Swim shorts?

Can anyone help me find some swim shorts? I go through this every year and it's really getting me down!

All the swimwear in shops have the bottoms which are like pants (even the ones which claim to be shorts are tiny), and I just can't bear to wear them.

I need something I can wear with a tankini top at the pool and on my holiday. Preferably a nice colour, proper close-fitting swimwear (so not board shorts) and come a good 3 inches or so down my inner thigh.

I've looked at a few online but most have bad reviews or are too expensive (I'd rather not spend more than £20).

Sorry I probably sound like a complete pain.

Would some cycling shorts work?

I went to a lake a couple of summers ago and all the teenagers were wearing men's silky boxers. It looked so practical, but I am not sure if they actually went swimming.

I did get some swimming shorts in the sports section of a department store, but they were uncomfortable to swim in as they flapped about a bit, but a sports shop might be worth a look?

Sports direct ?

Thumbcat · 18/06/2017 13:15

I bought some recently in Decathlon - they call them board shorts but they've been fine for swimming in. I'm really pleased with them.

Thumbcat · 18/06/2017 13:16

Ah, just read OP properly and you don't want board shorts. I'd still check out Decathlon though as they had a good range of swim wear.

I know you said no board shorts, but Sports direct also do really short, quite fitted women's board shorts (if you size down) in a nice range of prints which don't impede proper swimming like the baggier styles. I assume that's why you didn't want board shorts? Unless you are in France and not allowed? I wear mine with my tankini top for both proper swimming and messing about with the kids without worrying about losing bikini bottoms on the slides!

GlitterGlue · 18/06/2017 13:45

I gave up and bought men's fitted swim shorts. They're plain black so I just wear them with a nicer top.

Gingefringe · 18/06/2017 13:48

I have a pair of of these Boden shorts and they're great. There's only a few sizes left though.

witchmountain · 18/06/2017 14:39

Decathlon have some tight ones (i.e. not like normal boardshorts) and something they call a tankini swimsuit which has shorts.

Depending on what counts as a nice colour, if you google UV swim shorts you will get some longer ones - maybe longer than you want - mainly in navy or black, with the odd brighter colour thrown in.

Other than that, if you don't mind an all in one then google legsuits/kneesuits/swim skins - bit utilitarian looking though and more expensive.

I have these and they are great. Bit expensive but very comfortable and don't ride up.

PoopyPanda · 20/06/2017 11:51

Thanks everyone - I'll check those out. There's also a Speedo shop quite near me that I can look in.

No, not in France nor do I do 'proper' swimming - I just can't bear for my bikini line/tops of my legs to be on show in public and need something to lounge around the pool in!

I've just bought a panache swim skirt, as the top of my thighs are my worst body part by considerable margin.

PoopyPanda · 20/06/2017 16:59

The swim skirts I've seen have pants underneath, they'll flip up in the breeze!

Mine has pants fitted, but it is fitted rather than floaty. On me it is more flattering than shorts. (size 14, hourglass)

Pavonia · 20/06/2017 18:12

M&S have some shorts that match their tankini tops, they don't go down the leg but they are more substantial than most bikini bottoms.

Would these be long enough? I"m looking for the same thing - I tend to wear a rash vest + swim shorts in the sea at this time of year, and it looks a bit silly wearing a super-skimpy bottom half with substantial black thermal rash vest. Sadly my nice cerise adidas shorts have gone all saggy & definitely won't stand up to many more outings.

hugoagogo · 20/06/2017 18:39

Or these?

Germgirl · 20/06/2017 18:42

I bought these in Decathlon. They're great. Just what you're looking for I think.

Germgirl · 20/06/2017 18:42

Ha! Cross post! The Reva ones are great.

AuntieStella · 20/06/2017 18:47

I was just going to link exactly the ones that -Germgirl did.

It might also be worth googling for triathlon shorts (can be expensive though, but will be practical)

Thank you, everyone. The Reva ones look fab but aren't recommended for regular use in chlorinated water, so I've just this minute ordered these instead: www.decathlon.co.uk/anna-swimsuit-bottoms-black-id_8371491.html

fingers crossed
