M&S Oh dear

Quick visit to a fairly rural m&s today in Scotland. Racks of the dreaded pink dress for £10 in every size . Sale made quite depressing viewing.

M&S Oh dear

shinynewusername · 27/07/2017 00:13

I haven't seen a single person actually wearing it thankfully.

SukiTheDog · 27/07/2017 09:59

WHY are they consistently, year on year, getting clothing so spectacularly wrong?

(The food's so good and the staff excellent)

TheLegendOfBeans · 27/07/2017 10:03

It sucks. Their losses on clothing are meaning they have to close down all overseas stores to remain solvent depriving me of my rocky road bites and king prawn makhanis as of the 31 October.

Bluntness100 · 27/07/2017 10:05

That was always going to happen. I wonder if they will even sell for a tenner.

Chottie · 27/07/2017 10:05

The pink dress was on sale in Bluewater M&S a couple of weeks ago too.

SukiTheDog · 27/07/2017 10:23

Having said that....got 12 pairs of new lacy knickers in the 3 for 2 last week. Always excellent, their undies.

nina2b · 27/07/2017 11:34

Only their black opaque tights - 40 denier - are reliable these days. The food is still ok. Other than those things - hopeless.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2017 17:14

I honestly don't understand how they get it so very, very wrong so often.

Having said that, I bought a pair of wide legged cotton crops in the sale there, that I'm currently really loving wearing.

iveburntthetoast · 27/07/2017 17:17

I've found that even their food has gone downhill recently. I bought one of their meals that I've always liked, but it seems to have been changed. I'd bought two of them and they both ended up in the bin.

iveburntthetoast · 27/07/2017 17:18

Sorry that post doesn't make sense! I bought two packs of one of their meals and they were disgusting

Tessticklesyourfancy · 27/07/2017 17:27

I've got £60 of m&s vouchers sat in my purse, they've been there for months and I can't see me spending them on anything but food now Hmm

tobee · 27/07/2017 19:34

Deliberate self sabotage? Just got a knicker order through the post mind.

whiteroseredrose · 27/07/2017 19:37

Has anyone looked round topshop recently?

Went in on Sunday with DD. Dear God! Come back M&S all is forgiven!

Lucked · 27/07/2017 19:49

I was In a store last week, I felt I had stepped back in time with lots of cheap prints and unstylish clothes. It was like Anne diamonds wardrobe from her hay day.

But Topshop is aimed at rich eighteen year olds. They can do what they like.
M&S should be classic easy to wear. That you can pick bits from if you're 16 or 80.
So skirts and dresses should be a reasonable length (or available in a couple lengths)
Trousers should be in at least 3 lengths.
Good quality knit wear in different shades each season, but always in Black, grey, navy, cream, brown, camel.

lurkingfromhome · 28/07/2017 08:31

Agree that even their food is fairly hit and miss these days. I've bought a fair few things that are the food equivalent of Per Una (ie would be acceptable if they hadn't randomly added that completely inappropriate ingredient).

AndromedaPerseus · 28/07/2017 08:46

I still buy the M&S classics that I've always bought: pants, bras, Tights, Trousers, cardigans, school uniform but not the 'high fashion' stuff they do now. When I was a teenager many moons ago I remember they did a slightly more out their range of clothing which was limited to big stores in London and Manchester and I got a few nice pieces from there.

kneesupfatty · 28/07/2017 08:47

The problem is that M&S do usually have a couple of gems on their website - but it takes real perseverance to find them! I bought this denim dress online the other day and it's fab, but I don't even bother looking in my local store anymore.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2017 10:05

I'm not really interested in their food. I only go in to look at the £10 meal deal, or to buy flowers. I sometimes buy their bread and butter pudding. They stopped doing the lovely leek and Gruyere tarts I used to buy loads of. :(

SlothMama · 28/07/2017 10:12

I do buy some of my work wear from there, I've found some really nice smart dresses that weren't too expensive.
I mainly go for their food though and reduced flowers! It's a shame as my local M&S is huge but their clothes are just aren't nice. The home ware is gorgeous but too expensive

TSSDNCOP · 28/07/2017 10:47

When they get it right they nail it. Love that denim dress, and I bought some striped wide legged trousers and a navy p,elated Cami top from autograph recently that are fabulous. But the level of wrongness is startling.

They need to start with selling a plain round necked, short sleeve, waist length cotton t-shirt in White, bright red (not tomato), navy (not indigo) and black. This they used to do well, and then when they cocked this simple task up much worse followed.

They used to sell epic Italian suits in Autograph with a jacket, trousers and dress option. Simple shirts, blouses or Camis to wear underneath. I had loads. Why did they stop?

You used to be able to buy shirts which didn't have naff tabs sewn halfway up the fucking sleeve to keep them rolled up. When did anyone not be able to roll up a sleeve?

Limited used to be really excellent and now looks nylon, lairy and just stupid.

So if I was in charge of Marks I'd get a panel of women that actually shopped there in 1995-2000 era and get them to help with what the fucks gone wrong, not vapid Alexa Chung going through the archives, not bloody Twiggy.

Otherwise swap into womenswear whoever is in charge of menswear. Their range is much, much better and the models look like they don't mind wearing the gear. Every man I know is re-newing their dinner jackets at M&S and chaps that only buy a suit infrequently are picking up stunners for £99.

However, if you wanted to go to a fancy dress as Margot from The Good Life ....

Oldraver · 28/07/2017 11:56

Do you think they had so many internet hits on that dress that they misinterpreted it and had masses made...not realising it was being mocked ?.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2017 14:02

Yes to everything TSS has said.

Their jeans are still pretty good. Just bought two pairs. A pity the black ones fade as soon as you look at them though.
