Doc Marten wearers, come gather and talk to me...

I live in skinny black jeans.

Why then has it taken me 33 years of life to consider a pair of DMs? My kids have stashed out that DMs are cool and have pairs and they’re only in primary school.

Are they comfy? Are they TTS? What colour shall I get? I’m torn between:

Brown leather (sensible)

White patent (less sensible but would go with everything).

Grey patent (ditto).

Hot pink or purple.

Is it worth the investment?

I live in a family of dedicated Dr Marten wearers! I have navy blue 7 hole boots, my daughter has the same in a deep purple patent. My son and husband have the Chelsea boot style. I really would like a cherry red pair. I got mine for £40 in the doc shop in Northamptonshire but would happily have paid the full price. They are super comfy once they have been broken in. That takes a bit of time and patience. You should get some!

CathysGhost · 19/10/2017 23:05

I have hot pink. I'm 36 and a teacher. I love wearing them. Do it!

elQuintoConyo · 19/10/2017 23:06

I've been wearing my cherry reds since i was 16. I'm now 42 Grin

They go with EVERYTHING!

areyouanappliance · 19/10/2017 23:12

I have black ones, they have seen better days. I love them, so comfortable. And they carried me through Glastonbury rain and mud a few years back when I had a welly emergency! Deffo worth the price IMO

NikiBabe · 19/10/2017 23:13

Gosh I haven't had a pair since I was at uni. Off to look for some.
Are they waterproof?

starzig · 19/10/2017 23:22

I can't wear them. I am in agony in them (yes tried everything to break them in)

IdentityRequest1 · 19/10/2017 23:28

Love them, they take a bit of breaking in - the pascal style is a little softer though.
Colours... purple, cherry red or khaki.
Happy shopping!

theancientmarinader · 19/10/2017 23:29

I have blue. But I still miss my black ones with rainbow stitching from 1986. Dh calls them my mid-life crisis boots. I did point out that I have been wearing them for thirty years. Albeit not blue. They are the one thing that I get compliments on in the most random places. No one ever comments on my appearance. Ever. But a stream of strangers over the last few years have insisted on telling me how much they love my boots. Life is weird.

hoyhoy44 · 19/10/2017 23:32

dd has a cherry red pair which we got her for xmas when she was 13, now 19 and at uni they are still are staple for her and still in pretty good condition, she wears jeans most of the time so its either her docs, trainers or birkenstock/flip flops in summer

IamEarthymama · 19/10/2017 23:32

I love DMs!
I have 3 pairs of boots and 2 pairs of Mary Janes.
So comfortable and long lasting.

My favourite pair

Go for it, and show us the pictures 😊

Hobbes8 · 19/10/2017 23:37

My tan Henrietta brogues arrived today. I love them so much.
I have standard 8 hole boots in yellow, blue, grey, purple, snakeskin, baby pink and patent hot pink. I also have a mid-calf length pewter pair.

I'd recommend the snakeskin. You can get them in grey or off-white and they go with everything. Schuh is a good place to buy DMs in the sale. You can usually get discontinued colours new on eBay (where my beautiful henriettas came from!)

Theyre a bugger to break in. The first time you wear them they'll shred the backs of your ankles. Then wear them with plasters until they heal, by which time they should be broken in and the comfiest shoes ever.

Hobbes8 · 19/10/2017 23:41

I don't suppose you're a size 4?

I am....must resist....

Lumpylumperson · 19/10/2017 23:42

I’ve just gotten filed cherry red.

They’re the bad boys for me.

It’s my birthday a week or so before Christmas so I’m thinking they could be a joint present.

I know I’ll live in them.

Gotten filed? *googled.

NikiBabe · 19/10/2017 23:53

I am a size 4. It also means I can wear the youth range which is considerably cheaper than adult

lightcola · 19/10/2017 23:55

I wear nothing but DMs. Although never had a lace up pair. I use wear slip on ankle ones.

ferrier · 20/10/2017 00:02

I am so glad I found this thread. I have a pair of patent whites which I love and always get comments on but, as said above, they shred my ankles and also give me blisters on my little toes. Now I know to just persevere.

Nagus · 20/10/2017 04:42

I wear cherry red DM Chelsea boots with my skinnies. Have worn docs in some form or another since my early teens. So it's been a few years for me! Grin

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 20/10/2017 05:08

I live in DM's.

Take a while to break in but once they are very comfy then. I always wear them with thick socks.

My favourites are a Pewter patent pair I've had a few years and a printed pair I got last year, with George and the Dragon printed on them. They are great. I just treated myself to this years printed pair too; based on a William Blake painting.

I've got pale pink ones with a zip in as well but I don't recommend the ones with a zip as they are a bit baggy around the ankle.

Also have other pairs but not worn much.

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 20/10/2017 07:02

i have a few pairs of DMs and love each and every one of them. Take a bit to break in but once you do, they are supremely comfortable and will last for ages.

CJCreggsGoldfish · 20/10/2017 07:15

I had some cherry red ones last Christmas. I love them but I'm still to break them in. Has anyone got any tips, or do I just need to suck up shredded ankles for a while?

fancyKnickers · 20/10/2017 08:44

Another from a family of DM wearers. DH and DD live in theirs. I have a couple of pairs: patent black and cherry red - which I've seen you've gone for. Good choice. A couple of recommendations: thick socks for a few weeks to wear them in and invest in some Dr Marten's "cherry polish" - it looks v. pink but is really good for keeping the cherry colour shine.

If you wear pop socks under your socks it helps with the breaking in - protects your feet a bit.

NikiBabe · 20/10/2017 11:12

Does anyone wear the slip on boot ones? If so what are they like.

PNGirl · 20/10/2017 11:51

Love mine. Love love love. I really recommend Pascals in Virginia leather because they're much easier to break in than the traditional 1460s in the smooth, rigid leather.

I wear mine with skinnies with a t shirt and a leather jacket most days. I have black, antique Temperley, and cherry red Chelsea boots (which I don't wear much actually - not as keen on the shape).
