Well Celine is a name, so like Celine Dion.

And Harpers bazaar say it's mahj

Celine (se-leen) like Celine Dion.

No idea about Maje? (Mar-jee perhaps?)

may-ya

Madamfrog Thu 22-Jun-17 08:49:33

Céline: saylean, with the emphasis on the lean
Maje: mazh (like mash but with zh, the same sound as the s in pleasure, instead of sh at the end)

sparechange Thu 22-Jun-17 08:54:32

Sul-leen
Mar-jee (that's how the assistants in the shop pronounce it as well!)

badabing36 Thu 22-Jun-17 09:01:12

Celine like Dion.

Madge like neighbours.

No consensus really smile o though it was se-leen but my husband said chellini as for maje I thought ma-jay but sounds like I was wrong, just got dress and shoes from the above and was terrified of anyone asking me where they were from grin

sparechange Thu 22-Jun-17 14:31:40

cece
If you phone the Maje shop on Kings Road, they answer it 'Hello, Mar-jee Kings Road' which is proof enough for me!

n0ne Thu 22-Jun-17 15:13:00

Celine like Celine Dion, Maje like Maia? Altogether I live in a country where j is pronounced y so that's colouring my thinking

Madamfrog Thu 22-Jun-17 19:38:13

Sparechange, are the people who answer the telephone French? Because here in France we say as I said above... and they are French brands ;-)

Lanaorana2 Thu 22-Jun-17 20:31:24

Seleen as in Dion, Marje as in Marjorie Dawes.

Don't get me started on the Balenciaga designer - Dee-meh Vass-ay-lee-arr if you must know.

Ktown Thu 22-Jun-17 20:32:48

Selleen

May-a

LeannePerrins Thu 22-Jun-17 20:41:56

Whole pronunciation guide here from Harpers.

They say it's Mahj, which I would agree with.

It's definitely seh-leen. 'Chellini' would be Italian, and Céline is French.

I pronounced Balenciaga as 'bal-en-cha-ga' for an embarrassingly long time, thinking it was Italian. It isn't.

Ktown Thu 22-Jun-17 20:44:32

I meant to write
My- a

aniceearlynight Thu 22-Jun-17 23:02:58

Seleen and Marje

Madamfrog Fri 23-Jun-17 17:05:16

Not 'Mahj' because then it would be written 'Mâje' instead of 'Maje' ;-)

This is in French but the presenter pronounces 'maje' at 12 seconds in.

She says 'mahj'. Shorter 'a' sound then 'marj'. the 'j' sound is like the 's' in 'treasure'.
