Affordable non-shiny all day facial sunscreen?

moredoll · 12/06/2018 02:05

Atm I'm using Boots Soltan Once Face. It works, but even after 15 mins it's still shiny on me. I'm looking for something with good UVA and UVB protection so not Clinique Cityblock. I've read somewhere (possibly MN) that Biore Watery Essence has a high alcohol content so that's out as I have dry skin on my forehead. Does a matte all day sunscreen exist?

Boots do a factor 50 BB cream type thing? Can't check the pack atm as I'm in work sorry!

Ultrasound Face - once a day app. Good under makeup as a primer. I have used the spf 30 one - but also comes in tinted version so you can wear as make up.

I also use Soltan but I have the same problem with shine. Is there a cruelty free brand which is non shiny and gives 8 hours protection?

Sali Hughes did a column on this on Saturday. The comments are worth a read too www.theguardian.com/fashion/2018/jun/09/sali-hughes-best-non-greasy-sunscreen

I just use a day cream with spf in it rather than a specific sun protection for faces as I find them too thick. I use this one. Works for me all day in NZ sun

The body shop factor 50 one is cheapish, and non oily.

Laroche posay. I use the Hydraphase ultra uv moisturiser which has enough sunscreen in it to not need another sunscreen for everyday.
If I am intensively in the sun (skiing, or on the water) I use the Anthelios one for the face.

I really rate Alpha H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF50. It has broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection (I think the brand is Australian, and they take sun protection very seriously!). It looks thick and white when you dispense it, but sinks in with a nice matt finish.

Not sure it ticks the affordable box, though....if possible, buy from M&S when they have their 20% off offers.

Eucerin Sun Fluid Mattifying SPF50 is brilliant. It goes on well, doesn't leave a white film on the face and I swear it improves the condition of my skin. My pores appear smaller and I can apply make-up on top. You can buy it from Amazon or Boots for about £12.

La Roche Posay do three types. I find the 'dry' one the best.

I've recently started using frezyderm as it was recommended on here.
Its great as long as you let it set before you apply makeup. It leaves me with a velvety finish.

I used to use the Eucerin that Brazen mentioned above, it's not bad at all. I'm on the oily side though. I do use the Biore watery essence these days. How about Frezyderm, it's mentioned in the OP of the fantastic skincare thread, it's also on MN swears by quite recently. I believe some people do fine it can cause eye irritation though, if you have sensitive eyes. I do, which is why I've stuck with the Biore.

If I'm doing anything very outdoorsy or where I'll get wet or very sweaty, I use La Roche Posay Anthelios. It's pretty good, too. I don't like it for everyday use though, the Biore is just nicer, lighter.

Are you actually dry though, or just dehydrated? It's different. I always thought I was oily with dry patches... nope, combination with dehydrated skin. Now I've sorted out the dehydration, no more dry patches. And less oily too.

La Roche posay anthellios there's an ultra light spf 50 that I use. Sign up to La Roche emails - they regularly have 25% off deals and it's often on offer in Boots

Thanks for all the replies. So many choices!
The Boots BB cream sounds interesting as one of the reasons I'm asking is because I feel that I'm layering my skin with too many products, and the time that it takes. Cleanse, serum, let it absorb, moisturise, let it absorb, sunscreen. And on days when I have to look presentable that's followed by foundation, concealer and sometimes powder.
The Ultrasun Face once a day tinted might be the way to go for the same reason. I didn't realise they did a once a day one. Is it definitely non shiny?
Sali Hughes' column is brilliant.- I''ll have a look at the comments.
The Eucerin sounds interesting. The Replenishing night moisturiser with Urea they do is very effective when my skin is too dry.
I definitely want a dedicated sunscreen rather than a moisturiser with spf.
One of the reasons I think I'm dry rather than dehydrated is that anything with hyaluronic acid just doesn't work for me. (I tried the Ordinary's Hyaluronic acid and the Marine Hyaluronics and my skin got drier.)
The La Roche Posay Anthelios and the Body Shop facor 50 I have heard of and know they're highly recommend but I'd really prefer something that lasts all day.
The Frezyderm claims 6 hours protection, close to the 8 hours Soltan Once gives, so maybe that's the way to go. I'd love a Velvet Face! I can stretch to 20 quid-ish for sunscreen as without it everything else is kind of pointless, but the Alpha H is a little over budget.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

It does, doesn't it?!

Really there's no such thing as sunscreen which lasts all day, you do have to keep reapplying it.

'presentable' does not require being painted beige. I doubt the blokes round you worry about that.

please use real sunscreen and reapply regularly. If you rub makeup on top you are probably rubbing off the protection. Also no such thing as all day sunscreen, beauty product packs lie.

the facial sunscreens in the ickle cute pots are for those lurching from office to indoor restaurant on their heels, not for anyone spending time outside. Especially not at current high UV. Don't believe me - check what the dermatologists say.

I've never worn foundation so I don't know how the La Roche posay would feel with that on top. Can you give up foundation and use SPF50 instead? Your skin would probably even out naturally if you are protecting properly and you may find you don't need to use cover up stuff.

Biore Watery Essence. It's like you're not wearing anything on your skin.

Or wear a hat when you're outdoors. I don't spend much time in sunlight anyway as I hate it but if I am outside and wearing foundation I generally wear a hat.
