How did you wear your hair in the '80s?

Just watching Top of the Pops 1985 and having fun looking at the audience and reminiscing.

I recognise so many of the hairstyles eg short at the back, big floppy quiff at the front, curly Liz McDonald perm, spiky on end with tons of gel, short with little tail I put into a plait when it grew, scruffy curls a la Madonna, crazy colour. All opposite to how I have worn it for years ie straight and highlighted. I'm boring now.

Anyone else who was alive in the 80s, do you remember how you wore your hair?

Very short at the sides, long and straggly layers at the back and on the top, with a long fringe. All heavily crimped and back combed and occasionally dyed black and purple. I always smelt of slightly singed Bristows hairspray. Until 1988, then I had a big spiral perm, which wasn't much of an improvement.

Very long and very permed. God I miss my hair

Bananarama all the way. Lots of backcombing and a piece of material tied in it.

My hair was crunchy with hair spray through the whole decade. And massive with perm/ backcombing/ occasional glittery gel 😲

I had a pudding bowl. Things improved a bit when I left infant school

Yeah, I had the short hair and the tiny little bit left long which i plaited. How weird in himdsight, that was early to mid eighties as a mid teen.

By the end of thr eighties I had big hair. My daughter looked at a pic of me the other day and said "that's what I look like in the morning!, except you did it on purpose" yes thanks darling.

Oh yes the backcombing. I had it down to a fine art. Backcomb, hairspray, backcomb, hairspray. It worked though!

Shaved at the sides. Home perm. Lovely!

Like Ribert Smiths, then very short. End of the 80's a short bob like Louise Brookes, though it was a photo of Corrine from Swing Out Sister on the cover of The Face that inspired me to grow it.

Long and straight and highlighted.

I tried to make it full and spiky with gel and moose, but it didn't work.

Usually pigtails or a ponytail and some hair slides.

I was 5

I was 10 when the 80’s ended but I remember having the following styles:

Crimped by my mum putting it in lots of plaits which I would sleep in over night. Until I got an actual crimper which revolutionised my life!

A heavy very straight fringe that my mum would cut by putting a piece of sellotape across it as a guide.

A side pony tail. I rocked this look so often that my childhood nick name was squirrel.

A high pony tail with lots of fluorescent coloured bobbles all put on one after another so that my hair was encased in a kind of tube Confused

And then home perms from about age 8 Blush

Yes the home perm was a bit hit and miss wasn’t it.

Spiral perned and then reverse French plaited. So you ended up with a sort of fountain of curls at the top of your head. All held in place with a tortoiseshell butterfly clip.

Short back and sides with a permed Brillo pad on top.

Many many ways.
The Phil Oakey.(had my hair cut sat next to him)
Crystal Tipps home perm.
The messy ragamuffin back combed hair sprayed mess.
The bowl cut. I walked in the pub after the cut and everyone started singing Blackadder.
The mullety thing, with spicy fringe.
And finally the Annie Lennox.

I had a sort of mullet thing in the mid eighties; by the end of the eighties I'd learned to let it do its own thing.

Long, ringlet perm. Sad thing is, my DH still has a photo of me at that time (1988) in his wallet.
When I see the image I can hardly believe that pouting, confident creature was me.

At school (early 80s) my hair was long and wavy (natural wave)
Left school had it cut into a boring bob then had it cropped at the sides except the tiny long plait section ( snap Bluntness Grin ), longer at the fringe and dyed black. Kind of Phil Oakey/Him from the Thompson Twins hybrid.
I had the razor cheekbones and size 8 body back then

Anyone remember the Monty Don earrings -stud+pear shaped drop with a little bow at the join?

I had an arch shaved in the back for a while Grin

I was watching a 1981 TOTP the other day with DD22 who found it weird that everyone in the audience had short hair.

Anyway, I had various styles but vividly remember going to a disco (where now dh was playing in a band Grin), and my hairdresser doing several tiny little Adam Ant plaits in the fringe of my short hair!
