My hair gets unbearably greasy within less than 24 hours. It's super fine and we live in a very hard water area so I suspect a general build up of stuff. I have got some apple cider vinegar on the advice on a mnetter, but what do I actually do with it?! How do I use it most effectively? Before shampooing? After conditioning? Rinse off? Leave on? Leave on for a bit? Help!

I am too, im not sure linked to hormones, mine never used to be like this. Im trying by best to wash it less, use dry shampoo in between but it doesn't work

Yeah I went through a stage of eashing every other day but it didn't improve. And I simply can't go about with greasy hair. It's so fine that it just looks so obvious and rank. I have half a can of dry shampoo on just now to see me through until this evening and it just looks and feels awful! (I washed it at 6pm last night!) Maybe hormones. I'm 37 and have a whole load of grey hairs that weren't there a few months ago. (I had no greys then. On my head anyway Blush)

But still don't know what to do with this vinegar! Anyone?

With ACV I dilute it with water in a bowl and dunk hair in there until it's fully immersed and work it into the scalp. For a few minutes.

Then wrangle as much as the liquid out as possible, clip it up and wait a couple of hours before shampooing out.

Messy process! I found it to be a really good treatment, you'll have to see if it works for your hair.

@LanguidLobster thank you! And should I do it after shampooing? No conditioner?

Can you wash it every morning? I've washed mine twice in a day if necessary. Try pureology shampoo - expensive but good.

Clarifying shampoo?

Will look at that shampoo... can't wash it in the mornings - not enough time so always do it in the evening. I use a combo of shampoos, all detox or clarifying or chelating, all silicone free. Light conditioner on the ends only...

I think realistically you need to try and wash it in the morning. Sleeping and sweating into it for hours while you sleep won't help. You need to get it at maximum freshness for when you're actually awake / at work etc.

Honestly I really wish I could but mornings here with DS are kind of frantic as it is! If I could squeeze in 10 mins to wash my hair, I'd be going out with it wet! (Ok in summer, but not right now) it's why I've given up on make up too Grin When he's older and mote self sufficient for sure...

Save for a disaster or incapacity I've washed my hair every morning for 30 odd years. You just get up (even) earlier and DC have to be worked around if they are very little. I can't stand not having clean hair.

Ok well thanks for your help. I'm clearly slovenly and far less capable a human than some. Hmm If anyone has any practical solutions that avoid washing hair every single morning I would be grateful. For starters, aside from my glaring inability to adult properly, it's costing me a fortune in shampoo and I am not a wealthy person.

I have the same problem op and can't shower every day due to eczema.

@LanguidLobster what proportion water to vinegar?

I can shower every day but I'd rather find a way to avoid washing my hair every day, especially mornings. I get up at 5.45-6am ish. Getting up earlier when I am already up multiple times in the night is not an option if I want to stay sane. I already go to bed early at around 9pm. I have quite a bit of work to do at home in the mornings, answering emails, before I can leave the house. Self employment is a bugger.

You misunderstand. I'm not trying to claim to be a superior human, rather less so, I cannot mentally cope properly with the day unless I have clean hair.
At times in my life have washed it over a bath or sink if showering wasn't possible. Dry shampoo can be your friend, but it needs washing out well.

I had the same problem with my hair until someone recommended using clarifying shampoo. I use the clarifying shampoo by Redken once a week and can really notice the difference. Would be interested to see if the ACV does work for you though as I may give it a go when my current bottle runs out!

Lush do a 'hard' and 'soft' water shampoo. Not sure if they'd be worth a go (ask for a sample and tell them you have allergies or something so need to try before you buy). I read something yonks a go about taking supplements to help regulate male hormones which make greatness and spottiness worse. I'll see if I can find out more.

Baby shampoo seems to work with mine for some reason. The baby dove one. Also plaiting it on a night so it has a bit of volume, can always do a bit of a quif at the front if that still doesn’t look great

@GrannyGrissle I am definitely keen to try the Lush one. Shall don my gas mask and go in to find out more. Better skin is always a good'un, but I don't want to lessen my greatness Grin

I have very fine hair that used to get very greasy, if I washed it in the morning it was so greasy I'd have to do it again if I wanted to go out in the evening. I've now switched to Dr. Bronners liquid castile soap instead of shampoo. I wash my hair thoroughly with that once a week, and then run a little bit of ACV through mixed half and half with water, leave on for a few minutes whilst I finger comb my hair and then rinse with clean water. Then any time I have a shower in the week I get my hair wet and give my scalp a good scrub with my fingers to get rid of any dust or dirt. After 2-3 weeks of this my hair calmed down a lot. I only have problems if I go to bed with damp hair it looks a little greasy the next morning. You can use a natural bristle brush in addition as this distributes the natural oils away from your scalp and absorbs any excess, just give the brush a wash in warm soapy water after use so you don't put anything back in with your next brush.

I do an acv rinse once every week or 2. I fill a spray bottle with 1 part acv to 2 parts water and spray it all over my head, including putting the nozzle to my scalp and soaking the roots. Leave for 5 mins then rinse thoroughly.

I've also stopped using shampoo and co-wash with silicone and sulphate free conditioners.

I did a final wash with baby shampoo before starting to remove existing build up. My hair is transformed!
