Please talk to me about highlights/lowlights/foils?

I am mid sixties and dye my hair medium brown to hide grey and think I maybe need to think about making it less flat.

The one and only time I had anything like that done was in 70's when it was called streaks and done with a crochet hook through a swim cap type thing and hurt like hell.

I have heard of half head/whole head/caramel streaks/blonde streaks etc. What should I be looking for at my age, don't want to look silly.

Hallo. I am 59, do not have much grey at all, the odd hair here and there, but do have highlights.
I have 2 colours, both of which are present in my normal hair.
My hairdresser alternates the highlights between the 2 colours, picks the section of hair and then weaves the end of the comb through before applying colour and wrapping in foil. I end up looking like a weird Christmas decoration!
The result, however, is fantastic. Does not look coloured at all. I should add that I have short hair. The point is that there are no noticeable "chunks" of colour.

I am 61 and very grey, I have highlights in two colours like gin. Colours are copper and a caramel blonde which are done alternatively. I love it, looks natural with no harsh 'growing out' lines.

I also remember the swim cap thing - was horrible!

Thank you, is this something that needs doing regularly to look good. I am not great at going on a regular basis but would do if I loved it.

I assume if I wanted to stop it for any reason I could just colour over the whole head and they would be gone?

I've had my hair highlighted twice in the past 3 years, and I love it!

(I would get it done more regularly but I never get around to it - it doesn't matter though, it just blends into my normal hair colour (nothing dramatic).

Highlights can be (and often are) very subtle (to the point at which it's difficult to tell that you've had them done) - but they certainly gave my hair a little more 'depth'. - just ask your hairdresser

I have booked in to have half head of foils but a full head is only £10 more which is a better deal. Which would look best do you think?

I have 3 different colour highlights - I've done it so long I. I longer remember what my real hair colour is! I love it - it looks loads better than having one flat colour. I usually have a half head for the sake of economy and because I have so much hair it takes a long time - it does mean underneath it's quite dark (though I get them to do the hairline at the back for when I wear my hair up - I have long hair). I think if it's economic then a whole head is better. In between my half head highlights I sometimes have a T section which just tops up the roots (which aren't that pronounced). When you top it up you only need the roots done really as the ends stay coloured. Ask your hairdresser what they'd advise.

I tend to do mine once every three to four months - not sure really - just when I think it needs it.

Thank you, Holly and Whyarethebest ! I'm the same Garlic - I only have half a head due to the length of time it takes - and that still takes at least a couple of hours!

Thank you all, maybe I will stay with the half head for the first time and see how it looks although for an extra £10 for the whole lot it seems a good deal lol.
