, after I posted, I did wonder why I don't use it at night too. I don't know! I think I was introducing it to my skin gradually and have just forgotten to step it up. Maybe I'll try it tonight.

They have suggested regimes on their website, but also the products are so cheap you can try things. I Love The Ordinary!

Another recommendation for The Ordinary here. They have a regimen guide on the website - sorry, I can't get a clicky link up.

I am 38, and I'm using AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution a few times a week (I can't recommend this enough), the Squalane cleanser, Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5, and the Retinol 0.5% in Squalane.

My skin is a dozen times clearer and smoother.

@TwattingDog
I’ve considered using the AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution but I’m worried about it being harsh. Did you have any problems with it at the start?

@Dirtyjellycat no issues at all, it's been fantastic! I'll be dishing out at Christmas to all my friends 😂

Following as I'm also looking for a retinol anti ageing cream as I'm now 40. From my limited knowledge its best to start with a low amount of retinol as it can be harsh on skin to begin with and then build it up to a stronger one. There's so many though it's hard to know where to start

@Ilovechocolate01
Look at my link above. I use the regimen for the early signs of ageing. This includes granactive Retinoid 2% and it causes no irritation at all. I’d previously used a 0.5% retinol and I looked like I had 3rd degree sun burn. If you read the blurb it explains that the granactive Retinoid has the same benefits but without the irritation that retinol causes.

What's the difference between The Ordinary and Hylamide? Anyone know?

Report
GroggyLegs · 09/10/2019 16:10

Yep, I use the Ordinary granactive retinoid 5% and I love it. It's an oil rather than a cream so feels quite luxurious.
I'm going to get the hyaluronic acid next as I've been impressed with their products.

While we're recommending retinols, I also recommend the frezyderm SPF 30 that something be mentioned in here.
I forgot to put any on this morning & I can feel my face glowing Sad.

Yep. Burnt all the skin off my cheekbones. And I don’t burn easily.

The bottle says leave it on for x minutes (can’t remember if it says 5 or 10). I didn’t last that long.

Seriously, a very short application the first time. Then go from there. Now I can use it for 10 mins with no issues.

I burn very easily and all this burning talk worries me. My skin is very sensitive too....

I would literally apply it for 30 seconds and remove it. Trust me, you’ll feel the burn before it actually burns you - I did, but didn’t think it would be so bad, I left it on maybe two minutes and shouldn’t have!

It is so good but my skin had to get used to it

I think how your skin reacts to the AHA/BHA mask and retinol depends on whether you have built up a tolerance with other products. My skin had been used to Lactic Acid and glycol and Vit C so was fine with the full 10 mins.

I use the ordinary glycolic acid which I believe is gentle on skin, I also use the hyaluronic acid and the retinol 0.2% but I'm not keen on the greasy oil consistency of the retinol so plan to try something else with retinol when I've used it all up.

Report
SinkGirl · 09/10/2019 18:11

I was using the salcyclic Acid before I bought the peel so wasn’t expecting any burns! I’d just be super cautious. I use the glycolic toner now each night and have had no issues with that.

I use the ordinary hydraulic acid every day. They have guides on their website plus lots of people have done blogs and videos about their products. I have also tried their retinol and never really got on with it. I know people say it gets worse before it gets better but I never got to that stage despite trying for months.

LlamaofDrama · 09/10/2019 21:37

I've got an Ordinary retinoid, I went into the shop and was recommended to start with a retinoid and progress to retinol once my skin is used to it. Also not to start off using it daily. So I alternate the retinoid one night with the nip and fab extreme glycolic acid pads that I already had and my skin is very very happy. I was already using f50 SPF daily.

@Wonderingwhyme I am in my early 40s and get eczema under my eyes as well as breakouts on my chin & nose. I use LOreal rose cream cleanser for sensitive skin as it's has salicylic acid in it (for spots) but it's lovely and gentle and cooling. I use the superdrug Vit C booster to brighten my skin, followed by superdrug Calm skin 2 in 1 hydrating serum & moisturiser. It has hylauronic acid, niacinamide & chamomile. I pair it with superdrug simply pure hydrating serum as it contains three ceramides as well. The mix of the 2 gives you a good dupe for Cerave PM moisturiser. For the eyes I use Avene skin recovery cream or neutrogena hydroboost gel cream (Lidl I think have just released a dupe of it). In the evenings I switch the vit c booster for Avene Physiolift night balm which contains retinaldehyde. It's less irritable for the skin than retin A but it's a step closer for the skin to convert than retinol. Followed by the superdrug Calm skin moistening night mask. Hope this helps, and good luck :-)
