Shampoo bars

Does anyone use shampoo bars? I've very happily moved from shower gel to bar soap, and am pondering the next step to shampoo bars for my hair (which will also, hopefully, help me continue to reduce plastics this year). I'm especially interested in SLS and paraben free options.

Any recommendations?

I have just started using shampoo bars (from Lush) after reading a recent thread. They are brilliant. I got one for Xmas & used it every day (also my DP) and hardly any change in size. I get a good lather and my hair is sooo soft. I will say that you need to let them dry a bit before putting them back in the tin as they tend to stick a bit if there still wet. Also I find the square tins easier to store them than the round tins. I can't remember the names of the two I have but one is pinky red with whiteish bits and the other is bright blue with dark blue bits. They both smell divine.

I like the lush ones but they contain SLS. So am following this thread with interest thanks.

What's SLS glitter?

CaptainW SLS is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - it's used in loads of toiletries (incl toothpaste) - I think it's what creates the lather. There is some scientific evidence that it is related to contact dermititis. It's also quite bad environmentally (toxic to fish, the manufacturing processes are highly pollutant). I think there are lots of other reasons to avoid it (but can't quite remember them all!)

Pro: they last for ages and lather well
Con: they've got sulphates in and thus strip the colour from coloured hair (much like Head and Shoulders does).

The coconut one is quite moisturising though. I use that!

I use them and so does the rest of my family. I tend to used proper shampoo once a week. I’ve got three kids and we seemed to be going through bottles and bottles of shampoo and I was stressing about all the plastic. The bars last ages and are so easy to use.

I use quite a few products from lush but I found the shampoo bar too drying. Maybe I need to try a different one.
@duvetday If you cut a small strip of ribbon or fabric and put it under the bar it stops it sticking to the tin.

Leave some overhanging so you can lift out if that makes sense

Lush shampoo bars tend to strip the hell out of my coloured hair. i always laugh when they see me and ask me to take one and try. They do the exact opposite!

I have the avocado one from lush I got it for xmas. It smells incredible!! I feel like when I'm washing that it's not getting my hair clean as it doesn't lather up all that much and I have long and thick hair so it's hard to tell you have soaped everywhere up, but it always comes up nice when I blow dry so it's clearly doing the job.

When I use them I keep them in one of those little net bags you used to get in washing powder to put the tablets in. It lets them dry out.

I use the Lush ones - I love them. Coppernob and the honey one are the best.

I am put off Lush bars because of the SLS. I have come across these ones online but haven't tried - they could be worth look but are pricey

I had a Tigi shampoo bar called Rockaholic which was really good and no SLS but annoyingly it's now discontinued

Ive been using shampoo bars for 2 1/2 years, I get mine from spirit of the isle (online) or funky soap company (online), both places are handmade, beautiful bars with no SLS. Both are available on eBay, have their own website and funky soap is also on etsy.

Takes about 6-8 weeks for your hair to settle down, rinse your hair with a vinegar rinse, I use either malt or Apple cider vinegar in a spray bottle watered down 1/2 water, 1/2 Vin, wash your hair with shampoo bar, rinse with water, then spray with vinegar leave for a min then wash out, this helps as your hair and scalp like to be slightly acidic. You could use coconut oil as a conditoner, but if your hair is greasy, use on the last few inches

Haven't used this shampoo bar, but the soaps and shower gels from this company are really lovely...plan to give it a try. Like others, I want to reduce use of plastics.

I use the lush one on holiday as it is one less liquid to carry through the airport! However I find it dries my hair out and I definitely need to use a conditioner with it. Lush don't do a conditioner bar, I wonder if these exist?

Lush do a combined shampoo and conditioner bar - I can't remember what it's called though.

I use the honey one and it doesn't seem to strip my colour.

I’ve been using a shampoo bar from funky soap since before Christmas, inspired by a thread on here.

It’s working well for me - not anything magical compared to my usual sls free shampoo, but it’s probably just as good if I do an apple vinegar rinse afterwards. I like that it’s got no plastic packaging and will last basically forever!

I’ve got dry, curly hair and I only really wash my hair properly once a week and then just refresh with conditioner and water every couple of days in between. I also bought the solid conditioner bar, which has taken more getting used to but I like too - but I do still use my usual conditioner as a leave in after each wash.

Lush don't do a conditioner bar, I wonder if these exist? yes they do, Lush have quite a few now.just bought a daddy o one but haven't tried it yet
