I want to finally embrace my love of black...anyone else?

Ever since the age of 14 when I started having my own sense of style I've loved black. Cue 7 years of my Mum moaning that I wore nothing but black and it was so depressing (I did wear other colours). As I've got older I've heard lots of other comments (not often directed at me but still..) about how black is boring and ageing. All this has led to me wearing black with a vague idea that I shouldn't!
I'm 40 now, and still love black. It suits me (I'm a cool winter), and I feel good in it, and when I see others well dressed in black I'm very admiring. I now want to shake my feelings of shame and finally embrace my true love!

See, I've finally accepted that black does me no favours! I'm embracing life in navy and grey and have realised I look much better. I really do love black though- smart, versatile and looks so good with accessories.

I love all black ensembles. It may not suit me as much as other colours do but I love the way it makes me feel and that's good enough for me.

I do also love a bit of navy and grey queen. That's about my wardrobe covered!
I have a habit of dying anything I don't wear black and that usually gets it back in circulation!

I love black but grey does it for me too. Softer against pale skin, and sometimes with a more elegant edge I feel.

Not a fan of white, too dangerous for someone sloppy/dirty, too tricky regarding transparency etc and also there's just something too 'exposed' about it.

I had my colours done a couple of years ago and I'm a 'cool winter', too.
I discovered other colours that suit me better - dark navy, charcoal grey, berry reds, jewel tones - but I also came away feeling that black is a good colour for me. Which is good, because I love it

Its also SO easy for work. I have a large collection of black dresses and they're brilliant for when I just don't want to have to think about what to wear.

I have realised that I have to up the glam a bit when I wear black, though, or I look washed out now that I'm an old fucker. A big silver necklace and red lipstick sorts that out, though.

Cin3ma I'd love my colours done, can't really afford it but a self assessment led me to the same colours you have just described. I tend to wear the darker colours for work, and the brighter ones for special occasions.
splendid I looked lovely in white when I was younger (I was a warm winter then though I think), but now look like cheap and grubby in it. But ah yes, grey is my other love. I think it can be really sophisticated.

I love black, dark navy and charcoal grey.
I don't like looking pinkish and consumptive and like a newsreader with all the colours nonsense.
Cos and uniqlo and m and s all feed my black fine knit jumper, black skinnier plus black ankle boot uniform.
The only colour I wear is jewellery.

I've lived in navy for years but have just started wearing black again for evenings. In luxurious fabrics, and with contenporary gold jewellery, I feel polished and like the best version of me.

I belong here! All my clothes are black, with the odd charcoal thing to add a pop of colour.

I don't buy black handbags or plain jewellery, prefer to add colour (invariably green or turquoise) that way.

Suspect I'm also a cool winter. Extremely pale skin, very dark hair and greeny blue eyes.

Love this thread because ever since I hit 30 I've given myself a row every few months and have resolved to force myself to wear more colour! Because apparently black is so terribly unflattering. But I honestly feel gaudy and cheap in bright colours - it's just not me.

I pretty much live in black. Am closer to 50 than 40 and have v pale skin and dark hair. I think it suits me.

I started off thinking this wasn't a thread for me, but as the navy and charcoal wearers are sneaking in I think I'll settle back in.
I stick to "colour" in moderation- currently my colour is a lighter blue or silver!

There is a certain ‘stylist’ that I used to follow on Facebook and Instagram. Then I realised she had a habit of inferring that people wearing black are doing so because they wish to hide themselves, blend into the background or because they are insecure.

WRONG.

Black can be really classy. Done well, it is very flattering. As long as you avoid the ‘multiple shades of black’ thing (you know - where it’s been washed so much it’s faded to a blue grey) in one outfit then who cares?

Black is a great base for amazing accessories. Black skinnies are my staple.

I’ve never had my colours done but pretty sure I fall into the cool winter category. I do not own a single pink or yellow or otherwise ‘bright’ thing. It looks garish and cheap on me. I’m happy with my blacks, navys, greys, and prints to brighten things. I don’t feel the need to shoehorn my style into a certain colour spectrum.

Another monochrome fan here, always have been. Sometimes I may try other colours - then see the same thing in black and think how much nicer & more stylish it looks in black.

Oh yes, love wearing black. Also been told I should wear other colours. I suspect this is by others who just wish they had the guts to wear more black

I'm 50 and have always worn black
I did dabble with navy when I hit 30 in a wish to be more grown up
But it didn't last long
I like jewel colours and hate pastels and white
I don't like patterns or flowery prints thought I do like stripes

People always tell me that I suit black. I am cool skinned, blonde hair. I always make sure I have a bit of gradual tan on. I always feel polished and groomed when I am wearing black.

Deep Winter black fan here. At age 45 it does slightly aging next to my face.. so I often go charcoal or another deep winter colour there...nothing else needs to change though.

Another winter who loves black with a dh and dm who have at times told me I wear too much of it but it really does suit me (v light blonde, blue eyed, neutral skin). I also love hot pink, charcoal and dark navy .... with metallics to make it interesting.

I love black on other people, I think it can look amazing and cool. On people who it doesn’t suit it looks crap, and I do find it dull in that ‘black trousers and a nondescript top’ sense for work outfits, but I wish people wouldn’d unilaterally worship or despise it.

On me I love charcoal, navy, dark olive etc, just not black. Often add a splash of colour with a scarf or handbag.

Can someone point me to a really good self assessment tool or site please? I definitely can't afford to pay to get my colours done. But I would really like to get my act together WRT my wardrobe, & do the capsule thing so I need to figure out my best colours.
