Inverted bob

I have long blonde highlighted hair in good condition. Looks fab when I dry it all nicely and go out....which is once every other month! The rest of the time I scrap it up or it annoys me and looks lank. I used to have a bob so know it suits me ok and I think I would like to do it again. I just keep having visions of mushroom heads or 'mum bob' ( even though I am a mum)! Have linked a picture. Shall I do it? Please give me some success stories of going from long to short. Hoping I will feel more 'done' and have a hair style! 😬

I have just done this

Went from just on shoulders to the first pic aaaannnd

It's at least an inch too short! I wanted the second pic length

My hair is a bit wavy - with the shorter length it goes curly (but not nice curly) if I let it dry naturally, but if I blow dry normally it goes like a mushroom. Can't get it all in a pony either.

So my advice would be take it up in stages - try a longer version first and go from there

My hair grows quickly so not that worried plus I mostly wfh so can wear a hat to walk dog and do School drop off!

Ha ha!

Just read your OP - you wanted success stories! Sorry!

Go for it - but in stages!

I did the same just before Christmas. Had long hair that had just got too long and too hard to wrangle. Brought these two photos to the hairdresser. Like you I was worried about looking mumsy and I thought they were quite groovy.

I think your first choppy bob is really nice. With the other one you run the risk of getting tha back-of-the-head bobble that looks a bit Lego-y to me. You may have to specify if you don't want that big smooth crown (but maybe you do, it's just a matter of taste).

I hesitate to say the haircut wasn't a total success for me (long story) but I never regretted chopping it, in fact I went back in less than a week to ask for it to be shorter and then had it cut again a few weeks later. It's still too bulky (I think I really need it to be tapered around the neckline instead of blunt and choppy, which just makes it get very wide) but I'm afraid the next haircut will be wrong too and there won't be any more hair to work with. So maybe not a bad idea to also bring some photos of yourself in the bob you really liked so the hairdresser has an idea of what shape suits you.

Good luck!

Yep...I did it and it worked for me. Mine is quite like pic 1 but perhaps not quite as choppy.
My hair has thinned loads and long it just looks straggly whereas short it really thickens up. I do think this style works better on finer hair - thick hair does tend to go a bit mushroomy!

I went from long to a bob a year ago. It made me feel great. I looked more out together. I looked like I had a style. Then 2 haircuts later by the same hairdresser and he gave me a full on lego-head mullet (obviously I didn’t ask for this!!). I’ve been growing it out since and now it’s more of a lob and I need a cut but I’m too scared and don’t know who to trust.

So I do have an initial success story there but...

i disagree with the doing it in stages idea.

I love the drama of a big change. I regularly go short after having had long hair for three years. or so.

I like the picture but we all know that if your hair is frizzy or gets wet it will not look like that picture. but then if you have hair like me, it never looks sleek and smooth and straight no matter what I do with it

I went from the first picture to the second 6 months ago. I love it, it is shorter than your pics bit all I have had is everyone telling me how much younger I look! It took me months to pluck up the courage but then I thought it is only hair and I can grow it back. Please excuse the awful pics I hate having my photo taken.

Resting your hair looks great, you do look so much younger in the second one.**

I am trying to decide whether to go for the chop, I hate washing my hair but I seem to remember it's so much easier when shorter.**

I had also saved that first photo as an idea but would have it slightly longer.**

scrivette Thank you. I am so glad I did it, I used to have a really short crop in my 20's then grew it out in my 30's and kept it til last year (at the grand old age of 44) so glad I did it now.

If you don't like/struggle to do it now, having it shorter and in "a style" will not help.

I've had it like that, it was OK. I found it frustrating that it was in the way all the tine and I couldn't do much with it though.

I was also told I looked younger.

I'd say go for it. You might love it and if ypu don't, it's not a horrendous cut to grow out.

I'd also say if you go for, just go for it in one go.

I’ve been mulling this over for ages, too.

Resting, yours is fab. It’s taken years off you!

Love that, Resting!

OP, you either go for it ... or not. It’ll grow 😊. I liked your first shorter bob the best.

Do it! I recently had my cut from long to bob length (cut slightly higher at the back but not too drastic) and I love it.

Had loads of compliments too.

I feel more confident and definitely more presentable as I used to clip my hair back a lot and it’s thin. Not a good look at all.

Thanks for replies! I really hope I like it! Hoping it will make me sort it a bit more! What about exercise? Do you put a stretchy headband on? I can't remember doing much when I had it short before!

I'd had my curly hair very long for several years and fancied a change recently, so went for the chop. I really like it, and it is a million times easier to wash and dry. It's only hair, and will grow back if I get bored.

Love it! But.....I can't bloody style it like she did! Bought the same curling wand and everything 😣 I will keep trying.....but tonight I reverted to a round brush and had a slight "mom bob"! 😳
