Background - we are in Northern Italy having a bit of a touring around holiday for DHs birthday - and between humid weather, none of my usual products and having just spent 3 hours on a windy ferry I looked like I had been dragged through the hedge backwards 3 times!

I saw beautiful shoes in the shop window and DH insisted we go in (I never would have myself) I saw her do it, not in a nasty way but it was clear she thought I was in the wrong place with my Rainmac and trainers 😁 We bought the shoes £££ and she couldn't have been nicer after that! Sorry - long and wittering but it's my 'pretty woman' moment.

We visited a Louis Vuitton shop in London years ago when we were having a cake tasting day nearby for a friends wedding. DS1 was little and came into LV with me. I paid for a purse I'd been longing for and just as I was leaving DS1 licked the entire length of the glass counter as everyone stood, frozen in time watching his snail-trail of slobber.

No Pretty Woman moments here. Just shame!

I went I need to a baby clothes boutique last week and took a hat to the sales assistant that my DD wanted.

She looked at me (jeans, t-shirt, no make up, unwashed hair) and said 'this is a bit expensive' in a not very nice way.

I just looked at her quizzically and said 'So?'.

DH is friends with a very rich but unassuming guy. He got The Look from a sales assistant when he went into a shop selling pianos. He went back later that day and bought a grand piano from the other sales assistant. In cash

DH's family used to be very wealthy and they still have bank accounts at a private bank.
Ages ago, as casually dressed twentysomethings, we once went into a very foodie (famous chef) restaurant for lunch and were told they were fully booked. We had a drink at the bar instead, which DH paid for with his card.
The barman scurried off and returned with a phalanx of staff who ushered us upstairs to the mostly empty dining room.

DH is legendarily scruffy. He buys great stuff but wears it to absolute death. We've had this so many times, still makes me smirk.

Not a shop but anyway! Changed some things as outing
V posh bar, friend rang before to check we were ok with dress code as we would be casually dressed (going there after an event). All fine
Got there, refused entry. Claimed to have no knowledge of the person my friend spoke to and were incredibly rude. My friend produced a card and profuse apologies all round, rope opened for us, ushered upstairs. Friend is chairman for local British institute of innkeepers - which covers that bar
Manager was mortified the staff didn't recognise the friend as they had a meeting there a few weeks before

Not in a shop but selling our house. Live in London. Up and coming area. Selling house. One ea gave much higher valuation. Went with them.
Got near asking price offer in 2 days.
Went house hunting.
Another ea when meeting him said ' oh you are the people selling that overpriced house on x road!'
Look on his face when I told him we had offer near said crazy price.
Same ea then went and sold similar house on same road few months later for even more. Feel like I should be due a cut of his commission as we raised the ceiling price on road quite a lot!!!

I find the decent expensive shops treat you well regardless. Years ago we were on a shopping trip in London and our son, who was about 4, was saucer eyed at the expensive jewellery stores. So my husband took him to the jewellery counter at Harrods and explained that he (our son) had never see a real diamond and would they show him one? They couldn't have been nicer and got out their biggest diamond ring for him. I've never forgotten it. We don't shop there and I doubt we ever will but whenever we visit, we have lunch in the foodhall.

I think Harrods are very good for customer service. They were a delight when my mother and I went in, looking absolutely like tourists who absolutely wouldn't be dropping a fortune!

I also like the staff in the Leeds branch of Harvey Nicks. I've only been in a few times but when they approach me, I explain I can't afford to buy anything but love looking at beautiful clothes and they're great. If they're not serving anyone else they'll chat and take the time to show me whatever's new.

Sorry - I know this is more about Pretty Woman stories but I just wanted to share these too!

I was in Harvey Nicks in London one Saturday. Girl dressed in quite scruffy jeans and sweater was dealt with appallingly by one of the staff when she asked about a skirt. I was at the counter waiting to pay and had already clocked her very expensive bag, watch and shoes (I'm like that). She gave the assistant a very long look, and then said something like "thanks for your lack of assistance, I won't bother taking these either then" and then dumped an armful of designer bits on the counter and walked off leaving assistant open- mouthed at lack of sale.

On the other hand the doorman at Louis Vuitton in Rome was gorgeous with a wonderful smile. I kept going in, coming out to have a look in the window (to check something obviously!) and then going back just to have him smile again. DH was standing across the road watching, and when I wandered over he just grinned broadly and said "trollop"! I know, I'm so sad but it was fun.......!
