Elf cosmetics are cheap and great. The brushes are $1 each and fab.

Drugstore stuff is somewhat affordable. Maybeline do a fab long wear lipstick which is the same as the lipsense only $12 not $25-30. NYX and wetnWild is cheap and fab too.

Depends...age, complexion, taste, budget, etc. US teeth whitening products are pretty good! Maybelline/Elf/Harmon's is good for bargains, or check out Sephora for higher end stuff and the latest/greatest. Some great deals to be had on hair products too.

Thanks both! I was thinking of sephora, but I know I'll get overwhelmed with choice hence wanting a bit of a plan on what to get. Teeth whitening products are a good tip.

Milk makeup you can get it from Sephora. Quality is good, cruelty free the highlighter and blush is excellent.

When you go into Sephora, either ask or look ahead of time for the WOW deal of the week. Think it changes on Thursdays. I managed to get the urban decay smokey eye palette for $27 rather than $54 as it was the WOW deal. Everything is cheaper make up wise. Duane Reade sell NYX cosmetics which are cheaper than here.

Hi Polly, if you do go to Sephora, the assistants are super helpful. If you tell them a bit about your friend's style, they should be able to help you find something she'd like.

Duane Read in Manhattan is $$$$. Even if you can get to Target you will save a lot of money. Go lunchtime on Friday or Saturday morning as that is when they have most on their shelves. It's slim pickings at Target on Sundays.

I like all the drugstore brands, amazing ranges. American brands are usually cheaper, stuff like marc jacobs. Sephora own brand is good as others have said.
