Would like to treat myself to this dress but not until I know WHAT SHOES!!??

I have a few bits and bobs coming up, an evening wedding, a couple of Xmas parties. Also quite like the idea of making a bit more of an effort on Xmas day itself.

I love this dress, I know it's very simple but it's absolutely my style. I've seen it in the shop now and it's MUCH nicer in 'person', as it were. Not cheap but it looks beautiful.

However I won't buy it unless I have footwear sorted. It's a big purchase and I need to know I will get wear out of it and I won't get that wear unless I have the right shoes!

The ugly clumpy sandals in the picture are all wrong, I think. But obviously for a party it might need a sandal (sparkly?) Could I dress it down for a daytime event with ankle boots, or would that 'kill' the velvet vibe? And are sandals the only evening footwear that would work with it, do you think? Glam courts, otherwise? Something satin-y and pointy-toed, with a high heel?

I'm crap crap crap at getting shoes right and can't splash out £150 on a dress without being sure it's a goer!

Advice hugely appreciated (even if you hate the dress, I know it's not to everyone's taste but it's less monastic in the flesh, I promise!)

I'd have to look for a cheaper shoe, though, to budget for the dress. Mind you, these are a bargain (VERY gold, though...)

I think it could be dressed down with boots.

For the evening, perhaps metallic clunky shoes? It's such a minimalist dress that I can't see it working with delicate satin courts. Maybe sth like the pic if you don't fancy sandals in winter.

God they would be PERFECT. You are a genius. Enough fooot on show to look fun and party-ish but not too much. Not at all sure velvet works with sandals (winter fabric, lightweight shoe) but these closed-toes are lovely.

Have you tried it on the reviews aren't great. I like the shoes the dress is styled with.

Zara yep tried it on (in a bit of a rush as had to dash) and fit worked for me. I'm very straight up-and-down, maybe that helped? NOt sure it's at all cut for curves.

Mind you one of the reviews mentioned Sandro which I love (beyond my budget now though) so might have sneaky peek there.

Thanks Bloomed - it's a v v dark navy (looks black in pic) so would you think maybe black boots? I only have brown ankle boots (no idea why) so would probably have to wait until sales crop up to find a black heeled boot.

I would go sock boot/ankle boot possibly in a dark red. If you want a bit of bling topshop have these gold boots

I love those gold boots... not sure I can quite pull them off but I love them.

Dark red a nice idea for a boot, I'd have to make sure it worked with otehr things I own, but it would be lovely with that navy.

I like Velvet right now. The dress is quite plain but it could look fab with the right accessories. I would get it taken up to above the knee and wear something like these with it

The power of S&B! Now I look at it again I can see that it absolutley would only work with a clumpy/chunky shoe. Still don't like the sandals in the pic but it def needs to be a clumpy shoe, not a delicate court.

Gold or dark red boots would be great as PPs suggested. If I were you I'd play with textures, so satin heels maybe even satin boots etc. Sock boots so they cling to your ankle would be flattering.

Ah so sock boots are the kind that cling to your ankle... I like those (have pathetically skinny ankles so need minimal risk of gaping) so will have a look around.

The dress would definitely work with ankle boots and dark brown will be fine till you find ones you love. I'd wear either navy or black boots with it. As far as party shoes go I only wear flats and think Rogue Matilda do great party flats.

I love jaquard actually and think the pattern would be gorgeous with the plain velvet.

Heel height may not be quite right... that said, I do need something I can stand in!!

They're really lovely and have given me inspiration - patterned satiny boots may be the perfect solution.

CountFosco wow I've never heard of/seen Rogue Matilda before - they're amazing!! I do need a heel, I think, my legs look like toothpicks in flat shoes (unless disguised by boots) but those are stunning nonetheless. Decent prices too.
