Anyone else not like bootcut jeans?

Just that really? I keep reading that they are back and really flattering so I tried a pair of slim bootcut jeans. Good fit but the flappy bottom material looks weird and they make my (not very long) legs look short and dumpy. Is it just conditioning? I am small and fairly curvy, so I thought these would be made for me but apparently not ...

They need to be worn with heels.

YANBU I can't stand them and much prefer straight leg or skinny jeans Grin

Me! I only wear skinnies underneath ankle boots and with trainers, or rolled boyfriend jeans in the summer.

I liked them when they were last in fashion but just can't get on board now.

Can't decide if I'm just rejecting change...

OH god they’re awful. Frumpy. Unflattering. Skinny or straight all the way.

My vote is conditioning. I loved my bootcut jeans 15 years ago, resisted skinnies for as long as possible, and now I only own skinnies or straight leg jeans. I've heard bootcut works best with pear shapes (me) so I'm hoping I like them again.

I liked them in the 90s but have been wearing skinnies only for years now.

For me it's length, I'm short , so finding bootcuts that are perfect is impossible. Skinnies are less bother.

I think it's mostly what you're used to. I grew up with flares ('bell bottoms' followed by the appropriately named 'loons'). So in my head, they're still the default shape for jeans and even now, a narrow leg doesn't look quite right.

There are also different shapes. I can never remember what name goes with what but the type I like the least is the one that's very fitted on the thigh and then flares out lower down the leg. For me they're the worst of all worlds as you've still got the sausage skin look on the thigh plus the flappiness. My favourites were Gap Long and Lean which were more of a straight leg at the top so didn't draw the eye to the thigh at all. I've kept a pair although sadly they're a bit low waisted for me these days.

I really don't think skinnies are that flattering on a lot of us but we've just got so used to them that we don't notice any more. Give it ten years and we'll be wondering what the hell we were thinking. I do agree that they're far more practical in bad weather and even I'm wearing some today!

They only look good if they are cropped, I have a j brand pair, but Its nothing like old bootcut styles

I hate 'bootcut' jeans. They cover up boots as they can't be tucked in. And they have this way of making all boots look the same - like great leather shovels sticking out of the hem of your jeans.

I used to wear them, by the way, and took a long time to move into straights/skinnies. My skinnies will have to be surgically removed before I go back to bootcuts!

And anything that covers up my biker boots isn't worth the extra denim Grin.

I wore them back in the 90s/00s and I just think they're so dated now. I know they're supposed to be making a comeback but I can't see myself wearing them. Skinny jeans are a lot more flattering on me.

Is it just conditioning?

A lot of it is to do with conditioning. So many people have conditioned themselves into thinking skinnies are flattering on them when it's actually quite a difficult look to pull off successfully. If you'd suggested skinny jeans to people in 1994 they'd have stared at you open mouthed in horror.

I love bootcut jeans, but I agree, the new variety don't look the same as the original version.

I used to love them but now just find them odd and flappy, and I hardly ever wear heels during the day. Used to drive me mad that every time I went out in the rain I'd end up with wet legs and the water would just sleep up and up.

Skinnies all the way now and I don't care if they're out of fashion now!

They're just out of fashion. They were fine in the 90's/00's but somebody people haven't moved on as they like how they balance leg shape.

Estellanpip · 15/01/2018 16:19

They don't look good on anyone in my opinion. I don't see what's flattering about balancing the thinnest part of the leg, the ankle, with the widest part. They shorten the body aswell unless worn with a heel (which just looks dated).
I keep seeing a stylist known on Facebook for doing colours, wearing them but I think they look dreadful!

I loved Gap Long and Lean Flo, they were fab! I also don’t really like the look of skinny’s- make everyone except the very well proportioned look like either an ice cream cone or an egg on legs; but do like their dry leg qualities! Once everyone is wearing bootcuts, or widelegs, or whatever catches on, skinnies will look as dated as bootcuts looked the last few years.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 15/01/2018 16:25

I would never wear them I think they look very dated and frumpy. Sorry.

Straight leg and skinny for me

Are they not the same thing? I genuinely thought they were. As they're different, what are mom jeans?

This thread is making me feel old, I’ve realised there’s a whole generation of grown up women who have never worn boot cuts.

When I was young in the 80s straight legs were in, any trousers which had even a hint of a flare were beyond passé. Then Madchester and rave happened and flares, (anyone remember those massive wide leggged Joe Bloggs jeans?) came back in, suddenly straight legged looked old fashioned. After a few years of everyone wearing bootcuts skinnies suddenly looked really edgy and new, now they’re the default cut. I’ve seen a lot of fashionable youngsters in three quarter length wide legged trousers recently (which I thought looked odd at first, but I quite like now), I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the beginning of the end for skinnies.

The right bootcut can be flattering but as they need to be longer they are no good in the rain. Miles of soggy wet denim flapping around your ankle is not a good feeling let alone a good look. Had to get changed as soon as you walked through the door or you drag a whole load of amassed muck and leaves across your floor.

They're ok. Skinnies make my legs look like parsnips.

Report
PasDeDeux · 15/01/2018 16:51

Saskia Mom jeans are a more relaxed fit than skinnies, and they are rolled at the bottom and generally a more cropped finish. Not my cup of tea!
