Head shave to go grey

Has anyone gone down the buzz cut route in order to transition to grey?

I am seriously considering it and just bunging a hat on rather than go through another disappointing processing episode and putting off the inevitable or dyeing over it when it turns a weird shade.

I am absolutely comfortable being grey.

So has anyone bitten the bullet and if so how was it?

I went from below shoulder length to very short pixie to grow out the grey. I wanted to shave it all but my hairdresser talked me out of it. Admittedly it was a number 3 on the back and sides but longer on top and blended very well.

I'm glad she talked me out of it really, growing out a short pixie only took very few months I don't think I could have coped with having to wait even longer for a completely shaved look to grow through.

THete is a poster on here who did this and now her hair looks fab, I remember the pics. She is very pretty and a make up artist if I remember rightly though, so she carried it off well (not that you wouldn’t op, go for it!) hopefully that poster will come along soon...

I had a buzz cut in my 20s for z long time. Suited me and was easy to go myself. I feel like my face isn't delicate enough now. But a buzz cut is harder to pull off even then a flat top. It's really just your head.
You'll need make up. Hat on top of a buzz cut can be tricky. It needs to fit and without hair your head is smaller.. how about hat on top of hair while you grow roots out. Then v short pixie.

I was tempted a few months ago but got talked out of it.

I had a very short cut instead (it was already quite short). I hated it - it looked so severe. The red is almost out of my hair now through fading and the next cut will lose it completely. I am now very comfortable with it and am considering new styles.

I have bitten the bullet. I can crochet so have made hats to fit and have a variety of headscarves. I have short hair anyway because the hair dye trashes my hair so not such a big change.

A couple of months and it will be a crop. Feeling relieved to have got rid of the dye and excited to see my natural colour. My DH supportive too so very helpful. I have been dyeing my hair weekly to keep on top of the badger- it was getting ridiculous and scary given the latest cancer/hair dye recommendations. Happy to update if anyone else is vaguely interested! 🙂

Thank-you. It is very grey but more so around the front and the light is throwing it off. Will whip my head scarf off and try for better light. Also the longer it gets the more apparent the grey will be. Here-

Will update in a month with thoughts about he experience and photo for anyone with an interest. I got inspired by a poster on YouTube called ‘naturally grayceful’ who was honest about the positives and negatives.
I personally would have liked to have seen more but she stopped posting after a month with just a photo update months later but she hasn’t redyed
Anyway off to make more hats for variety 👍🏻and I have a feeling earrings will be a ‘thing’ for a bit too 😁

I did this exact same thing 6 weeks ago and I love my grey buzz cut. My DH actually buzzed it for me and it was great seeing the white/grey hair reveal itself. My hair is nearly at a very short crop stage now and is a myriad of whites/grey and silver and i love it.
Prior to this my hair was in horrendous condition from over processing and bleaching, its now soft and healthy (albeit short).

I dyed my hair brown for years
Got properly fed up last year
The hairdresser bleached the colour out and put a toner on
It worked great - but took 4.5 hours 😁
I love it
Looks great and I get lots of compliments on it

Era that is very encouraging to hear and if you felt able I would love to see a photo of your hair progress. My hair feels so soft too- even this short which just goes to show what shocking condition it was in. Am getting quietly excited and looking at style ideas re grey hair etc.

Can’t wait to see it. By New Year it will be over an inch long which is a nice thought 🙂

mrsr is it all natural now? Have you found you have had to adapt make-up clothing to make the best of your new colouring?

It's all natural yes but I do have a toner put on every 8 weeks

It's not altered my colour choices at all tbh

I still wear mostly navy, black, white and grey 😁

I did the same two years ago and now it's chin length.
I love it, it's soft and shiny and actually has several shades of colour naturally in it.
I follow GGG going grey guide on Facebook, lots of support from women at different stages on going grey.

Squashit So this is my hair 6 weeks post buzz. It was originally buzzed at a No3. There's no real shape to it yet but I'm waiting for it to get some extra length to get it styled/shaped. You can't really tell but there is a strong white streak throughout the front.

Thank-you so much Era that looks so nice and is very encouraging especially as I am having a ‘have I done the right thing’ day. Your colouring is really lovely and so striking. I hope mine looks similar 🙂 You have got a lot of length already!

I buzzed mine to a number 4.On the plus side getting ready is much quicker. I am oscillating between thinking it looks hideous on me to feeling relieved not to be on the dye treadmill and working with what is natural. I knew before I did this it would be an emotional rollercoaster and am going with it.

A friend of mine has taken to wearing a wig when going out to cover her very thin hair, it looks great and have to say I was tempted to whip it all off and do that for the winter myself to grow my grey out. I don't think I'm quite ready yet, though.

(Although I would LOVE to get my hair this lilac/grey that is so 'in' at the moment, and they tell me I can't have it because there's too much red dye in it, so maybe I should just go for it ...)

Whitney If you do cut your hair short, down to grey, then you can use purple shampoo to get a lilac tint in it. Just leave the purple shampoo in for 30 minutes. The Fudge one works best for this.
