Nativity costume help please- getting the rainbow bird/ Phoenix/ Firebird

DD 6 is going to be a bird in the Nativity play. I have 2 weeks to make/ get her a costume in design like the grey/ brown one from Ikea here that only costs £10.

This would be simple except that the brief is "very colourful " and DD wants rainbow colours or lots of pink (but doesn't want to be a flamingo). So possibly am looking something like the other options.

She is supposed to wear black tee and leggings underneath.

This sort of thing looks to be around £50-60 on ebay (I think this is quite a lot for a 2 performances of a Nativity play, not sure how much it would get used or worn after that) or alternatively a bit complicated to make.

Does anyone have any ideas? I wondered about buying the Ikea one and painting it, but I am not sure how well the paint will take on black, grey or brown.

Maybe a thicker acrylic type paint would cover on the Ikea one nicely? Or buy the Ikea one as a base and glue colourful feathers over it? (Hot glue maybe).

If you were going about it totally DIY I would suggest maybe making a plain cape in black and then sewing/gluing felt in rainbow colours for the feathers :) good luck!

These look fun, like tutus for your arms, but I am not sure how hard they would be to make.

Some material like this I imagine, sort of folded where you would sew it and built up with different colours to make a a scrunchy effect?

The easiest way is probably to copy the general Ikea idea - make a poncho shape from black curtain lining or similar and cover with feather shapes (elongated leaf shapes) made from brightly coloured fabric. Or make half a poncho shape (a cape) with elastic loops to go round the wrists and safety-pin it or stitch it to the t-shirt at the back of the neck.

If IKEA is near you I agree with buying it as a base and sequins or feathers.

The arm tutus look as if they're different widths of coloured net all gathered onto an elastic cuff. Quite easy to make but maybe not as comfortable to wear?

We have an Ikea 40mins away but the poncho in my 1st link is sold out there but available on line.

So I might liaise with school on Monday if there are any other parents-of-birds who might want to order a few of these from Ikea to customise, then we could share postage and ideas I guess, if not £7.50 isn't the end of the world.

Amazon has this. Could the tutu be worn as a cape? GIZZY® Girls Rainbow Fairy 3 Piece Set. Wings, Wand & Tutu. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074JC7K7Y/ref=cmswwrcpptai_6NzeAb8TMHVC0
