Any favourites or hates among the clothes or has the all black code made the occasion less interesting from this point of view? I loved Selma Hayek’s dress. Sophisticated and pretty at the same time.

Came on to say Salma’s dress was outstanding. Also liked Kate Middletons. Don’t usually rate her style, but I did think she looked beautiful. Can’t remember any others really, need to have another look!

I think it would have been more appropriate if the men had worn all purple - the colour of penitence.

Anyway the frocks. I'll go and have a look.

Sorry. It just pisses me off that, even for a symbolic act, it's the women who make all the effort while the men wear a poxy tie pin.

But on with the outfits. They did little to change my view that most women don't look that great in head to toe black. As soon as I'd clicked away from the page, I'd forgotten most of them.

Exceptions were:
I thought Isabelle Huppert looked very elegant.
I liked the shoulders and bodice of Lupita Nyongo's dress but not the whole thing.
I liked Ruth Wilsn's tuxedo, but not the shoes.
I thought Lesley Manville showed how a cold shoulder can look classy.
Loved Frances McDormand's print but not the dress.
And I thought Jennifer Lawrence looked stunning. As always.

I missed a bit of colour.

Naomie Harris looked great in her trousers and floaty tunic-style thing.

Great idea for the Oscars Floisme! I did like Joanna Lumely's Yedi inspired cloak-dress. Interesting and authoratitive?

Frances McDormand dress was weird.

@Sevendown I initially thought the print on her dress was tampons!

Is there an all black dress code for the oscars too?

Did Kate Middleton not get the black dress code memo? Her dress was green Confused

Royals not ‘allowed ‘ to wear black to events unless they’re in mourning. Notice the black ribbon handbag and shoes, which show her support. Also dark green is the colour of suffragettes. Quite clever I thought

Completely understand why Kate didn’t wear black. She went for as dark as she could with black accents, it’s not like she was wearing bright pink.

I don't think it's going to be all black for the Oscars.

Joanna Lumley needed her dress fitted at the waist. She did look good though and was a far better host that I thought she would be.

I liked Joanna Lumley's dress and how it was fairly unfitted about the midsection.

Gemma Arterton's dress was lovely - but only saw pics from the waist up. Lupita's dress was good.

Ah I didn’t know that, explains the green dress.

Whether or not the DoC is allowed to wear black (I'm sure I've seen her in black evening wear? Maybe not.), I imagine getting a last minute maternity gown is probably a tad tricky even for her! Those emeralds were completely the wrong green for that gorgeous dress though.

Loved Naomie Harris' outfit and was very jealous of Anya Taylor-Joy's D&G crown (I've been coveting one for years, although unsure when I might wear it, apart from in the bath, a la Princess Margaret perhaps) but WTAF was that thing Allison Janney was wearing?! Was also unconvinced about Joanna Lumley's dress - it looked like blanket material and didn't seem to fit.

I of course looked amazing on the night in my PJs and slipper socks.

*Stop saying it's because royals can't wear black unless in mourning, THAT IS NONSENSE!

Ffs. Kate did not wear black because royals can't make political statements. Which is what that dress code was and that is why she didn't wear black. She, and every other royal - including The Queen, have worn black on a shit ton of other engagements.

Ha yeah just googled “Kate Middleton in black” and there are a shit ton of pics of her in black dresses. So there you go.

I thought having a single colour dress code gave rise to much more imagination and flair - many more stunning dresses this time as there was a challenge to be risen to by the designers. I loved it.
