Can I ask about my hallway in here please..

We are currently doing the hall after 5 many long years of bare plaster, old flood marks, lots of gloss paint on walls etc and I need help. The prep on this has taken months.

We have a chair rail for some reason which is original. So can't get rid of it, as it's against my nature to destroy stuff like that. The picture rail is no more, which I am liking at the mo as high ceilings.

So, I am going to do the bottom in a raspberry colour and the top in white. Silk Paintwork in white.

Floorboards in hall and upstairs on landing, but my question is what sort of carpet to go on stairs. Dh has spent hours taking them back to wood, so only up the middle bit.

Spoke to bloke in carpet shop and wanted something that doesn't show dirt. We have a lot of dirt and I am not one for telling people to take their shoes off. He said get a patterned one. We have just taken out a fabulously fucking awful good quality carpet which was burgundy with gold & nave flower pattern on it, it did hide the dirt for 5 years though and I mean it, lots of building works etc, but it came up nice again and again.

I am thinking of having a grey carpet up the stairs.

Can you style queens please help me. What colour and what hides dirt.

Liking ggirl's stripey, are you going to get stair rods? I luuurve stair rods.

We have our stairs stripped back but DH refused to allow carpet anywhere near them, I would love carpet up the middle with stair rods.

Mrs Spoon are your stairs old as in Victorian Terrace old or reeeeeeely old. In the latter case, I wouldn't let you either.

I was so disheartened earlier by the thought of not finding a patterned carpet that I liked and although I am not modern in my home as such, I can't stand old people type carpets.

do NOT get a plain dark colour as they show every tiny piece of fluff and only look clean for 5 mins after you have vacuumed

we inherited a dark red one....sigh....cant afford to replace it...sigh

do not get cream or any other plain light colour. unless you are willing to sell your kids

what kind of wood are your floorboards? If they are pine or oak they will be kind of yellowy and may not look good with grey

UCM, Victorian semi. Have you looked in reclaimation yards (many have internet sites) for stair rods? Don't know if they would be any cheaper but might be worth a look.

The one of the left here combines grey and stripey.

Urrrrm love that Mrs Spoon but its not busy enough for foot traffic to die on it.

Hadn't thought about reclaimation yards, will look into that.
