I'm nearly 50, size 8, 5'7. My legs are slim. But Would I look shit? Are they a fashion disaster? I was thinking they might look ok in black with a nice top and heeels for Xmas dos? Am I deluded?
Need some honest fashion advice please!!
I don't want everyone to point and laugh. shock grin

I really like them, but I think everything else has to be a bit more plain, or atleast very lightly patterned.

Not crushed velvet though..

abbsisspartacus Fri 20-Oct-17 21:38:21

I wore them when I was a teen I wouldn't now but I might if I was a size 8

MagicFajita Fri 20-Oct-17 21:42:34

To me they are a bit "teen goth" and I saw them a lot in the 90s teamed with a choker and DM boots.

If you like them though , please don't worry about what anyone else thinks! I'm pretty sure my 50s vintage style isn't for everyone.

Wear what you love op.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts Fri 20-Oct-17 21:50:28

Teen Goth 😱. That's my worry. That I'd look like I was in fancy dress 😀. I'm just trying to think of something different to wear on my bottom glad other than skinny jeans. That might look a bit glam. Not that I'm the slightest bit glam at all.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts Fri 20-Oct-17 21:51:06

Bottom glad?? 😀 half doh

Hellywelly10 Fri 20-Oct-17 21:57:19

Depends what you wear them with. The rest of your outfit has to be very current. Otherwise you could look like you have owned them since the 90's!

Hellywelly10 Fri 20-Oct-17 21:57:39

Could look amazing

ImADingleDangleScarecrow Fri 20-Oct-17 22:44:09

I wore them in the 90s so wouldn’t wear them now. Though nor do I have the figure I had in the 90s. What type of style top would you plan on wearing with them?

IDoAllMyOwnStunts Fri 20-Oct-17 22:55:52

I'm not sure about the top. I was envisaging a sparkly number (maybe silver) until someone upthread said top had to be plainish.
I'm really not edgy or cool. I have a feeling I might look like I'm trying to relive my youth 😀 Perhaps I need to bin the idea? confused
I'll need to have a lighter coloured top half and avoid black if I do go with it.
Perhaps I'll try some on this weekend and post pics if brave enough!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts Fri 20-Oct-17 23:03:45

This is the sort of shape I was envisaging. But the model is
A) 30 years younger than me
B) slick and cool and would look great in that hideous pink m&s dress.

I have black velvet topshop Jamie jeans I bought last year. I like them a lot, but didn't wear them very many times in the end cos I got too fat for them.

ImADingleDangleScarecrow Fri 20-Oct-17 23:10:07

I think they’re quite nice actually as they are more slim cut velvet trousers rather than leggings.

dantdmistedious Fri 20-Oct-17 23:11:36

Oh I don't care how current they are I couldn't too much of a reminder if my youth, and I'd look shit in them now.

abitoflight Fri 20-Oct-17 23:16:57

My short answer to you question is no they are not naff
However if u feel so unsure about them, I doubt you will wear them
The pic - I don’t personally like how they not leggingy around the ankle

ZaraW Sat 21-Oct-17 05:19:29

I wouldn't I wore them in the 90's too when I was at university with Doc Martens. I'm mid 40s now it's not a look I would revisit.

BinkyandBunty Sat 21-Oct-17 05:45:12

Would you consider leather leggings as an alternative to jeans?

Possibly a bit less witchey than velvet :D

Floisme Sat 21-Oct-17 08:54:15

I think in your shoes, I'd look for velvet skinnies instead. This isn't because of the 'not wearing it the second time around' thing which quite honestly I think is one of the silliest rules in fashion (and can only have been thought up by a teenager who thought they'd be dead at 50). In fact it's precisely because the velvet I've seen so far isn't like it was the last time around. It's the thin and shiny velour variety and, while I haven't seen any leggings, I imagine they would be absolutely pitiless. Velvet skinnies will give a bit more structure and I'm sure they'll be plenty around as Christmas approaches.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts Sat 21-Oct-17 09:35:31

Floisme - I'm thinking velvet skinnies is the way forward. Like you say, more structured and forgiving. But dressier than normal jeans. Hmmm. I'm liking that idea.

The more I think about it (with the help of you folk) black velour leggings could look awful.

Thank you all. Someone mentioned TopShop skinnie velvets upthread. I'll pay them a visit. If anyone knows any others that are worth a look I'd appreciate it. I'm a straight up and down shape if that helps.

IDoAllMyOwnStunts Sat 21-Oct-17 09:38:34

I think I'd feel too self conscious in leather. I'd feel like Adam Ant and keep being tempted to make that cross shape with my arms whilst singing 'Prince Charming' 😀

I love velvet leggings. I had some three or four years ago that sadly died a death (I also wore them in the ‘90s). I think they are gorgeous. I’m going to look for new ones actually. I like them with an oversized camel jumper. With flats for day or pointy heels and a sparkly necklace in the evening. Just avoid wearing with purple, chokers and DMs and you won’t look goth wink tbf it doesn’t sound like you would ever be in danger of that.

Floisme Sat 21-Oct-17 09:45:56

I owe one of my all time favourite fashion quotes to Adam Ant:
'Ridicule is nothing to be scared of'.

That said, I'm personally not a fan of leather leggings either - they're too shiny for me (a bit like velour would be).

I think I've seen some skinnies in a matte velvet in Pure Collection in John Lewis. They won't have been cheap (around £90?) but there's normally an online discount knocking around. I'm sure other shops will be putting them out soon.

Uniqlo have heattech velvet "leggings trousers", apparently machine washable - they come in a range of colours and seem comfortable and more versatile than thin leggings would be. I like them, but I love velvet anyway and I'm quite happy to relive 90s fashion, so I can't judge on their stylishness.

CountFosco Sat 21-Oct-17 13:19:00

Oh, I think velvet skinnies or straight legs could look good. The Pure ones are gorgeous colours and didn't Hush do some velvet biker jeans last year that were fab?

MayFayner Sat 21-Oct-17 13:59:16

I have a pair of Topshop Jamie jeans in black velvet, I got them about this time last year.

They're ok, but I feel a tiny bit frumpy in them. I think it's just the fabric though. They get a bit baggy and they aren't as stretchy as my denim Jamie jeans.
