Why is my hair all stiff after washing?

After I've washed my hair it's all stiff and crinkly like it has mousse on it, but there's no product on it whatsoever. I only use (Aussie) shampoo and conditioner, and I rinse it thoroughly.
We've moved house this year and it's only a recent problem, so could it be hardness or softness of water in the new house? The water feels really strange to me, sort of slippy and soapy.

Does anyone else have the same issue?

It might be a build up of silicone, try washing with head and shoulders or a clarifying shampoo.

You can look up the hardness/softness of your water on your water providers website. I learned this via my dishwasher instruction booklet!

I had this with Aussie shampoo. Made my hair feel crispy and straw like Sad

You could try a vinegar rinse.
Wash and condition as usual. Then put a good glug in a jug, top up with tepid water and rinse. The smell does not linger once dry.
This is especially good in hard water areas and it means you can stick with your normal washing products.

I second the silicone thing. I have given up silicone products completely. (It's surprisingly hard to find hair products that are genuinely free of them - despite the claims!) It went weird for a couple of weeks and is now the best it's ever been. Soft, smooth and GROWING!!!
I'm 46, btw.

I’ve had this too & found swapping shampoo/conditioner for a different brand once in a while seemed to help. Now have 3 brands that I like and rotate between them regularly.

I didn’t get on with Aussie shampoo, my hair didn’t feel clean after I’d washed it.
I use Pantene clarifying or elvive clay or tresemne and don’t have a problem with these.

Get a shampoo without parabens and silicone. All that crap builds up in your hair.

Silicone build-up. Basically it coats your hair and then the hair inside the coating dries up and goes crispy. Ditch the cones.

Use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner for a bit, and then a moisturising shampoo and conditioner. Can recommend Avalon Organic Lemon Shampoo and Conditioner for clarifying and Faith in Nature Coconut Shampoo and conditioner for moisturising

Thank you - I never even considered it was the shampoo because I rinse it out thoroughly. I'm so rubbish at this stuff.
Will get the clarifying type asap! Cheers Mumsnet.

I live in Australia, so I can’t guarantee that what I’m using is easily available or a similar price as it’s an Aussie-made product. It’s called Alchemy and I have been using their non-scented sls/paraben/silicon, etc -free range for ages. I really like it because it is effective but doesn’t weigh my hair down. It also comes in giant bottles as well as small ones, so once you know you like it, it lasts forever. They also have a lovely leave-in conditioner that I use as a heat protectant - I use about half a pea-sized amount through the ends while my hair is wet, the scent leaves Aveda for dead and it works brilliantly! (Will outlast me the way I’m going!) There are other products out there of course, but this is the one I keep coming back to.

I absolutely hated the Aussie shampoo. I threw out half a big bottle of it as it was ruining my hair.

FWIW Aussie was awful on my hair. It left if dry and crispy. I persevered due to the scent, but it was actually awful!

I bought some Waterstons shampoo, for my hair as it thinning and supposed to help hair growth,it has biotin in it, got it from Groupon on offer,it is sulphate free, and leaves my hair very soft and shiny, and i have bleach on it, ,
You can get conditioner too, but i just got the shampoo

My hair also felt crunchy after Aussie hair. Also, it does sound like you have soft water (which is great for hair washing as you only use a fraction of the amount of product that you would with hard water).

I went from Aussie to Pantene Micellar and the difference is amazing.

Can I also add that Aussie shampoo is from AMERICA! You can’t get it here.
