Best lip balms/ salves? Help.

I always have dry lips. In the winter they are awful. I'm applying balm every few minutes and after drinking etc. I cover my lips with it at bedtime. They aren't cracked, but they are dry and I do have a habit of pulling off the hard, dry skin, which clearly doesn't help healing.

I've used Carmex (stick and pots), Nivea, Lypsil, and always wear lipstick , a non drying sort. I've tried experimenting to see if it's the lipsticks (currently using Bobbi Brown Luxe one or their Nourishing one) and makes no difference at all, even using lip balm under them.

Lush do vegan lip balms that are mostly Shea butter. I like the Rose Lollipop one, but I've tried Honey Trap too. They've massively improved my lips, and I don't have to apply it often.

I think that you are applying it too much, you can get rebound dryness. I would exfoliate all the loose skin off with a warm damp flannel and when dry, apply Carmex once or twice per day maximum, no more. I did this and it worked for me.

I honestly believe that the Dr Organics lip balms from Holland and Barrett are magic! Can't recommend them highly enough.

Avoid anything that makes your lips tingle as this means that they have irritating ingredients. Carmex and Blistex both include camphor, which is not something you want near your mouth! Anything shea or cocoa butter based is good.

The Body Shop hemp lipbalm is the best thing I've ever found for winter lips.

Burt's bee's ones are lovely and currently working for me. The pomegranate one is slightly tinted too.

Carmex has an exfoliant in it so avoid as your lips will keep on peeling.

Nuxe do a lovely honey-based one in a little pot - lasts for ages and very good

Another vote for Burt's Bees lip balm here - the peppermint one is lovely.

Blistex intensive moisturiser is also wonderful for winter lips

I made my own and I found it really good. I read a few articles about how companies add lots of crap to lip balms and some of the ingredients actually dry skin. I also have branded balms in my bag as well just for quickness. I like lip medex for really dry lips and carmex is good as well.

I bought little empty pots from eBay.

I melted the following in the microwave and just decanted into the little pots. It lasts ages as well.

beeswax
shea butter
coconut oil

I'm in the same state OP. One side of my top lip is so dry it feels crunchy, if that makes sense. I bought Carmex two days ago and I think its improved it a tiny bit. I do have a massive jar of coconut oil in the kitchen, so I think I'm going to try that today.

When my lips get really scabby I use Blistex. It’s the one in a little metal white and blue tube with a red cap. Only £2-£3 quid from a supermarket or pharmacy. It’s good stuff.

Day to day I use lanolips from boots which is a bit pricier but lovely. If you have any nipple cream laying about give that a go as it’s got lanolin in so it’s pretty much the same thing.

Also I resort to drinking water like I’m trying to store it and that does help somewhat.

I too would say you are using lip balm too much. I had this issue and it is annoying when they are dry and chapped. Try using your face moisteriser at bedtime and limit how many times a day you apply balm. I use Vaseline aloe in the little tins. I also love Carmex.

I have used-
Lanolips
Burts Bees Honey and Pomegranate
Ren - in a tube
L'Occitaine (might be shea butter) in a tube

Vaseline is mineral oil and not supposed to be good.

I can't NOT use anything over the day because my lips feel so dry. Whatever I am using seems to stay on the top not sink in, if that makes sense.

Have you tried some moisturisers for lips, not balms?

Clinique have one, but I'm sure other companies do them too.

Palmers cocoa butter stick one is good. I find a lot do nothing for me. I like the tingly blistex one as well

Polly - I'm like you. I've tried those brands that are famous and that others swear by, and they don't work that well for me.

The best I've found is Melvita Apicosma Repairing Lip Balm. It's lovely and actually goes straight in and deals with the issue on one or two applications.

I suffer terribly with dry lips.

I pick too which annoys (sooths) me.

I've found vaseline (basic tub) overnight and the nivea rose lip salve during the day.

Molton brown lip saver is the only thing that doesn't make mine worse have used it for about 10 years now

Eucerin Aquaphor is brilliant. My DS gets terrible chapping & this sorts him right out
