Shoulder length hair that's neither straight nor curly - wtf can I do with it...

That doesn't involve straightening it every day?
It's curly-ish at the front, graduating to merely wavy round the back.
It doesn't help that I can't grow it longer without it turning into rats tails Angry
However I can go to sleep with straight hair and get up in the morning and look like I've been electrocuted.
It's currently light blonde but I'm planning on darkening it down a bit this week, but what can I do to make it look ok this summer? I'm thinking I need to embrace the wave at least? - but how??

I am not help but I'm following this thread because I have the exact same hair but a different colour. Does yours also frizz at the first hint of moisture in the air or sweat?

Caulkheadupnorf · 28/06/2017 20:01

My hair is like that. I often do it in French plaits at night so it is wavy in the morning. I can't get the same wave from using mousse but I think that's because it's too thick

DrSpin · 28/06/2017 20:04

No answers but similar problems. My hair is sreaights st the front ad curly at the back / underneath. Mine also won't grow nicely. I've tried curling creams and mouse but not working for me.

Ktown · 28/06/2017 20:06

Google French- girl hair. It sounds like what you have and lots of people are keen on it. Or beach hair.
Salt spray? I think it looks chic.

SpaghettiAndMeatballs · 28/06/2017 20:16

I have baby-fine hair that's neither curly nor straight. I found that mousse makes a huge positive difference when I have to look smart, and that when I didn't a short style worked best (so about 3-5 inches long I guess, shaped though). Very short requires too much work, very long just looks awful and flat and stringy.

While I don't need to care, I chop it by hand to shoulder length, and a bit shorter on top for layering myself, and keep it in a pony tail the vast majority of the time.

PacificDogwod · 28/06/2017 20:18

I have hair like that.
I currently rock a very curly quiff with very short back and sides.
Really rather New Romantic Grin

I love it - much better than my previous long hair and only requires air drying and a bit of gunk scrunched in to avoid the dragged-through-a-hedge-backwards look.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 28/06/2017 20:18

Sounds like my hair. I tend to straighten it, but when I don't have time or want to give it a rest I've just discovered mousse. I run it through, then scrunch up my hair while blow drying it upside down. It seems to bring out the waves and makes it sort of big. It only works of its not been washed that day though, otherwise it's too flyaway. Hope that made sense!

ohgoshIdontknow · 28/06/2017 20:19

Get a Brazilian blow dry.

Changed my life. Worth every penny.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 28/06/2017 20:21

Ooh, Pacific do you have a picture, or one of something similar from online? It sounds lovely, I'm always up for trying new things with mine!

WeeM · 28/06/2017 20:22

Use some surf spray/curl spray and diffuse it dry. but stop drying before it's completely dry then finish with some hairspray. It saves me so much time!

PacificDogwod · 28/06/2017 20:44

Pardon the crappy photo.
Also have no colour in it because I wanted to see what I've got (which is fading brown with grey bits... Hmm)

Thank you! That looks very funky, I really like it. I'm not sure mine would do that as it's much less curly than yours, but might have a think about similar things...

SheGotOffThePlane · 28/06/2017 21:04

Hairq yes! I washed and blow dried my hair beautifully this morning. Living in Scotland it's more often than not damp, and my hair turns into Crystal Tips.

I would love a fringe but sadly I've learnt my lesson on that front.

Pacific that's lovely but I'm too feart to cut it short...its so hard to grow even now lol.

Ooh, I'm in Scotland too and after 10+ years of straightening my hair I cannot tell you how liberating it has been to have it short AND curly - good grief, that really makes it sound like pubes! Blush

I walk to work and welcome every drizzle as it actually makes it look better Grin

SheGotOffThePlane · 28/06/2017 23:31

Ooh are you coming to the Scottish meet up Pacific?

I have similar hair and this is now my routine for biblically acceptable hair so I don't look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards.

  • wash & condition in Body shop rain forest shampoo
  • pat dry until hair is 50% dry
  • comb through L'Oreal Creme de Mousse with a squirt of John Freida Frizz eaze
  • tie into a top knot, blast through with a hairdryer & leave until cool or overnight
  • undo top not, tip head upside down to shake curls loose

DisorderedAllsorts · 29/06/2017 01:54

Publicly acceptable offs not Biblically!

TitaniasCloset · 29/06/2017 02:48

I have an aurora band ( a sleep in curly thing) that makes a difference to me, I use it a couple times a week. They have them on amazon.

Otherwise you could tong it when you wash it.

I'm looking into salt sprays because they are supposed to encourage a natural curl

Bue · 29/06/2017 04:29

You should research the curly girl method, wavy is a form of curly and with the proper care and cut you will be able to coax it into a much curlier and manageable style!

Groupie123 · 29/06/2017 05:33

I have the same type of hair - only thing that worked for me was growing it, as it gave it weight. The rat tail look eventually resolved itself lol

GinGeum · 29/06/2017 05:43

My hair is the same. It's taken years to learn how to bloody manage it. Now, I wash it twice a week, and blow dry it with a cheaper version of the Babyliss Big Hair. Then, overnight I put it up into a ponytail right on top of my head, and let it down in the morning. Never brush it.

If I can't be bothered to blow dry, I'll put it into French plait bunches overnight, but again, no brushing in the morning!

I've got a babyliss big hair, and it's great for a night out or whatever, but too much faff for every day.
I might need to just try and get past the rats tails and let it grow, it's easier said than done though, and I just got it chopped into a bob at the beginning of last month.

I used to live in a hot country where it dried mega fast when left on its own, it was so much easier to curl there. It takes so long here that the roots just settle into being flat and lank. It doesn't help that I like my hair big and bouncy whether it's straight or wavy Sad

hellswelshy · 29/06/2017 12:21

Mine is similar but very thick too. I've recently had it cut a bit shorter into a subtle graduated bob, and I tuck one side behind my ears which seems to help balance it. I blow dry upside down for volume and scrunch a bit. Mainly then hope for the best but do use straightness to just smooth and curl the front part so it doesn't look frizzy - if that makes sense. I don't use the straightness to straighten iyswim but rather curl parts of my hair to look more natural. Mind you, I am not a fan of the polished look so happy for hair to look a bit carefree Grin

keratin treatment helped for me
