Can I dye my own hair if it has bleach on the ends?

I’m trying to save money I’m booked in for a cut and blow dry tomorrow. I’ve had bleach on the ends and a mid brown over the whole thing. For winter I want in a darker brown my hairdresser friend always said the dyes are exactly the same so,can we do it myself? Or shall I fork out £130? (London)

You can do it yourself, it won't go green or anything, but the bleached roots will end up a lighter shade than the rest of your hair that's all.

If you wanted the one darker brown shade all over your hair then you'll need to get it down professionally as they'll need to use different colours on the different parts to get it right.

If you dye it yourself the dye will be lighter on the parts of your hair which have been bleached, so you'll have a few different colours in there. If you used a warm-toned brown you could have a gingery colour on the ends, if you used a cool-toned brown you may end up with greeny-blue ends.

I was a bit of a twat and bought an ashy-cool toner and left it on for 15 minutes after a root stretch that had faded and ended up with purple-green coloured bits, so had to use a warm brown semi-permanent over the top to warm it up. Fortunately it worked but God alone knows how. Not sure I'd risk it a second time.

I’ve just realised it’s one that lasts for 28 washes so perhaps that’s safer? I can always go shorter tomorrow if it’s a nightmare.

I've never had any of my hair go blue, green or ginger. I am naturally a mid to dark brown and have very long hair. I used to bleach it a very light blonde. I started growing out the blonde and now dye my hair a dark red.

When I first dye it the ends which were blonde, are only slightly lighter than the darker tops of my hair but it washes out more from the ends over time. however I don't ever end up with a distinct line across my hair or anything.

I'd give it a go, as you say you can always go shorter tomorrow if need be. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.
