Thinking of buying this one- is it worth it? I'm trading in a Moncler for it.

Is North Face a decent brand?

I used to work in a shop that sold TNF so have a lot of it. I still have most of it years later washed and worn and still soldiering on so I would say Yes!

Yes they’re great, but there’s normally a 20% off deal towards Christmas so you might want to hold out.

Totally worth it. Mine is 5 years old now and still going strong.

Really good quality in my opinion, but negative connotations in certain areas. Particularly in black i.e gangs. Although I'm guessing you probably don't look much like someone in a gang. Or that people would mistake you for being in one so i say go for it.

Yes

Their background is in mountaineering, they can do “warm and dry”. From an outdoor enthusiast’s point of view, they are nit as good as they once were and have become very fashinsble, but they are still good. You could probably get a technically better jacket fir your money, but it would look more utilitarian.

Yes but also check out Rab, they do a similar jacket. I adore mine 🤗

I'm no expert but my hill-walking, mountain-climbing friends all rate North Face. They definitely have technical credentials, not just a fashion brand.

This one is now £136 from
John Lewis actually, I've just ordered! Hope it suits me :)

Fascinated by the mountain-climbing/street gang crossover appeal of North Face...

I know ha ha. It was helly Hanson years back. A sailing/gang crossover.

yes, 8 years on and my down filled jacket is still looking great. it's black and does get make-up rub off from neck and cheeks leaving an oily make up area but i wash it and tumble dry according to the instructions and its stayed perfect. not the most elegant item i own but so cosy and has a sporty vibe which is great as i live in skinny and trainer combos.

If you're up a mountain - technical brilliance. Sat on the chair-lift? Admiring glances. Around town? Chav. As others have said - weird crossover.

Yes, my thermoball jacket is the best thing in the world!

Chav???
It's a beautiful jacket OP, I tried it on last year, might just have to buy it at that price. Good find!

I hadn’t realised about the gang association but I had noticed it’s git more trendy these days.

I’ve worn their trainers for years and have a few fleeces that have stood the test of time.

Even my borderline ned ex (east end Glasgow) draws the line at North Face. Unfortunately it does have unpleasant connotations and associations as urban wear.

Report
Delatron · 15/11/2018 07:54

Are the thermoball ones waterproof?

itssquidstella · 15/11/2018 07:58

Thermosballs are water resistant but not waterproof.

I’ve lived in the middle of nowhere for the last 10 years; I had no idea that North Face is a gang favourite. This actually makes me want to wear my old North Face jacket next time I go to the city to see whether I get any funny looks 😬

North Face is a gang brand? Well at least they will keep warm and dry. DH always wears North Face, really good jackets.

Report
WildCherryBlossom · 15/11/2018 09:41

Gangs? I'm so out of date. I thought North Face was for slightly nerdy mountaineers. The aspirational warm & dry brand around here seems to be Snow Goose.
