Talk to me about your dentures please. I now have a denture 😥

The whole word just sounds horrible.
One of my front teeth, bottom incisor, start d to ' ting' a bit.
I went to dentist and had a filling. That was bad enough.
Then a year later a piece chipped off the top . It didn't hurt but in July I had it rebuilt.
For the last ten days I've been in agony and today I've had it removed and a false one put it.
It was painful and is excruciating.
The plastic bit at the bottom feels dreadful.
The tooth itself looks lovely.
I'm supposed to remove it and rinse it tomorrow. I darent go near he darn thing.
You wouldn't think it but I've looked after my teeth.
I'm told I have very strong roots.
I always have trouble with extractions.

It's going to be ok isn't it?

Ask about a Maryland bridge. You will need to wear the denture for a few months while you heal but hopefully it needn't be forever

I think the worst bit is this monstrosity at the base of my front teeth.
I spoke to a woman yesterday who said she'd had a palate for two upper teeth, one on either side of her mouth but couldn't get away with them so didn't bother.
I don't want to be that woman.
We go on holiday today. I've never felt so miserable ( and tired) at the start of a holiday.
It's not over yet, when I get back I'm back at the dentist for work on an inlay.
Then compared to what's happening in the world this isn't even a blip, so I'm giving my miserable face a slap and getting on with it.
Jeez! Some people like to moan for the sake of it 😂

Well I’m even worse than you. I have a false front tooth at the top!! An accident as a child... smashed in the face with a hockey stick. So three of my front teeth are dodgy. Then last year I walked into a lamppost. Sober...but hold down walking into the rain and wind. I was also in a terrible mood so I was walking like some possessed lunatic. It really hurt and most of the impact was on my mouth and one tooth in particular. My wonderful dentist tried to save it but it had to go. Now I have a plate with one tooth on it which looks great and right at the front. I’ve sort of got used to it and I’m just waiting for the implant. The whole thing was horrible but I have just had to get used to it. On the grand scheme of things it’s not a big issue and I have a few close friends going through life changing events which put my tooth into perspective.
I do look hilarious without it.. like some mad red neck.

I'll get over myself.
Just pain and tiredness are clouding my more normal optimistic self.
One thing I am proud of myself for, is not googling about teeth and dentures before going to the dentist. I was already in enough of a grip of fear without scaring myself further.

My teeth look great...so not all bad ..just feels bloody uncomfortable right now.
Ah well, better get the show on the road.

Aw, poor you. And you know, the fact that bad things are happening to other people, doesn't mean you can't feel crap about something that's happened to you. You're allowed to be upset. Rest and enjoy your holiday, take painkillers when you need them, and hope you feel a lot better soon.

Oh yes I didn’t mean to sound all pull yourself together sorry. It is rubbish and there at times it really gets to me. Especially as I’m sure this is just the start because of the other two teeth. Take the painkillers and I promise it gets better. Sorry it’s so awful.

Aww thank you cherries and papa too. I didn't take offence, I found your post very helpful.
My dh had to show me how to clean it , rinse it and apply glue.
I saw the hole for the first time and said I just feel like crying. I'm so darn tired. All my emotions get shook up like that. He said we'll cry then... so I did .... and felt a bit better.
It's grief isn't it.
I think I'll lose weight. It's so painful to eat. But I'm already starving and it's amazing how much pain you can put up with when you're that hungry.
Do you brush gently between meals or after eating anything when you've got a denture.

Dental surgery is horribly debilitating and I think really quite traumatic. my husband has the constitution of an ox but was badly shaken physically and emotionally after dental repair following an accident. He was very fragile for a few days and totally washed out. It WILL be ok, but be gentle with yourself till you get over the shock of it all. I'm not sure about aftercare, duh had an implant eventually but he did go through gallons of mouthwash.

He also lived on complain and liquidised soup for about 3 days.

I know how you feel. I have had really bad gum disease and lost my top front teeth about 6 years ago. Last year I had all my remaining teeth removed and now have full dentures. They look amazing but I feel that I need to hide away. People don't talk about dentures and they make me feel so old. It is better now and I have got used to the cleaning, sticky stuff, etc but I try not to look in the mirror when they're out and I always sleep in them. Before anyone suggests implants due to my gums and bone loss that isn't a possibility. Take care and be kind to yourself while you adjust

I have had a partial lower denture for several years. When I first had it I was so conscious of it in my mouth. It felt so invasive. But I stopped noticing it really quickly. However, what was worse was feeling such a wreck. Because nobody talks about having dentures you think nobody has them, but I bet more people have than you think. You have my sympathy, but it will pass

Do you know, I'm so glad I mentioned this.
I couldn't even bring myself to talk about it BEFORE the event, I was so traumatised.
I couldn't even google, I was so scared.
Dh has a top false tooth...I think that's really helped.
I know it's only early days yet but it feels so invasive, like a boulder in my mouth.
Perhaps you can give me an idea of the best fixative I can use.
I panicked on he plane. I was attempting to eat a bit of ham, cheese and pepper.
It had worked loose and I didn't know what to do.
I'm still bleeding a little. Just unpacking in apartment and went to mirror to take it out and here's flecks of dried blood on my lips
And I've just hugged a friend!
I keep plumbing even more depths of unpleasantness with it.

It's still very sore from the ten injections I had.

I have a denture. Im waiting on the final stages of my implant. It's been over a year with denture. Im kind of used to the physical sensation of it, but psychologically it's hard. I am really looking forward to having implant finished.

I had a denture for over a year - top front tooth.
I'm not going to lie. I hated it. I felt very self conscious and at first it didn''t fit properly so I couldn't eat and then it wouldn't stay in.
BUT, you do get used to it. People genuingely didn't notice/care. A couple of people would have definately told me if that wasn't the case. Also, my brother in law has two out of his top front 6 teeth on a denture and I didn't even know for years and we spend quite a bit of time together.

As for cleaning, I'd tend to run it under water after eating and then just give it a wipe with a toothbrush and put it in cleaning solution at night.
I didn't use a glue though so if you are, it might be different.

Because I didn't use glue I did have to be careful with some food - just like a fixadent ad! - so apples would be cut up and I would either cut or tear bread or not eat it at all etc.

I had a cracking denture - my two front teeth - for about 18 months following a kick in the face from a horse. I have implants now.
I'll never forget having the splintered remains of the teeth pulled. I felt like I was drowning in blood and spit and tears and snot. It was fucking horrific.
When the assault was over, the butcher dentist wiped my face, snapped my new Bugs Bunny denture in and handed me a fucking mirror.
I had two straight lines of tears and mascara running back to my hairline. The lower half of my face was swollen and bloody, my gums were purple and this vicious alien piece of plastic was thrust into the middle of it. I asked the nurse if she had any paracetamol... "Hvv yuh ehee pahathehamoh?" "No, she replied, crackling her crushed knuckles.
I paid an enormous sum of money and contemplated the hundred-mile drive home. Decided to walk down the (unfamiliar) town to find a pharmacy. Asked two middle-aged men loading kegs outside a pub. They offered to bring me! "Ah nho, thanhs, ifh you cah juh thell mi wheh ih is..." and as I walked away I could hear the exchange, "Did ya see the state of that poor wee girl?" "Someone's after hitting that poor wee girl!" so they obviously took me for a possibly drunk victim of domestic assault.

Oh brood mate I'm so sorry for laughing . That was just horrendous. I know what you mean though, the dental doctor who took out my tooth couldn't have been nicer and kinder.
I think he'd been well warned... very nervous patient, prone to tears, and shaking, likes to squeeze husbands fingers to the bone while having procedures done... handle with kid gloves! And lots of anaesthetic.
I've taken it out given it a good clean, dried it thoroughly and put enough fix o dent ( oh god can't believe I've written that word) to sink the titanic.
I've just had egg mayonnaise and tackling a huge Spanish tortilla washed down by a Spanish measure gin 😀

You might not need fixodent - I don't
I was very ill for several days after a particular extraction which I believe the result of all the adrenalin that had been coursing through my body.

I took some amusement/ comfort in googling the "passion gap" which is a very popular dental modification in the Cape Coloured community. I live in Cape Town now but have a full set of gnashers (though a few are screwed in). Many of my horsey friends are short a few (or a lot) of teeth also. Lots of jockeys don't bother getting any permanent fixing done until they retire, and usually ride races without their dentures in case they get broken.

If you've had an implant . Just how painful was that.
I won't saY I've bounced back but I've managed the 5 hour flight to Tenerife today a lot better than I thought I would. It probably helped having a late flight at 2-20 rather than an early morning one.
Flagging a bit now and earlier pain killer worn off but st least I got through a meal without it budging.
I'm not ready to try steak yet...the thought of that brings tears to my teeth 😮

I use fixodent ultra as I find the bit on the end of the tube thinner and therefore easier to dispense. Don't use too much as it gets messy. Better to reapply just before a meal - it really to stop movement whilst eating. I clean by soaking with a denture tablet while I'm in my morning shower. Eating is difficult at first but gets better quickly (first holiday I couldn't manage baguettes in France)and I can now eat anything. What I can't do is bite into apples or thick chocolate bars but they are easily cut up. People don't notice although you think they do - I went to give a talk to Hair and Beauty staff in a college and they wanted to know "what work I'd had done" as I looked much younger

Our taxi driver said I didn't even loook late 50s . I'm 65. That was nice of him. I wish I'd had chance to get my roots highlighted before we came away though.pain from the toothache just obliterated everything.

In fact when you're in so much pain, and not getting much sleep it's amazing how it interferes with your thought process.
Take my suitcase packing for eg..I've packed 16 dresses, 17 with the one I was wearing . They are more nighttime dresses . There's also 2 sundresses in there and I think I've left ten here.
15 pairs of pants. We are next door to a launderette and have an apartment with Washing facilities.
No wonder my suitcase weighed 23kg instead of 20kg. Just hadn't a clue what I was doing. As I had to keep lying down with the pain, especially Monday after I'd had it out. I think it resulted in panic packing.

I managed a good sleep last night without a pain killer, but am tempted today as it feels bruised from the injections.
Will see how it goes.

It's good to read your posts because I think dentures are going to be in my not too distant future.

I clench my teeth involuntarily and have already lost one on each side of my lower jaw. My dentist is so oversubscribed that I've been waiting 18 months for an appointment. Who knows what will happen by the next time I get in!
